Well, having finally done something to it I figure I ought to start a thread over here... This is a '72 Saab 95 (wagons were 95's, saloons 96's). It's powered by a 1500cc Ford V4 which is a German Taunus engine and doesn't share anything with the 2 litre V4 used over here in the Corsair. Its mounted longitudinally right at the front of the car with the gearbox behind and has fr*nt wheel drive The box is a four speed with column shift and a free-wheel device that can be engaged or disengaged. This allows clutchless down shifts and was introduced on the early two stroke cars for engine lubrication reasons and kept on the V4's as an economy device. Coil spring suspension all round and 15" wheels with a near unique stud pattern (5 x 170) Oh, and its a seven seater as there's a rear facing seat that folds out of the boot floor It proved a bit unreliable at first but new ignition parts seem to have made a considerable difference. So have same sized tyres all round . I think it still suffers from some fuel vapourisation when hot and I may end up putting an electric fuel pump on it to replace the engine mounted mechanical one. So after a few weeks collecting a few bits together and making/modifying stuff to fit.... I've won a really good drivers seat on Ebay though the seller has not been responding as I suspect he wasn't happy with the sum it went for But if he does come through then that'll smarten the interior up no end.

Hmmmm, nice. Have been doing a lot of research on the 96 and 95 recently - did you know that Erik Carlsson competed on the 1961 Monte Carlo rally in a 95 estate? Was the only Saab available with a four speed gearbox at the time! He came fourth.

Dollywobbler, the chap who we bought it from told us that obscure rally fact. I can't find a photo of it anywhere though. You come across anything? Well, the chap up north came through with the seat and we picked it up during our weekend up in Manchester. The Saab survived its 450 mile round trip pretty well including some slow motorway traffic and horrendous weather all the way home. He also supplied me with some other items visible in the boot that might come in handy I got a little play time in the dry earlier and swapping the seat was as simple as sliding the damaged one off the runners and sliding the new one on! It makes a huge difference both to comfort and the way the interior looks so I'm well chuffed. ;D

I love these things - takes me back to the early 80s - we used to get taken to school in a green one.
I would have loved to have been in the final design selection meeting where the gaffer stands up and says "Right, this is the one we're building, if you don't like it then shove off to Volvo"!!
(Elk antler gear stick and handbrake FTW...)

great stuff seth, i love it my dad has shown me pics of his old 96 in the past- it was an early 2 stroke, in red- but he rally blacked the bonnet and wheels, put spotlights on and took off the airfilter for the "pop pop bang" effect- very unlike my old man, he tended to favour luxurious cars like rover p6's and triumph 2000's in the main. It has a very unique character though the estate or "95" as they're called (never knew that) so great choice, will watch the thread with interest

Great motor there Seth..... and the interior looks a beaut now. So it's going to be 'hard slammed' ( I love it when you learn the right term for some mod you've done but never knew what to call! ;D ) Was the Monte car a 2stroke? Rings some kind of bell but not sure..... probably completely on the wrong path! - leaving now!

Seth - sorry, never did find a photo of the 95 in action but I have heard it from Erik Carlsson first hand - and I'm not going to argue! (A. because he is huge and B. More importantly because he is such a top bloke.)

A few more bits and pieces done to this now, trying to iron out a few bugs. I'm hoping that this electric fuel pump will solve the fuel vapourisation issues I've been having. I'll find out next time I get stuck in traffic on a hot day! I've replaced all the rubber fuel hose while I was at it too. There was a loose baffle in the rear silencer that rattled annoyingly and it was also blowing so I've chopped it off and fitted part of a stainless MGB system I picked up off Ebay for a couple of quid. The tail pipe sits a bit low so I may yet change it again but I'll see. Here's the original strange shaped device... ...and this is what its like now. I've used the single straight through "bomb" silencer and driving the car now has me grinning like a cheshire cat as it makes that silly, loud "brappp" noise only a cherry bomb can ;D But with added Subaru overtones form the V4 firing order

Good work, Kennedy.
I still have the horn for this car. We must arrange a 'swap play'.

I know I said I was planning red bands to go on here but yesterday I came across this in my mum's shed... I must have bought it years ago and I'm pretty sure its the stuff I used on my T's crossplies to good effect. So today I've done the decent thing. I've only done the one side to see how I feel about them and to see how it survives some road miles as paint can be a bit unreliable. I'll probably do the other side as well though.
