So it's probably about time I confessed to a new problem.. Wrecker friend who I had escaped to help parents with other projects/problems said he needed some help for a few weeks while his wife was away to Vietnam; he was supposed to be going too but found he was unable to go at the at the last minute. So I was there & said how sad it was to see that a fairly nice '95 JDM H22 vtec Prelude he'd bought to 'keep' was now in his yard with a Civic stacked upon its roof, & he'd also scrapped a CRX that needed drivers door & frt guard. Coincidentally He'd also been offered a 'nice' local Prelude by an old friend left sitting for many months after she'd got a new Suzuki, & thought it was an auto, but didn't really have room to keep it. So suddenly I'm offered the pair, & couldn't refuse with an obvious weakness for under-appreciated beauties in mortal distress... Not sure what is happening about this one yet since it's still buried in his wrecking yard & not looking like it'll be released anytime soon! So I'm not holding my breath. Aust delivery 1992 Prelude Si (2.3l DOHC {H23} 4WS) now delivered to my drive, 5-speed man, fair condition & seems to run ok but 'little' dent in the back bumper was a massive understatement. Suspiciously repainted in original dark grey. Honda didn't bother fitting rear bumper beams under the covers for our market so Bootlid, rear panel & end of boot floor are mess, though at least rear 1/4s & rails look good. A few weeks later a 'local' self serve wrecker was having a $50 'All you can carry' charity morning... so I spent a few hrs. hacking this off with hack-saw, hammer & chisel. Bumper's a mess & wouldn't want to have to look through rear spoiler all the time.. but certainly not complaining for $50! Also got a facelift dash cluster & H22 vtec ECU in case I want to upgrade eventually. ( H22vtec= 190hp, H23=160hp) I've always admired their style even if I don't think I could justify or cope with their decadent coupe impracticality as a regular car...

Picture of crushed boot floor, must get another to show how badly the rear edge has been pushed in. 4WS ECU behind rear seats is a monster, compromising boot/cabin access, the electronic system more complicated & less reliable than the previous Preludes completely mechanical system so they could reduce steering weight/assistance & vary rear steer according to speed. European 5th gen 4WS ECU might be an upgrade to cut weight & bulk? Not that I'm likely to come across one here where 5th-gen Preludes never offered it. Would be tempting to abandon the 4wsteer just for the weight compromises, given they approach 1300kg with 30-40kg? of 4ws, but a shame to loose such a standout feature. And fantasizing about Colourful rare Japanese interior for added flair over the dull black I have. {seat full forward} Admittedly the interior was definitely an example of style over practicality with foolishly located window & mirror switches, door speakers blocking foot access, & long centre console sweeping back handsomely between the rear seats so there is nowhere for rear passengers to put their knees behind the front seats in the cars 'short' 2550 wheelbase, cut down 17cm from the Accord(2720)until it was 30mm shorter than the Civic & Integra despite a longer bonnet/engine bay to accommodate rearward raked engine. Rear headroom is probably slightly better than Integra, while 75mm wider body adds drama with broad shoulders & bulging rear haunches. The Grey-black paint is just horrible isn't it !? Though I think a solid red like my replacement parts would be much easier than metallic. Keeping my eyes open for some 5th gen glass sunroof, 5-stud wheels & hubs to change from the 4x114.3 these have (unlike all my other cars).

Some better pictures to display the state of the Prelude's rear panel after I welded up the 7 spoiler holes and fitted my replacement bootlid. {boot obviously not shut} Bumper bounced back to roughly its correct shape. Boot sealing lip pushed in a full 100mm, floor to a lesser extent & rear rails still look to have held up well despite the impact. So glad to have a replacement rear panel rather than trying to straighten that! I saw some dark navy blue corduroy upholstery cloth in a 2nd hand shop and was able to resist until I see something better or brighter!? And visiting a cheap self-serve wreckers having a sale looking for a Civic D16 Vtec ECU I instead came home with a 5th gen Prelude glass sunroof & a pair of 5-stud frt hubs for $30 each. I already have a set of Honda S2000 wheels eagerly bought for a crazy $50 a few years ago.. but I'm worried 16x8.5" rear wheels might not be legal, so might have to keep my eyes open for slightly narrower interesting/cheap options.

For more productive news I finally got around to taking the SiR to a panel repairers to get its front fixed under insurance after mothers little accidents to the bonnet, bumper & left guard last year. Bumper needing specialist attention since she had pulled the side forward tearing its mountings, the lower edge & grille slats. Folding it down the middle of the car. So thankfully the repairers were able to save it with only a little distortion remaining beside the number plate. My brother is still complaining that they painted it according to Honda's paint code leaving it a slightly lighter shade than others previous efforts... though since they also did the 20cm strip of its roof I don't think I'll be complaining if I can get some help repairing jacking damage to the passenger floor later. Might get them to brush some paint on the edge of mirror housing though. Front indicator lenses were also slightly cracked & with good replacements unobtainium I bought some $200 clear lenses from Ebay...Peru! Unfortunately they are obviously handmade Vac-formed efforts so while I can appreciate the effort that has gone into making them the optics are a little uneven & they were unable to form the undercuts Honda/Stanley molded into the original ends to close up the gaps to the bumper. The original lenses were also glued or friction welded to their reflectors deterring me from cutting them free so I'm considering making something custom up with LED lighting to go behind these lenses.

While getting the CR-X front fixed I also went to visit a friend who had started his own car restoration, repair & maintenance shop a few years ago, He'd actually offered me some work there a few years ago but I was busy stuck with other problems & being 85km or at least 1 3/4 hrs drive from me was a sticking point.. He repeated his offer & this time I went for it, working there a few days a week now that another friend was renting a place (relatively) nearby where I could stay. Admittedly not doing anything too significant at the moment, mostly helping out with assembly/disassembly, sanding & paint preparation etc. But great to see & be a part of some major restoration projects with the $ required for parts & labour to get them done on a reasonable time scale. Another old workmate was also working there & though distracted by the sudden & recent death of his father, he suggested I should be collecting his old Honda Civic he had stopped using a few years ago when it's clutch started slipping. With the Blue Integra disaster I'd suggested I had the mechanical bits to give it an upgrade... & I admit I'd been buying various other bits with it in mind for quite a while now.. So finally I managed to go and see it. Unused for more than 3 years now & a bit worse than I remembered it... Peeling paint. Some rust at the base of the A-pillar. Broken drivers door checklink & inoperative door-handle. Cracked windscreen. Bent wheel with worn & damaged tyres. Scraped left frt & rear guards (especally frt)! 1995 EG Civic hatch, Harvard blue, injected D15B7 5sp. manual 325k km. Though I guess it is a bit of a 'country' car so mileage is a bit miss-leading for its condition, with relatively unworn interior trim.
Naturally I'd be glad to have it..

So now that I knew a few things the Civic needed I was off to local wreckers parts hunting. I'd already spotted a similar Civic with a set of Koni adjustable coilovers (inc. spring platform), even if one was very bent.. but yard had sat it on it's belly so I couldn't grab them at the time, & hoped they'd still be there! Returning to the yard I got them to move the car to grab the coilovers (I already had some without the adjustable spring-platform, but we all like to play with those), parcel shelf, windscreen side trim. Whislt there I got talking with someone who was rallying one & had spotted another the same colour as mine at another wrecker. So off to another wrecker for a replacement front guard. So I was back to my friends the next weekend to fit the 'new' frt guard and replace the door checklink before the door got damaged without one. Also had the door latch apart so the door handle worked again (missing plastic bushes), fitted a CRV locking actuator while at it. Fitted a battery, inflated tyres & got it started to drive it around his drive to make sure all was still well after its years inactive, then gave it a wash & took some photos of it wet for encouragement showing how good it would look if the paint weren't dead. Must admit I have some doubts about the paint colour since the pearl in it gives a milky dirty shade compared to a lighter, brighter (& rarer ) Captiva blue Honda had also offered on these Civics.

Said I'd been buying some bits with it in mind.. Not that I'd necessarily use any of them as-is.. What colour fabric should I choose if I re-trim the JDM EG6 seats/interior? Red, Blue, Yellow ? Need some spare door trims to experiment with too now! Still not convinced about the JDM rear seats/trims yet though since ironically, despite giving more of a 2+2 look with the rear seats folded down, they reduce storage space for bigger objects. The seat pivot point is higher, with a higher false floor & storage bin below to give a flatter floor than the (mostly) folded standard seats (frt pushed up by seat base). Compromise not easy since so much was changed between the two designs. Stylish rarity Vs Std load practicality...

Having cleaned up the car & made sure it was working properly I was able to use the workshop's trade plates to drive it the relatively short distance there. Thankfully it drove well without giving any sign of the slipping clutch, despite the Rev-counter positively zooming from 2000->7000 RPM with scant regard for the 6500rpm redline... I later found it claimed 1500rpm @ 100kph, so that's definitely not working correctly. I wasn't eager to drive it the greater distance home @ freeway speeds on it's damaged tyres though, sidewall bulging on one, torn rubber on another, & I found a 3rd worn to it's steel-belts on one side! I brought another set of good wheels & tyres to the car only to find 3 not holding air.. Then visiting wreckers buying a decent rear bumper for Prelude & hoping to find another of the aftermarket ROH wheels on the Civic I instead found & eagerly bought a pair of good DC2 Integra GSR/Vti-R/SiR alloy wheels for $50, just need 1 or pref 2 more to have another set for Integra if CR-X is keeping its set... Checking Ebay for any more Integra wheels I spotted some other interesting looking wheels at a silly price & put in a low initial bid until I could check the pictures properly & forgot about them. Panic ensued when I tried to increase my bid to something more realistic & lost internet in the auctions closing seconds!. Only to find afterward that I'd 'won' the set for $60. Seem to be a reasonable Taiwanese copy of Rays Gram-light wheels. 15x6.5" @5kg. Collected them on my trip back to the car. Two good tyres & came with some thin wheel-nuts to suit the wheels.. though wrong thread pitch for me. Another trip home for appropriate wheel-nuts and eventually I got them on & was able to use the trade plate again to get it home & swap it for the Integra to get that checked for it's return to the road. What wheels do peoples like? Bent ROH, DC2 or the black ones (with or without black paint).

So further investigation of Civic followed. Was suspicious of the shape of left rear. Obviously scraped, repaired & scraped again... Exactly the sort of thing I'd usually avoid as too dodgy & difficult to rectify. The angle mismatch towards the filler door especially worrisome. Interior trims removed for a look inside.. so a professional effort. They must have 'repaired' far more than required, worse than excessive filler. Wonder if it can be salvaged or if I might be better off cutting a complete, good rear 1/4 at a wreckers while they are still available (they won't be for long). Even if I don't intend to use it for several years! Right side slightly bent under bumper, but also some filler high on the 'c' pillar. With evident work performed inside, not too smooth. Water was also getting into the boot on the right side, found it was coming from the roof! So seam-seal needs replacement. Managed to get a good pair of doors for $55, only missing pillar trims & window switches, since the both mine have innumerable small dents & left also looks to have filler & repaint with the rear 1/4.. So now I have spare interior door trims for cloth colour experimentations... And I found some interesting cloth discounted from $30/mtr to $30 for 4m, so I've plenty to play with.. I like the Yellow but thought it would need a brighter blue to work, & I gather Honda's yellow was only for yellow cars, with blue for blue cars. And the fact this cloth was on sale...

Not forgetting other projects I also bought the ECU, wiring, fuel-pump & pipes from another Concerto to inject another ED Civic. (I've already got the engine with alternator, manifold, t'body etc.) Drat forgot about throttle cable.. And a good rear bumper & a pair of Japanese market headlights for the '92 Prelude These are plastic & incorporate the side lights more neatly, where Honda played it safe for most export markets with traditional glass lenses & separate corner lamps. I'd already bought a Left side example, but with a black bezel.. so still on the lookout for a right one to complete that pair..

Some exciting news. Finally got the DC2 Integra certified as road-worthy & back on the road with only complaints about the wipers not wiping enough area & dirty brake fluid. Turned out I'd mixed up the wiper arms after painting. Found the local registration authorities have started re-using 1979-80 era registration numbers in B&W as an extra cost option.. & with a Black car the temptation was irresistible despite limited funds. Timing belt replacement followed since I didn't have service history. Looked like it was justified with some wear evident & a tooth out on its timing. Replaced the Waterpump, tensioner bearing & frt crank seal while I was at it but didn't replace the cam seals in the kit since the old crank seal was still soft (& I think I should have loosened the cam pulley bolts while the old belt was on). It's also idling @ 1500 RPM when warm so I'll have to find out how to adjust that. Of course ABS light has also started to come on. I've tried bleeding the ABS pump so replacing pressure reservoir seals might be the next option.. short of pulling out the whole system & looking at fitting the newer, more conventional & reliable system from '98-01 Integra. No chance to celebrate though.. Mum's House, (where I've been staying to help for most of the last 2-years) burnt to the ground while I was away for a few days. Thankfully she's OK, '88 Integra & Rusty air-cooled Z-360 didn't fare so well. Hot enough for the rear 1/4's to sag under their own weight & glass headlight lens' to melt out of their housings. Aside from many family items & antiques, clothes etc. I've also lost MANY car magazines, books & brochures back to the '50s collected by Myself, Father & Grandfather, & my own collection of 1:24 kits, 1:18 die-casts & hundreds of Matchbox, Hotwheels, Corgi, Majorette, Tomica, Siku, RoadChamps, JohnnyLightning, Yatming & so many other brands of those scales. Still sifting through the ashes for survivors since I've found some of the smaller cars (that were in draws on the floor) to suggest more are there.. Amazing when so little else remains, though they've been smooshed from one end of the house to the other in clearing the collapsed steel roof & ensuring fires weren't smoldering beneath...

Plenty of chaos & things I don't want to think about too much yet. Automotively Integra provided a minor panic when I looked at temperature gauge as I stopped to put it in garage after a long drive home, including some final hills @ full revs & pottering up the long drive, to see it was HOT. Obviously there was still air trapped in the cooling system, so hopefully no serious damage there. I'd also been distracted by the windscreen wipers attacking the pillar trim & cowl when at their fastest, so had to pull out the wiper linkage & swap with Blue Integra due to a failed plastic pivot bushing. I also found time to straighten & paint some bent metal behind the bumper of Blue EG Civic. & while buying a replacement headliner for the Blue Civic, found & bought a cheap pair of facelift '98-01 Integra bumpers. Would need matching lights to use the front bumper, though admit I'm not convinced I want to use them. The rear bumper revision continuing its side shapes further around the back & adding a fake vent along the lower edge instead of wrapping upward at the rear on the original design. The front bumper integrates its chin piece (rather than separate) & adds has a more aggressive trapezoid grill (rather than rectangular), but adds a weird crease inboard of the flusher headlight lenses.

Having driven the Integra around for a while I thought it time I put on the adjustable Tein suspension. Thinking lower does look better & long front overhang doesn't look so obvious, but soon led to removing the front mudflaps since they scraped upon speed bumps, or bumps taken at speed. It also meant fitting some cheap camber adjustment arms to save my tyres. Rear proved no problem, however starting upon the front I finally found out why that was squeaking so annoyingly; LF upper wishbone bushes had failed. Reassembled awaiting replacements.. Found Concerto/ED Civic used slightly narrower bushes... Bought the bushes from the blue Integra that had provided last weeks bumpers. Removed the RF upper wishbone to fit the cheap adjustable wishbone. Not good quality though. Body mountings 3-6mm too close together. They bolt up around the bushes fine but being too close between the two arms the strip between the bushes pushes their mountings in odd directions that would make fitment difficult even though they might flex enough to fit correctly once tightened up. So original wishbone was re-fitted with the new bushes on the left side, & not without difficulty since I had pulled the front knuckle out of the way for access & inadvertently pulled the driveshaft out of its inboard CV joint cup.. & it didn't want to go back in. So I had to undo & pull back the rubber gaiter to get its sliding guides back into place in the cup & gaiter refastened in-situ under the car 5" over my chest. Will see if wishbones can be bent for appropriate fit before I try them again. Simpler & far less flashy eccentric aftermarket mounting bushes for the standard arms now look like a better budget adjustment over a limited range, even if they absurdly cost more! Also added a 10mm strip of red reflective tape along the lower crease of the rear bumper to accentuate its shaping slightly. And found I had to add a return spring to the solenoid I had fitted to open the rear hatch, without the spring to push the solenoid back out to its extended length it was triggering the dash warning light to falsely claim the hatch was open. Removed & adjusted the cold idle control valve on the throttle body, re-sealing it upon assembly which has brought down the idle speed (cold & warm) to a respectable level. Gave it an oil & filter change, which is now leaking! Filter seems tight so guess I should get another. Will loosen & re tighten first.

Working upon DC2 Integra I was looking forward to finally fitting my revised sunroof & headliner after sewing on LED strips to replace the roof light , and washed the rear window in preparation for tinting before finding damaged demister strips that would need repairs first, so await conductive paint. Driving home I had a worrying coolant leak from a small hose I thought I'd replaced when adjusting the cold idle valve, & was also intending another oil change to a lighter oil than the 15w40 I'd used causing leaks @ VTEC solenoid valve & oil filter. .. When I noticed the lwr left suspension arm bolt was loose & wouldn't tighten. The weldnut in the frt subframe had come adrift & undone.. Looks like I'll have to remove the subframe to try & reattach it, engine mount, steering rack, suspension arms, a-roll bar, g-shift, exhaust to undo. And weldnut is inaccessible inside subframe. So DC2 Integra is off the road & CR-X back in service after replacing battery terminals so I could fit a standard battery to replace its dead one.

Removed front subframe & drilled a pair of holes either side if the problematical left lower suspension arm weld-nut (lower right of picture). I managed to fasten the loose nut inside the subframe to its bolt with a finger through a drain hole, so I could weld through the holes to the sides of the weld nut. Having it out naturally I could not resist sanding it for a coat of some black enamel 'anti-rust' paint I had. Subframe back in, anti-roll bar, suspension arms, shift-linkage, exhaust system, rear engine mount re-fitted. Unfortunately I'd pulled the front hubs outward too far during the exercise & pulled the cv-joint out of its cup .. & it wouldn't go back in. I had to undo its rubber gaitor & battle the grease to get the cv joint sliders back on to the cup. So not an enjoyable exercise, but done eventually.

So with subframe done I was FINALLY able to do something about fitting the new & revised sunroof & headliner I'd slowly been working on for months now. To recap, the sunroof sunshade & headlining blocked a 3rd of the sunroof glass, even if it didn't actually open further, probably a hold-over design from metal sunroofs that had been required in Japan for many years when the ministry of transport would not alloy glass sunroofs. A spare sunroof & headlining were cut so the opening would match the glass size, with need to replace the sunshade with a smaller 2-piece shade if it were to be retained. The headlining sunroof edge soaked in water & squashed for a week to dry out & adopt a crease similar to the factory one.

The headlining needed minor repairs for wrinkles in the vinyl & scratches. I tried some flexible urethane adhesive to fill these but it was difficult to apply neatly & didn't adhere quite as well as I'd hoped & could be rubbed off. I tried some vinyl repair adhesive but that tended to shrink as it dried. A friend who does vinyl repairs filled the crevices with sodium bi-carb (baking powder), solidified with super glue to provide a hard surface that could be lightly sanded & painted. Enlarging the sunroof also meant relocating the interior light... & I didn't want it further back so decided upon LED strips held in silicon tubes sewn on both sides of the headlining. I didn't want them to be obvious so painted the white background to match the headlining, it was still more obvious than I wanted so painted a strip of paper to cover the LEDs inside the silicon tube. And new 2-piece sunshade made from 2mm thick 3-layer plywood, soaked & dried while bent over a form to match the slight curvature of the roof, arched to prevent it sagging in the middle. Aluminium an alternative I considered but for cost available.. especially when the wood-grain was still clearly visible after several coats of paint. So I covered them with some thin adhesive vinyl, reflective on top to block heat, 'leather grained' & painted underneath to match the headlining. 10mm Aluminium strips attached to the front edges of both pieces & 6mm fabric 'ribbon' used to join the 2-pieces & fasten the rear to the sunroof frame. Old vs New, mounted in the frame - also sliding further rearward over the sunroof motor & slightly re-bent cable pipes. I also gave the upper rear of the headlining board a coat of fiber-glass polyester resin to protect it from water damage should the sunroof drain-tubes block & water instead overflow onto the headlining.. as it evidently had before, marking & warping the old headlining. AND immediately regretted it as the vinyl underneath wrinkled badly in response! But to my relief that disappeared as it dried.

Results Original: Revised: I'm very happy with the results. Still working upon new front map lights since Honda's effort had to go in order to put a new 3-position rocker switch in their place to control the interior light. And I should have added a 'bump' to the edge of the sunshade with a matching detent in its guide track to hold it more securely in the fully open or closed positions...

More action. Aside from other work I ended up helping Wrecker friend some more. He'd got himself a DC2 Integra like mine cheaply after the previous owner had tried to replace the starter motor & failed, jamming an inappropriate (!) Non-VTEC B18B starter into place & rounding off fastening bolt-heads so he couldn't get it out, before giving up & selling it. A 6-point (rather than 12) socket removed the problem bolts & I wound up re-fitting its old starter that seemed to be working fine... An old aftermarket Alarm with no sign of remote controls then had to be removed before it could be started & returned. I like the colour but comparison shows the advantage of removing the rear spoiler & wiper from mine. Wonder if he'll actually keep it long & hope it finds somewhere safe to hide, since he'd already got himself a cheap Renault Megane 5dr Turbo about to go on the road, and immediately afterwards a cheap CRX 'Del-Sol' Targa that's much more of a fun toy car. His Integra then swapped its place on my drive for the sad Prelude he'd promised previously... It's a JDM import with the desirable top-spec. H22 Vtec motor, 5-speed Man, 4 Wheel Steer with various notable accessories like 9-speaker stereo. Elec. folding mirrors, frt fog lights, cruise & climate control, floor mats, window visors. Safety obviously not such a concern without bumper reinforcements, airbags or ABS. I could do without the the rear wiper & spoiler, & a glass sunroof would be nice.. Though that's of little concern considering the other work it now needs. It's complete exhaust system has been removed & lost including CAT & sensors & it was moved about with a forklift damaging the fuel tank before another car was sat upon its roof. Aside from big new dents added to the RR 1/4 & FL guard. It's also suffering rust under the LF windscreen trim & (original!) windscreens cracked. So a replacement drivers door & passenger frt guard were first on the shopping list for $110.

The Prelude pictures were taken afterwards, as it was a late night getting that delivered to my drive before I headed off my parents place for Christmas Eve.. Only to come round an 80km/h curve in the road at 1am Christmas Eve just as a medium size Kangaroo was crossing. No time to react which was probably for the best even if I was dawdling along @ 70 something given likely swerving & late corner braking side effects. Just a thump in the dark with horrible implications, that surprisingly didn't look too terrible in daylight & I consider that lucky. Glad I hadn't fitted my replacement bonnet yet! But of course a big plastic nosecone can hide plenty beneath with the radiator/bonnet latch support pushed down 20?mm crushing the headlight & breaking its mounts lens & housing. So naturally nosecone, bumper reinf., lights, latch, Radiator & Pwr-steer oil-cooler off & working around the A/C condenser to gently push the structure back into position with pliers, jack, hammers, wood, lumps & plates of steel on Christmas Eve & Boxing day. I think I did OK but now that it's reassembled nosecone/bonnet gap may be improved if structure could be pulled/pushed forward 10mm? & I also really want to rid that of a dozen or so un-necessary holes, besides the paint on my replacement bonnet isn't good, headlights need polishing, structure paint flaking needs touching up so not finished yet... Rusty A/C condenser brackets & Pwr-steer oil-cooler at least sanded & painted while I was at it, Condenser & Rad brackets also revised to mount under frt structure rather than atop. Red reflective tape added behind 'H' badges to make me feel better & it's back on the road again.
