no track footage, but a nice stand still : it was nice to meet you again, I really enjoyed seeing (and hearing) your Escort in the flesh; I am no Ford fan at all but I like the Mk.II Escort very much.... thanks for bringing back some childhood memories (i had a couple of 1/24 Ecorts by Esci).... you need to come over soon for a BBQ .... Nice shot! Good to see you again, and I'm always up for a BBQ ;D awesome vehicle mate! I see so little of things that happen at the Gathering, but twice now (in 07 and 09) I have caught glimpses of you going round track and both times its immediately made all the stress and grief of putting on a show worthwhile! Love it, and LOVE what you do with it! That really does mean a lot, I aim to please (glad to know its working!) As long as you and the rest of the amazing team keep RRG going I'll keep coming back and testing the limits for a bit of cheap(er) extra power, go for a focus st170 head, bigger valves etc and bolts straight on. but i'll assume yuo either already know that, or know which direction to go. if you have the money, these have some good claims www.cncheads.co.uk/ford_st170.htmlST170 would be the way forward, but they ain't common and aint cheap, also have to mess around with cam tensioners I think and not sure I can use the same cams. But I have plenty of time to research while I'm out of the UK watch this space.... hope you get it sorted quick and painlessly mate really enjoyed watching it go round the track . and it was great meeting you Great to meet you too, rather have yours though Maybe we should have a burn out comp. next year?! I am seriously gonna have to up my game for 2010 God don't say that, this could start to get properly expensive and probably quite messy when I have to be pulled out of a barrier! Jon, no worries mate, anytime. Price wise I think we said 30, but you might as well keep hold of it for me Sunpcracker, they are nice aren't they not great for seeing out of, but enough! Cheap enough too

Andy - sorry to hear it popped on you...... I somehow managed to keep the Nissan healthy - so it'll be getting goodies to try and keep up with you next year As for yours - As the head is coming off anyway........ etc... etc... Great to meet you and have a laugh at Colon's terrible sense of direction (who cna blame him - he goes everywhere sideways ;D) - I'll be looking to see you on the tracks next year for sure. Lovely looking car that is used as it really is intended. Top marks.

So its taken 7 months (although really only 3 days, just haven't been in the UK!) but the old girl is running again! ;D Basically the head gasket let go due to corrosion on the head, and as the head had been skimmed a lot that ment it was time for a new head! Actually that was the perfect excuse for more power (clearly it needed it if you saw me trying to stop the thing going sideways at RRG09......) So I bought a 1.8 head (smaller combustion chambers so higher compression ratio) and then though "what the hell" and got it ported by someone who knows what they're doing! Use a guy called Neil Roper and I can't recommend him highly enough. Great price, even better work, and stuck to a time scale that wasn't easy (dictated by me being in the country!) Sorry the photos aren't very good but he's done a full porting job and given it 3 angle valve seats. All in it should really open then engine up and help it to breath and make use of the cams. Estimated power is 190-200bhp and Neil's done a few Zetecs of similar spec making this or more power so its a fair guess. But it does need tuning first, hopefully in the summer before RRG10 In other news I've re done the cooling system to add a swirl pot since the system was drawing air in at high revs - probably added to the last head gasket. Rebuilt it with a 3 piece head gasket rather than the old fashioned type and moved the alternator to the other side of the engine, one to get it away from the exhaust, but mostly to give the bottom hose a much better run to again try and improve cooling Like so And thats about it. Now the big test is getting it to PPC on Saturday. I need to fit the correct wheels, fit an alternator belt of the right length! and get some car tax all before driving to PPC since I land in the UK late on Friday. Yes I am made and yes its what keeps me sane (Did I mention I bought a 1996 XJ6 Jag when I got stuck in the UK due to the ash? Seemed like the perfect excuse ) identical to this for the pic whores

Wow, just read through all of this and I'm not usually a fan, (purely because of scene tax pushing prices out of control,) but your Escort is top notch.

Great thread. Was hoping to make PPC in the park in my e21 but other commitments mean staying at home. Maybe next time?
Think that GTV splitter might just work on my e21. Where did you get the mirrors?
Never realised just how similar mk2's and e21's can be. ;D

Where did you get the mirrors? Never realised just how similar mk2's and e21's can be. ;D Shame you didn't come along, I love a nice e21 even after spending something like 8 days welding the back end of a mates back together! If Escorts enjoy rusting, e21's are addicted to it! LOL The GTV splitter is one of those nicely retro parts that with a little thought could be made to suit anything from the 70's, I'm tempted to fit one to something else actually. As for the mirrors - www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=13026&osCsid=s3u14plesiliqu3a250806sca0www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=13027&osCsid=s3u14plesiliqu3a250806sca0hope that helps Cheers for the photo retrolegends I'm now on the hunt for some video of me drifting out of the hairpin In other news, well other than to say it works, not much ;D All going far too well, even her indoors enjoyed it (it was her first go since it hasn't worked since we met!) The flasher relay did die, but Halfords had one, and I still need to fiddle with choice of thermostat, but really its all going well. Just need to get it on the rolling road to make use of the new head now.

Thanks for the info on the mirrors. If I can suit some suitable bases I think they'll suit my car pretty well.
Does your head man have any experience of BMW m20's?

No idea, but when I was there he was working on head from a Jag XK engine, a Cosworth YB, a Lotus Twin cam, a BDA and mine, so I'm sure he could do a good job though obviously if you wanted the best possible flow it'd cost more as he'd probably have to do some flow rig development work and thats never cheap! Website is here - www.roperdevelopments.co.uk/ probably not worth mentioning my name as hes probably forgotten it since he's only had one head off me so far! Would be surprised if there wasn't a couple of specilists for m20 heads since they've been used in a few race e30's over the years. If the m20 head, is basically a 6 cylinder version of the m10, then there must be loads of experts on them cos the m10 was used in just about every form of motorsport over the years.
