there are pros and cons to balance shafts. They help reduce inherant vibrations in four cylinder engines, and just promote smoothness throughout the rev range. Downside is they can consume up to 10hp to rotate as combined they weigh about 3kgs.
You can remove the balance shafts, the one driven by the belt can simply be removed and the bearings turned 90deg in their journals to block up the oil galleries, while the other one driven off the oil pump can either have the weights machined off it, or you can cut off the shaft and just leave the oil pump stub.
My 4G37 had the belt removed from the balance shaft as we believe it was seized, while the one driven off the oil pump was still turning - and I can't say I noticed any extra vibrations from normal.

Is the Hyundai -> Mitsubishi relationship like the Daihatsu -> Toyota one?? Lots of parts interchangability, platform engineering etc. ?

"Sweet looking truck you have there. I'm always amazed at what people own on this site, and yours looks immaculate. Guess livin where you do, rust isn't too much of an issue??"
Rust is not an issue around here but this truck has acquire some rust that I had to take care in the past, mainly in the rear gate.
"Those wheels are peugeot 206 alloys arn't they? Or if not there copies at least. Suit the truck superbly!!"
Yes, those wheels are the factory ones from a Peugeot 206 GTi, the bolt pattern is the only one I could get for my truck. They don't sell 4X108 wheels around here, most vehicles are 4X100 or 4X114.

Thanks for the compliments on the truck, I see you are located in the States, right?
"Is the Hyundai -> Mitsubishi relationship like the Daihatsu -> Toyota one?? Lots of parts interchangability, platform engineering etc."
Yes it is, but I am not sure what parts can be exchanged and from what vehicle...Mitsubishi had some shares of Hyundai in the past...there were also some England made Fords that share some stuff...
Fuel...quite an engine lesson!!! I have always wanted to get more power from that engine but it seems around here no repair shops are familiarized with the engine balance thing and they are always affraid of taking the time to go deeply and see what can be done...

They rarely come up for sale, not too expensive, between £100 and £500 I guess, all the ones I have seen advertised were red, 1200cc. In South Africa , we like pickup truck, but this was never for sale there.

Hyundai at the time had used old Ford designs for their chassis, ie the Stellar was based on the Cortina. They also used Mitsubishi engines at the time, and then later on went on to licence the Mitsubishi engine designs with their engines (G4CN, etc).
I guess it is like Daihatsu is to Toyota. In the states Mitsubishi sold the first gen Hyundai Excel as the Mitsubishi Precis.

I remember people talked very bad about that first generation Excel. They said they were disposable, in my country people beat the hell out of them, they are even used as taxis.

Lovely little truck you have their. I've recently just got hold of a 1 owner from new 56000miler local to me. Which I plan to do a few things too. I've been offered a 1988 1500 lancer but not sure of its the correct engine to swap over???

I haven't seen one of these since the 1980s. I actually considered buying one new.
