This afternoons work, cam now dialled in correctly, bottom end can be completed tomorrow. Just need to port match the heads/inlet and collect my headers on Monday and it can all go back in the car - hurray!

Tonight I picked up my headers (at long last!!!!) Flame sprayed in zinc with a light polish/brushing. not quite the finish I had in mind but we will see how they look once they have been cooked when the engine has run. At least they are totally rustproofed/sealed now. Also my new mini 60a alternator turned up today, I'll need to make up new mounts for it.......... as it replaces this one which will be up for sale soon as a kit. It a std GM alty with all new internals at the back and converted to single wire output (to battery). Comes with low mount kit that bolts directly to block. Not sure on output but I think it's 65Amp - might be 80A but definitely 65Amp or higher. Had a bit of a play with the inlet and heads, luckily they need very little porting to match them up, inlet is done & one head has been done, hopefully get the other done tomorrow evening. Will then strip & rebuild the heads to clean them & re-lube everything and then it can all be re-assembled. Hoping to get the motor & trans back in over next weekend.

Black is the new red Black actually makes the engine run cooler as it radiates heat better. I did it black cos I like the colour though RedPopRacing isn't as good as BlackPopRacing, black wins! Engine looks lovely, do you expect the headers to change colour much?

^^^lol^^^^ No idea on the headers, I was told they would polish up like dull chrome, but they look like they have been painted with aluminium paint I expect they will darken down at the cylinder head area. Hopefully they will look better on the car otherwise they might end up being painted VHT black.

You might be lucky in that they'll polish up, if that's the look you're going for? I do like shiny headers, even better if they're nicely heat discoloured at the top end, shows the cars been driven

Did not really want them that shiny, but was promised 'dull stainless' finish. I'll see how they look on the car & might take them back for more polishing if I don't like them.

Hmmm......some mixed news tonight.
Stripped one of the heads, but the valve collets seem to have hammered the valve stems on the upper landing edge. Further investigation shows the collets have been bottoming out on the valve guide tops. Now the engine has only been run for about 30 mins to break the cam in since the original rebuild.
The valve springs don't appear to have been binding though and they were originally set up properly at a trusted race shop with proper shimming under the springs to get equal poundages. New bronze lined guides were fitted at the time of all the head work too. I'm hoping the fault lies in that the engine had a big block Chevy oil pump fitted when it was run up before which had far too high oil pressure - 100psi at idle cold and 60psi idle hot which would (I think) have been pumping up the lifters too high?
I've carefully dressed about 1mm off the top of all of the guide stems to allow a little more clearance and to polish the tops smooth again, and I had to carefully file the burrs off the guide stems to remove them from the heads.
Any thoughts on the issue?? Is the excessive oil pressure to blame?

Lifters have a set length when they are full of oil so, whilst that pressure is high, it won't cause the problem as the circlip thing at the top of the lifter limits the cup/piston travel. Sounds to me like the new guides are sticking up too high. Either that or you have more lift than you think, are you running roller rockers with a different ratio? Are the pushrods the right length?

I have new pushrods - old ones were not moly so no good for the guide plates. Cam is a Comp cams 270H so only a medium lift - checked on dial guage and it all matches the cam card.
How do I work out the lifter length without it pumped up? I will set it up on the block with the pushrod in and check the clearances if I know that height. Or can I use the std lifter without the valve springs fitted & check that way?

Ive no experience with hydro lifters, but in the VW world you can buy an adustable push rod (just one), fit it, adjust it then measure it and cut the other rods to that length.
Are the collets def the right ones for the valves? If the ridges on the collet were too thin then the collet could fret up and down.

Collets are correct yes. Seems its pretty normal to have to mill off some of the valve guides on higher lift cams. I got a new set of moly pushrods, bet I ordered the wrong length now.......... A friend is going to machine up a solid lifter to check it with, but I will also do the math on the cam lift & relative valve travel distance, it should be 0.100 longer at the valve stem than advertised lift. Don't look like the engine will be going back in this weekend now
