Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum - It was recommended to me by G51NAV (He of Beige Maestro 'fame') I have an appreciation for older cars, 70s and 80s stuff in particular (and a soft spot for BL tin). Here's my collection... 1984 Austin Montego 1.6LThis car is the oldest Montego known to exist. Registered two days after the launch date, it is the 5,191st car built. 1598cc S-Series powered with 5spd VW gearbox. It needs a fair bit of TLC after being relatively unloved for the past few years. Repairs to a dented wheel arch, a new head gasket and a new water pump are on the cards. On the whole it has survived very well - not a spec of rust, low miles and an unmarked chocolate brown interior. Lovely! 1982 Austin miniMetro AutoMy other big love apart from Montegos are early Metros! This one spent over seven years in a garage up until 2003 and had one lady owner. Quite nippy and much like a go-kart, its fun to drive everywhere apart from on the Motorway. 1986 Austin Montego 1.6HLMy favorite car...so comfortable and relaxing to drive. The HL is a very nice trim level, and this one looks superb after a good polish - which is usually every weekend I like it that much! Again, S-Series powered...

One of my mates had a poverty-spec Montego in beige.....I remember it was B553KAB, and I'm pretty sure it was a 1.3. Did they do a production 1300 Monty?? Did we scrap a rarity all those years ago??? Welcome to the forum!

Whilst almost completely and utterly not my thing, I'm suitably impressed at your dedication to the cause - these are cars you simply do not see anymore.... How long were they building the Montego before launch? 5191 cars in 2 days sounds like quite a lot Hows the autobox in the metro - is it a nice smooth change, and is the engine enough to keep it going?

Yay for more 80's BL cars! Your Montys are really great, especially the HL, silver really does look great on the Monty You really only appreciate these cars when you see them in such nice condition, it really makes you realize that these cars simply arn't around anymore! I've only really seen 2 in daily use in the past year or so- A local battered poverty spec one that has a plywood passenger side rear window (!) and another that frequents my local pub carpark, a light mettalic blue one with purple wheeltrims (!!) Your metro is really smart too! The above applys to those aswell, you just don't see them anymore and when I do see a clean one I have to have a good look at it Welcome to RR btw

Ah, that's what my miniMetro HLS SHOULD look like! Imagine that with a bit of valance rust and covered in bird poo and you have how it looks at the moment!
Hope to have it on the road in the New Year.

theres a geezer in Crewe has a really smart early Montego, bright red. I think its an A or maybe B reg 1.6 povo spec. He stashes it away for the winter. His daily smoker is an A-reg beige Maestro with a blue rear door. Interestingly his next door neighbour has a Chevy Ghey Van and a mint Seth-style Austin A55 van.

That sounds like RobertP from the M&MOC forum. The A reg Maestro (with the Zircon Blue door) belonged to another chap from M&MOC called Chris who is fairly local to me. Back on topic - Hello Rich, fancy seeing you here...

Montegos were really good cars, I`ve got an old Autocar somewhere that tested it on its launch (I`m sure the test car was a Y-reg, pre-production perhaps?) head to head with the Sierra and Mk2 Cavalier, and it came out top overall.
My brother had a brand new G-reg Turbo diesel as a company car, flame red over grey, the restyled one with smooth back lights, and it was just about the coolest rep`s car you could get at the time except for perhaps the Cavalier 2.0 GLS.

I remember my then-girlfriend's dad taking delivery of a 2-litre Montego VDP back in about 1985. He was pulling into the driveway with it for the first time when the headlining dropped on his head!
Quick car though, he let me drive it a few times (mistake....), torque steered like a demented thing. God knows what the MG Turbo must have been like.

Utterly mental by all accounts although they sorted it to a certain degree by the time the Maestro came along.
