Nice job on the MOT. Nice to see one of these getting some love. Had a mate who stuck a 2ltr zetec in with about 160bhp, was more than a little fast! cheers, theres one on ss1turbo.com which has a zetec in it. certainly a tempting conversion, but having just done all this work on the CVH i think it will be staying; and its not as bad as people make out, responds pretty well to mods and can be made to make pretty good power. the next stage of development is to build the 1640 bottom end which is in the shed. should be getting pretty close to 160hp then with some other tweeks. mapable ignition is somthing else i want to try in time, disi is a right pain to get to and its the first step towards TBs! cant wait to start sorting the cosmetics out!

Nice to see some more about this car again. I have a steering wheel that was on the SST when I bought it. YOu can have it for the cost of postage if you like. It's a 3 spoke Mountney sort of thing. Send me a PM and I can email you a picture to see if you want it. When I had my Sabre K I found the cheapest way to get wheels with the correct offset were to buy BMW E30 wheels. I got an aftermarket set of 15"'s for £50:

I'm really after a set of ATS Cups in 15x7. they do two different offsets, one for golfs, one for BMW E30s! i will make the decision after some careful calculations / photoshops! but its good to know that e30 wheels are as a rule of thumb correct, as they had some BBS type wheels which could look pretty good on it (kind of 1800Ti) nice Sabre! what have you got now?

I've got a SST 1800Ti Now (and a Cat C damaged SE6a): The Sabre is flattered in the picture. It had a bump on the n/s coner, but then again I didn't pay much more than £1k for it. It's now gone to a guy from the RSSOC who is replacing the 1400 Rover engine with a CA18DET from a 200SX ;D

i have been out and about in it last night, and although its running better than it ever has been, its certianly not making peak power and get bogged down upto about 4k rpm; and then it really screams from 4-6. so i will book it in with a rolling road to get it all setup.
its awesome to drive, the seats are dreadful though, your cornering ability is limited not by the grip on the road, but by your grip on the seat / steering wheel! it also has a strange problem that if its really hot and you turn it off / stall it turns over very slowly, not fast enough to start? but if you leave it a few minutes it starts fine; so i need to look into this; this and the fact its a bit hit n miss if you get 1st or reverse means I'm a bit put off from taking it to the beach tomo as there will be quite a lot of queing.
the sst is nice; sorry i didnt get back to you about those SE6 parts, everything got very busy here and i couldnt see how to get them too you!

I had the starting when hot problem on my CVH engined Quantum. I replaced the starter, alternator and battery and nothing helped. Then someone asked if I had a tubular manifold fitted (which I did). He said to heat wrap the manifold. I wrapped the manifold in thermotek and also one of the silver blankets on the starter. It's been no problem since then. What SE6 parts were they again?

What SE6 parts were they again? interesting! it just seems to crank over slowly, like it has a flat battery, but it isnt. after a few mins (i guess once its cooled down) it starts fine. the battery is in the boot, so it might be related to the lenth of cable from front to back not being heavy duty enough? but its fine when its cold. i have some heat sheild cloth stuff, so will try it on the starter motor. it used to do it a bit with the stock manifold, but i have now fitted the later, better flowing cast manifold. i could try wrapping that i guess. i was breaking an SE6 and you needed the rear 1/4? i think it was you!

done a few jobs, so its time for an update. sunday night i set out to fix a few jobs and had one of those nights: - Electric window wont work - unplug the motor and put the multi meter across the socket, 12v up, -12v down. not the wiring in the car or switch then, so i stripped the motor out of the door and have a good look, having opened up the motor, put it back together i put a battery strait on it, up, and down. fixed?! i plug it into the car, still only goes up! i swap the switch with the drivers side one. up and down. so i didnt need to take that appart then! oh well. - mount the bucket seat, spent ages bolting the seat to the runners, assumeing i could drop the seat to the lowest setting to get it about the same height as stock (for now) but found it wont go down as the side mounts foul the body of the seat. so i gave up on that for now. - adjust the passenger door so it shuts properly, much shimming, but to no avail! it was exactly the same. bums. however, last night i got in to find dad had removed and rehung the pasenger door, and had got it spot on! nice! looks cool without the quaterlight. i refitted the motor, that all works now too. and my quick shift had arrived, so that went on: i had to ditch the leather gaiter for now as it wont go over the stick, but i don't know if i will refit it. the rubber one is good enough. you now have to push the stick down to get reverse! RESULT! that will stop me scareing people at traffic lights! (i got reverse instead of 1st 3 times in a row, edgeing backwards towards a rather scared lady!) the stick is slightly the wrong shape. it needs to be kinked forwards as its too far back. i can wrest my arm on it and hold onto the steering wheel lol. but its a huge improvement! the old stick: i also raided the spare collection: a pair of matching really good door cards (except the glue and a hole cut for a speaker - fixable) and some mats!: the carb balancer arrived so i rebalanced the carbs and found that on the rear carb number 4 air bypass valve was loose, and number 3 was missing! so dad used the pilar drill like a lathe, and knocked up a replacedment. with this set its running REALLY well! so i gave it a wash n a polish! need to get some of the last dead flys off the front bumper - i think they will have to be T cut off as they must have been on there since it was last on the road (2years ago!) but it polished up really well. a few chips need touching up and theres a patch on the pilar where we have polished through just after we painted it: pics don't do it justice! its got a really good shine. tonight i hope to swap the hard top for a hood; fit the door cards and maybe a stereo, finish polishing the front bumber and adjust the carpets a bit ready for no-rice on wednesday night! some passing shots from friday night: oh, and my new steerign wheel arrived from Skip_Rat this morning. cant wait to get home and try it! Many thanks!

Nice to see some more progress with this. I really should do some more work to mine. I've got a rollover hoop to fit, I need a new soft top and I've been given a HKS EVC which I'm told will work with the car

cool, does your car have a thread on here?
I'm sure i can come up with somthing for the steering wheel; the wheel mountney from the kitten fitted, but its only 11" and slow speed steering was already quite heavy, and is only going to get worse when i find some 15x6.5s / 7s. but i might be able to swap bosses with the kitten, as its a steel one so i can cut it and weld it to make it a bit shallower, and then use the ss1 boss on the kitten, we will see! i don't know where i will end up with the bucket seat either. that might help.
is your SST standard? or are there plans in the pipe line? they are certianly rife for modification!
roll hoops are certainly worth fitting! but iirc ares was a bit of a pain to fit as we had to borrow some mounting plates to get copied as our hoop didnt have any with it, then we had to drill all thr mounting holes are it wasnt built with one. i need to add a harness bar as soon as i can find some suitable tube.
again, thanks for the steering wheel! if theres any bits you need give us a shout.

I think there is a thread but I haven't updated it in ages It's pretty standard as I've only had it a year and it took an age to find new front wishbones for it. I did use superflex bushes during the suspension build and Gaz shocks (which I found were much better than the Spax that the Sabre had). I think I got the mounting plates with it if they are the ones that go to each side. How did you go about drilling the holes through to the chassis, from above or underneath?

cool. yea, gaz are way better than spax. this one has spax on the front at the moment, and stock ones on the rear; but theres a pair of brand new avos waiting to go on the rear when I get around to ordering springs, and some brand new 1800Ti front springs - but I'm a bit 50/50 about fitting those as they are probably designed to counteract the extra weight of the nissan engine so it may sit a bit high; I want it to be about 20-40mm lower at the front than what it is now. and probably no more than 20mm lower at the back; its tempting to further beef up the wishbones (we have already braced them a bit to help prevent cracking) and then fit coil overs on the front.
I think we drilled through from underneath with a small drill bit, then went from above with the right size bit. but we had the entire car stripped to a tub (with dash, loom, windscreen) and chassis at one point so access to the rear was nice and easy. you could always cut out the section of glass, drill the holes, and bond it back in - a lot easier than stripping the end out. I assume yours arnt drilled either. annoying! i suppose with it roughly fitted in place you should be able to see where they need to go. but iirc it wasnt a great fit and took a fair bit of wiggling about to get it in.

hmm, so no-rice didnt go quite to plan. finished tidying up a few bits before i went, mats in, and carpet properly tucked under the trim - although the pasenger side still isnt quite right. i cleared all the tools off it and we set off on our way, cruising up the A3, to get to the liss roundabout where i backed off, slowed down, and pulled up at the line, where it promptly died and did its slow to turn over trick. bums. once the stupid old duffer who had decided to pull up inchs from the back of my car had got out the way i rolled back onto the hard shoulder, and a min later it started! again, as i pulled into no rice we had a repeat performance, with it dieing littlerally as i pulled into the carpark, so i rolled into a space where it stayed until it had cooled off enough to start again to be parked properly! along side my brothers, the ss1 Ti, and the skoda rapid. the journey home went OK, but it gets damned hot inside the car! even with the windows down (although, hood up) i was too hot! under bonnet temps are stupidly high so now have some exhaust heat wrap to go on at the same time as i flow the manifold for a bit more power. the new gearstick also vibrates a lot under hard acceleration, i think the plastic saddle on the selector shaft is quite warn alowing the stick to move. i hope. the shift is good and theres no more accidental reverse now though which i nice! didnt take it out at the weekend, but i did have a play with the wiring, made the clock work, and got all the wiring for the stereo in, and checked the idle mixture and balance. which was a tad out on 2 cylinders but is not spot on. also upped the idle speed, as i think the reason it died in the first place was due to it being too slow, combined with the high under bonnet tempts, it just wasnt having it; especially with the lights on. i fitted the new steering wheel, but couldnt reach the stalks, but found a different boss at an auto jumble which appears to sort it out (the boss is a lot less offset, and i have bolted the wheel to the back of a flange. i guess i could put a 1/4" spacer in there too, but i can reach the stalks and the position is good. needs fitting properly, as the boss is a 6 bolt fitting, and the wheel is a 9 bolt fitting so only 3 bolts line up. easily sorted. hopefully get the exhaust wrapped this weekend and the interior all back together shortly.

The steering wheel looks pretty good in there. ;D
Hopefully wrapping the exhaust and/or the starter will help your starting issues.

shes still going well, the quickshift leaver was vibrating like crazy due to poor tolerances on a few collets retaining the spring, so off with that on with a good stock one so i still have a gate on revese. come back to the quick shifter when i can be botherd. i fixed the clock, ran the head unit wiring and speaker wiring, took a while to sort the covers for the speakers, as there is a square recess in the dash tailored for the original speaker covers, so when you screw the new speakers in the cover bottoms against the dash, with the speaker loose in the recessed area. a bit of a bodge with some spacers and some suitably naff looking covers and it all seems to work, and sounds good the wire in the passenger footwell is for an MP3 player connection to the headunit, it hides nicely in the map pocket on the side of the tunnel, subtle and out the way. the new steering wheel is 'ard as nails and now properly fitted, just want to sort osme better bolts, give it a good clean, and find a centre cap. its bolted to the back of a quite shallow boss, which means its not too close to me. might do the exhaust manifold sunday afternoon. we will see. also trying to sort new wheels out at the moment

where are we then, all was going well, armed with this 'kit' I set to on the exhaust manifold; the aim was to reduce the engine bay temps by wrapping it: when I got it off the ports where pretty bad: but made to look a lot worse by the fact the old gasket (top) had huge holes in it for the ports, the new one (bottom) was a perfect match for the head. using a gold paint pen in the absence of any marking out blue I marked up the manifold and gave it a mild tickleing with the grinder: also did the joint between the manifold and the down pipe. this was sort of thrown on when we put the car together, the cast iron manifold actually flows pretty well for what it is and a tubular one for this aplication doesnt exist so until I sort a custom one I'm pretty stuck with it. painted, wrapped and fitted: not very neat, but its a pretty tricky shape to wrap, with some pretty big webs with it being a cast item. also found another gear knob and fitted that, and tinkerd with the quick shift padding out some of the loose fitting collets with a tiny bit of tape has reduced some of the rattles, so I now know what I need to properly remake. my tacho also arived from america; although not fitted yet so I took it for a test drive, the aim was to get it nice n' hot and see if I still had any starting problems, I took it pretty gently though and did about 10-15miles, when I got home the idle was all lumpy and slow, next I noticed a knocking noise! doh. bottom end eaten its self? I hope not. still had enough oil pressure to keep the light from coming on make it go out instantly when you start cranking. the exhaust manifold was a success, you can now put your hand next to it, and everything in the bay is generally cooler. it also glows red hot! I guess my knocking noise could be related to the glowing exhaust but I guess it could be. hmm. I had a dig in the garage and turned up the feshly bored and enamel coated block that we scored off ebay, complete with appropriate brand new +1mm ae pistons, and a pretty much complete set of shells; I had always planned to get this in there, but I guess I might be doing it sooner rather than later. more investigation at the weekend!
