Hello, just thougth id post my latest project up here. I currently own 2 minis; A 1986 red mini (which is currently at a friends farm rotting away waiting for me to weld her back together); And a 1985 mini in Island blue, with OEW roof. So the blue mini has been an absolute nightmare!! After 10 days the big end went BIG time lol so had to tow it back from bristol to worcester! Then replaced the 1275 with a 1293, and its been blowing head gaskets a LOT, roughly 1 a week! So I had the head skimed before I took it over to the Nurburgring. Blew a head gasket in belgium and changed it in under an hour (whilst still bloody hot). So it blew again the other day and after a compression test and finding just over 0 on the gauge on cylinders 1, 2 and 3! ive decided I'm going to rebuild the 1293. But for the time being I'm going to be building something a little more "fun". See I'm all for small bore engines. In 2006 at avon park I pulled a 19.03 second quarter mile in my 998 against a VTec conversion (loosing by 0.34 of a second) and since then ive always wanted to see what I can get out of a small bore engine. I have a 1048 planned at some stage. About a year ago I purchased a "fancy" head off ebay. Its a slark race head. Its a 12g295 which was the 998 cooper head but the valves have been replaced with 32mm and 29mm. Its been gas flowed, ported, polished, and has double valve springs. I rang Slark to check the work was carried out by them, and Brian Slark confirmed it. He also told me that I got a bargain as the work today would cost around £700+vat!! So my plans are to buy a standard 998, stick a lairy ass cam in it and stick my Slark head on. Pictures of the head; Might also stick this on for a bit of "ICE" lol ;D Pie

Blue Mini looks great. Shame about the engine problems. Tuned small bores are the stuff! There was life before 1275's!

I like the blue'un! Red'un needs sorting but you seem a bit busy at the mo...
Shame about the engine woes - our boring 998cc Mini just keeps going. Well, it will until the wings rust off it...

Thats another great thing about small bore engines. Even if you blow the head gasket, you can drive it for ages lol.
The red one has basically been stripped of its goodies so the blue one (and i) can enjoy them. example, 6point cage, bucket seats, harness's.
I thik its time to face reality and flip front the red one.

Right then, ive managed to get a complete 998 engine and all ancilleries in good condition thats already been stripped so thats some of the work and time already done for me. Pics of what ive bought[/u] Plans[/u] - Get block decked
- Get my Slark head skimmed (So both are level and I'm not going through head gaskets like I am at the moment.)
- Get pistons cleaned up
- Choose and buy cam
- possibly get flywheel lightened
- Possibly modify crank
- Build up engine
- Paint it BMC green
Well I spose I best get busy, would ideally like it done before the Malvern Mini show which is November 25th, but it might be a push seeing as I travel around the world with work. The next few weeks I'm in Amsterdam (love it), Milan and Cannes so we will have to see what happens. Pie

Right think I'm decided on cam. I'm gonna bite the bullet and go the hole hog, oh yes 649! And I'm not the reprofiled 649 I'm talking the original rover spec, same as what they used in the Rover metro challenge races. It's a 300 degree duration cam with a valve lift of .470 when used with high lift rockers (.4" with stock)! That should give you some idea of how lairy it is. It was either that or the leyland profiled 544.
Also realised i need to get the block pocketted so the vlaves wont meet the pistons lol
So the work I'm gonna get done to the head/block is;
Decked block skimmed head block then pocketed, honed and chemically cleaned.
This will just be so i know for sure its all good.

It's gonna be a flier for sure. 300 degree cam = lumpy tickover. Spot on. Paint it bmc green definately.

Oh fo' sure lol
BMC green is the best as people always ask what your running and when you say "998" their face is a picture and they usually think your joking.
the cam is the lairiest cam about.

Oh pie!!! This is not one of your "buy loads of stuff, never fit it and constantly ramble on about what your 'gonna' do" kinda forums These people can actually hold a spanner and their completely mad projects acctually get finished with spectacular results. Soz, allow me to introduce myself, i'm Dan.... i too have a mini, and i too live in worcester... .i've been lurking around on this forum for about a year now and i love it, great job lads. Some of these projects are insperational, stoopendus. Now pie, stop starting project threads everywhere and get on with doing something He he

lol don't worry dan, this isnt going to sit in the shed with all the other parts lol
This is actually going to happen and its looking like sooner rather than later.
Was going to order camkit today but minispares havent got them in stock till next week. Have been thinking about this a lot last night, Think i might get a few extra goodies for it. Might be talking new gearbox for it. Its certainly on the list of dreams lol

Tuned small bore sounds great. The original idea that the Cooper was based on only used an 1100cc formula junior engine. Love the look of that Slark head, proper bit of kit.

Well a little bit of an update. Ive not bought the cam or anything for the engine (Boooooo) nope Ive bought a completly new gearbox!! (oowwww) Yep i bit the bullet and have on order; Straight cut, close ratio gearbox, with a 3.44 final drive and 4pin diff with central oil pickup. Everything in the box is brand new and the s/c parts are trans-x and the ST spec, so what Paddy hopkirk would have used back in the days of rallying. So thats it for now. Have been busy with work, brussells, milan, canne! maybe now ill be in the uk for a bit and can get this engine sorted. November 25th looks too soon on the calender, can someone move it please??

I'd be weary pieman, if its that £400 one off ebay. Consider a gearset costs £420, and a rebuild parts costs £100. I'm not sayin don't go for it, i use 2nd hand parts all the time, but be aware that it is 2nd hand, and u'll have no comeback if anything goes wrong. Si still aint got back to me with a quote for my parts yet

It is off ebay, but ive spoken to the guy via email and on the phone a lot.
Its £425 for the box, then £20 for the FD, and £155 for the 4pin diff.
The drops are £195 and he reckons he can get s/c drops for a 998. But after speaking to simon@minispares I'm not 100% on this. Going to ring simon from Morspeed as ive heard he uses the bush from a standard drop and puts it onto the s/c drop, so I'm gonna see what he has to say abuot it.
As for the gear sets its £420 retail, so being trade and looks like he buys in bulk which will probably give him more discount. You know how its works, look at your quote from si.

Well its about time for an update. Red mini is now sold will be going on saturday, cant believe ive sold my first ever mini. Reason for this is the blue engine, well its shagged to say the least. Brank needs a full regrind, big ends, mains, thrust washers. Block needs hone or rebore, skim and clean. New pistons are needed as number 3 wasnt only pitted but has a chunck missinnf out the side of it. Cam bearings need replacing, and there is other stuff on the list. This would have set me back over £1000. Thought about doing the 1048 megabeast but that would have set me back nearer £2k so am ghoing down the route of buying an engine kit from Morspeed. Now ive heard about the waiting times but this is for built/half engines and not kits. Spoke to simon at morspeed and he is aware that i am aware of the problems and has assured me that there wont be any issues with waiting, 10 days max. So itll be a 1330 with DCOE40 weber, tasty cam (to be decided) and a fancy head, which ive already bought and possibly some other trick bits. I will uprate the diff pin, and the guy started gettign funny about the s/c gearbox so i didnt buy it in the end. Ill probably buy a s/c c/r box from Bromsgrove engine services when i have the money. So thats that really. Engien kit will be ordered as soon as a cheque clears and then itll be built up. Pics an updates will be made when they happen. Pie
