retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=FSW&action=display&thread=1169101202Yep......I bought it! Not saying how much I actually paid for it, but rest assured it's staying cheap and cheerful! Thanks to Lankytim and his good lady for the coffee and for the car being exactly what he said it was!!! ;D Actually the intention was to just use it as cheap wheels, but seeing as it's approaching its 19th birthday and to be honest is in pretty remarkable condition.....well, it wouldn't be right, would it?? Job One......run it for a few days and make sure everything's doing what it says on the tin, then give it a good going-over and replace all the consumables (oil, filters. plugs etc etc). Already in the pipeline.....a whopping 40mm of stick-hittage (there's a temptation to go lower, but I know how big the potholes are in the works car-park) and some 14" Mondeo steels (might go and splurge on some 15's if the Rangey costs less to repair than anticipated). Haha...it's like being 22 again ;D

Very nice! Like your plans, glad its not staying too standard, although I hope you don't change the colour or the bumpers, I like it as it is How about a 60mm drop and 15" Mongdeo steels?

60mm would be nice....but I live in a village liberally desecrated by the dreaded speed-humpage...plus it's gonna have to do 40m a day commuting (and being 42 my prostate gland's not what it was, those seats are mint hehehehehe).
The paint's mint, it's way nicer than it looks on those pics....I'll take some more this week....there's a small dent in the bonnet, but my erstwhile colleague Mr.v8devon's got another one, so that may well be getting the none-more-black satin (or flat silver, I haven't decided yet) treatment.

White lenses and a subtle drop would look spot on. Colour is great!

Plans sound ideal, yep its a daily. I struggle like hell having a daily to run into the ground i cant do it. my daily steed be it a shagged micra or minty sapph i hate to think i'll be the last so do my damnedest to keep paying those garage bills etc. its a companion yeah, oh maybe not i dunno! It does look neat, a slight tunage, some black mongdeo steelies in 15, nice rubber, stick hittage and ya winning keep it as is body wise it'll be sweet, add steering lock/security, and wax oyl. nice one!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Took some more pics this afternoon, this is after picking it up mint, and driving it 250m this week in the snow and ice..... Interior's mint.....and that's an 18 yr old Escort battery tray ;D Likes.....typical Ford heater (burns your feet after about 3 mins), 42mpg ;D, quiet (relatively, it's one of those 1300HCS lumps, so it sounds like a Talbot Alpine), stereo works. Things to do... Sort out the starter- it sometimes doesn't mesh and squeals its head off, not ideal at 4.30 am.....dumping the clutch usually does the trick, but will need to find out why it's doing it. Full service....well within the bounds of my limited mechanical ability, I'll go get the stuff tomorrow. Found a small rotten bit on the boot floor on the passenger's side above the chassis rail- the driver's side has already been plated in the same place- but with the MOT not due until June I'll worry about that later. And that's it! Bit of spannering to do, but nothing drastic....then after payday it's time for some stick-hittage and some wheels.

4 weeks, and I have to admit that other than scurrying up and down the M5 to work and back every day all I've done is throw petrol in it. Not much mind...have just filled it up for the first time in three weeks, come back and checked the mileage......and even having to do stop-start every morning and evening plus 30m on the motorway at 70-odd, it's doing a scarcely believeable 46.8 miles on every gallon of unleaded. Ker-chingg!!
Off to Rome for a long weekend in a fortnight, so am saving for that- when I get back I'll be able to start playing with it. :-)

Still clattering along nicely and running on fresh air it seems, notched up about 1500m in it now, even the starter motor's gone quiet!! Scrappy patrol in the next few days, I want Citroen Xsara 15" steel rims on it either in dark grey or body-colour with some 195/45's, gonna have a measure

I've done absolutely nothing to it, apart from an oil change just after I bought it.
Since then it's done about 5000m, has been utterly reliable and has never once let me down, whatever the weather. It's major forte has been its astonishing fuel economy, I managed 54mpg once, even a near flat-out blast to Santa Pod and back the other week saw it do 43mpg. Incredible.
Failed its MOT last Monday on a holed inner sill, holed rear wheelarch, holed floor under the drivers' seat, imbalanced front brakes and the dreaded Mk4 Escort 'disco light' rear light syndrome.
Welding was carried out by Mr. v8devon this evening for which I am eternally grateful, and for which I shall buy him several large beverages when we go see a Sex Pistols tribute band and jump around like drunken loonies next Friday.
Pics will follow tomorrow, I don't think I will be as lucky next year though. There are some seriously thin and frilly bits of metal under that shiny exterior, plus the engine is breathing like a biatch and has developed a pretty nasty bottom-end knock from cold.
So basically 6 months' tax going in the window, and run her until she drops.
NOW it's time for some silly paint fun. ;-)

Pics from finished weld-a-thon. This was the worst bit. About 6" of floor under the driver's seat had disappeared. You can't really see with the carpet back in, but the grot had spread from there down towards the crossmember and the inner sill. Now the car wears its 100E.com sticker with pride, it was repaired with 51-yr old steel from a 100E quarter panel, which was way thicker than the 1989 curse word that Ford used for the floor!!! Have cut the carpet so that MOT man can see it's been done properly. This was the NSR inner and outer sill. TBH you really wouldn't want to hit any of it too hard, it's paper-thin in places. The other bit was the box-section behind the rear wheel, couldn't really get the camera in to take a good shot of what was about 5" of missing metal.

Flipping eck, looks like its doing that famous 80's ford trick of completely dying in a very short space of time.

I noticed while it was up on the ramps that the front tyres were looking a bit short on the old trady-type stuff, so made a mental note to keep my eyes open. Imagine my delight when getting back from RR07 last Sunday and noticing these on here, free, gratis, and for nothing!! Popped down to Mowzer's home 20 this morning to collect them, so they've basically cost me 130 miles-worth of petrol, and I've got a wee something for Mowzer which I'll put in the post this week by way of a thankyou. 5.5x14 Speedlines off a 205GTi with three good and two just-legal 185/60's. I've already got two almost brand-new Michelins in my garage. I don't know how much of a ballache it's going to be mounting them on the Escort, if it's too much hassle v8devon's got some 14" Mongdeo steelies I can have, I'll just get the tyres swapped over. ;D
