Well, it's been a trial but my miniMetro HLS is finally home!
Drives well - super nippy (but not as quick as beige ones...) but needs more attention to stuff before I get too carried away. Thermostat is jammed open, upper balljoint on RH side needs replacing and MOT runs out in two weeks. Tax runs out today so I had to have a quick blat in it!

to be honest if its gas bag yes. Metros had a small tendancy to turn over when flat and hit and awkward bump.

Not sure. Getting very mixed messages. Bloke who had it before says that he changed the thrust bearing. My mechanic says that the thrust bearing was seized and damaged everything else.
It still judders though which is worrying - may be engine mounts. I hope!
S'pose if it's really knackered - wasn't there recently a 1982 miniMetro HLS which received a new engine?! ;D

Ahh clutch judder very common on early metros does it still have the round thing that is on the clutch hydraulic circuit as it was fitted to counteract judder.If you need a new clutch master cylinder i have a brand new genuine one plus lots of other new metro stuff.

not exactly sure how it works i think it just slows the return of the pedal.

Ah - advice elsewhere is that it was a bit of a trait of the early ones. Will let the clutch bed in and see how it goes - that'll be difficult now it is SORN'd...

Scary - was just about to search for this and Lord Young has kindly brought it back to the first page!
The Poo Brown VP Allegro thing is playing up big time (running like a sack of cack, seatbelts not jamming, exhaust too loud...) so the miniMetro suddenly finds itself faced with trying to pass a MOT tomorrow!
It won't pass - holed silencer, play in balljoint, who knows what else - but as it is at least running properly, I'm going to see if there is anything else it needs. Also needs the thermostat replacing before it sees regular service - bloomin' water cooled cars!
Wish me luck folks! Let's hope it only fails on what I already know it will!!

Knackers. The failure list was longer than I'd hoped! Not too bad really for a 25 year old Metro. A few small bits of welding, steering rack gaiter, the balljoint I already knew about, one rear brake not working properly and the exhaust.
Sadly, it'll be two weeks before the garage has time to sort that lot out. S'pose it leaves me time to fit the new thermostat and sort the dodgy wiring in the number plate lights.

Strewth! I've not seen one that old for years! is that Denim blue? That's a Birmingham number plate so it might have belonged to Austin-Morris first off. It's still have the old Mini type clutch and not the later Verto on an X plate. Mine was Vemillion, a 1.0L SLO172W and it was actually a very capable car - lots of interior room and fantastic visibility plus it handled like a go kart.

I know the car's history from new. Owned by my mate's Grandmother so it lived in Brum all of its life until I took it away (although I'm an ex-Brummie so it's ok!).
You're right about the clutch. Built Dec 81. Think mid-82 was the cut off. There is ANOTHER HLS on this forum which is a little different though...
I think it is Denim Blue. Must check the code.

Some progress. New job means I haven't had time to do anything with the Metro other than drive it around to the local garage this morning for repairs and fresh ticket. Am keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be ready for next weekend...
Is also having a new 'stat fitted and a much-needed full service. No plans to do much other than tidy it up - MOT showed that there will be some rot to attend too but hopefully it can be a rolling resto.

Yay! MoT passed! Unfortunately, the car is locked in at my local garage who have decided not to open up today. Gutted! Added confusion as they had to replace the slave cylinder on the Mini yesterday which held up Metro progress. Very frustrating but I've ordered the tax disc today so technically shouldn't drive it until I get that (which doesn't seem very fair either!).
