The zorst boys did a very professional job. There's about 5mm of clearance round the 'box and the end pipe is stainless. ....the pipes look a lot better from above rather than at ground level They're supposed to be 100dBA max but we'll have to see at the track

Slight amount of hose bodging to get the cooling working. Only 'major' jobs left to do are install the throttle cable, put in the driver's seat and make a raising block so my poor little size sevens can actually reach the pedals ;D

If there ever was inspiration to do a custom restoration on a car, this is it. Absolutely brilliant stuff. Make sure you put up loads of videos when you get it running

It's going to be touch and go. It's being trailered to Keevil for a general setup on Monday 6th then it needs an MOT and then it needs a shakedown trip which ideally should be less than the 420 mile round trip to Mallory ;D.
See you there if I can.

Some of the trackday / shakedown day pictures are in. It was the best of times; the worst of times. I could drive it for the first time in sixteen months but not everything went right but I didn't stuff it Got to Keevil, had the newbie briefing, went out on the acclimatisation laps and then the open pit lane started. The car went very well but we had a water dump problem after every run and we hadn't taken any water! However the most enterprising team member begged a can full of the old cooling fluid from the event organisers Where's the leak??? then a few drops of oil appeared at the front and the back so out came the jack It looked like the timing cover seal had given up and that we were losing copious amounts of oil from the back axle. and eventually the vibration caused one of the bonnet locks so get out of sequence so we couldn't get the the bonnet open - end of play    H O W E V E R the good parts were awesome She goes like a scalded cat in a straight line Got the popular vote as the best sounding car of the day Out-accelerated a Porsche 997 GT3 RS (he may have been in the wrong gear but I don't care ;D ) Goes round corners better than I thought for a 1954 car with a huge weight in the front and the brakes, while needing upgrading, still hauled her down to a reasonable cornering speed from 110mph without fading too much These are off the event photographer's website hence the watermarks WATERMARKS NOW REMOVED this is the view most of the other drivers saw of us on the straights them Caterhams are buggers in the twisty bits though and then I spun out through a combination of over-enthusiasm, too much steering input and rear wheel steer and, of course, a lack of talent. Go away you nimble git So now it's back to sorting oil leaks, putting in an expansion tank to stop the overflow, fix the bonnet catches, get an MOT etc etc etc Not going to make Retro Rides with these probs though

Lovely cars.
Just wondering, is the difference in the grill dependant on model year?

Jim,
it depended on model rather than year. If I remember correctly there were only three variations with the 'v' shaped grille on the 4-cylinder cars and two types of oval grille on the later 6-cylinders ones.
Cheers,
Ian

Sitting in traffic or just leaving the car idling in the drive while opening the garage door and the temperature shoots up. The poor little 14" fan struggles to cope when the air temperature goes over 18C. Weeny fan This shouldn't happen with a Serck Motorsport radiator but I did compromise the design by insisting on keeping the bonnet hinges and that made the radiator smaller than first anticipated. Short radiator due to retaining bonnet hinges Another cooling problem was that after a few circuits on a trackday the car would be dumping water and it looked like we had a recurring air lock. Because the radiator was relatively low it meant the top hose was higher than the radiator filler. To cure this problem I fitted a Moroso top hose filler neck and fingers crossed it looks like the air lock has disappeared. I also decided to use a Stant radiator cap with a flip over valve to release the pressure safely if I get further problems. Moroso top hose fillerIn the spring the radiator comes out to have its filler neck modified and I'll tidy up the hoses then. Also I'll add another 14" fan so they run side-by-side and should provide enough low speed and warm weather cooling.

Ah well on that subject I've been collecting parts and scouring Ebay so the plan is : 1) Install CSR/Summit/Moroso type electric water pump. 2) This gives me room to fit a set of Moroso mini-J alternator brackets and one of those lovely small but powerful alternators. 3) Install second battery and charging kit and run the leccy water pump exclusively off that. 4) I've now got a complete Megasquirt kit except for a 4-barrel throttle body (anyone got one cheap with an IAC??) so the sh@gged out Holley double pumper gets the heave-ho ;D 5) A mate in the US reckons his neighbor has a set of ally heads going cheap but I'm having problems finding out exactly what they are or if they're even Chevy! 6) When this is finished I'm on the lookout for a centrifugal 'charger to fit in the gap where I moved the alternator from. The CR is already 8.5:1 so no problems there. I reckon on somewhat like 500bhp with 7psi of boost if the heads are any good. Ah dreams and choices choices Watch this space Ian
