As the user name suggests I own a 1981 VW Derby. Genuine 54k miles from new and doesn`t look or drive like its covered even 1 mile, nice and tight and very very solid... ;D Anyway here`s the pics of it in the glorius sunshine at Inters `06: And the only modification that I`ve carried out The car has had 1 elderly owner from new and came with a Yellow Pages size folder of history including everything from services to fuel to mileage covered in the year e.t.c and the old guys son was telling me that when the old boy bought it back in `81 within an hour of him getting it home he`d stripped the wings off and got his Wax Oyl gun out and was giving everything the treatment - and it shows, and smells as the Wax Oyl still smells strong when you get in it and is obviously a testemant to how good Wax Oyl actually is! When the car was new and on the original bill of sale the boot rack was specified as a fitted extra, along with a intermittent wiper control box (looks like a little CB radio! , rear parcel shelf speakers (I have it on good authority that these were considered "Pimp" back in `81 and were a symbol of £££ ). Stuffed in the boot between the inner and outer back wing were a pait of old Oily Grandad type Y-Front pants ;D that must have been brought out for dipstick wiping duty every so often. The car also has the period style "Remember, Clunk Click every trip" sticker on the dash - very Retro! Anyway, enough of the waffling. I hope you like!

Hi, Welcome, what a find, good to know theres interest in obscure booted old cars, rather than a minter slowly die over a couple of years.
|
|
it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

That looks spectacular, always preferred the booted versions of old Golfs and Polos, they look better with square headlights. Yours looks absolutely mint and you obviously take a pride in it. However I must say that wicker attache case radiogram cosy or whatever the hell it is must be the most deeply unstylish piece of equipment the world has ever seen. It has already attained legendary status as far as I`m concerned and I don't even know you. What engine is it by the way? The "s" suggests 1.3+ and if this is the case its probably quite nippy, no?

That looks spectacular, always preferred the booted versions of old Golfs.... If you want a good windup, go on golfgti.co.uk and tell them a Jetta is a booted Golf, then sit back and wait for about 50 anal retentive, snot-nosed replies about all the 'facts' that seperate the Golf and Jetta, and that in no circumstances can a Jetta be refered to as a 'Golf with a boot!' Bunch of muppets!

That sound like a bit of fun Mr. Deluxe, I`ll give that a whirl. Wonder why they are so keen to differentiate, if VW had just slapped a Golf badge on the back, which they could have done, there`d be nothing they could say...Trying to imagine the owner of a Cavalier hatch denying the existence of the 4-door ones....

Fortunatley it is only the 1043 engine. Good on fuel, damn quiet and ultra reliable... The Whicker basket contains a complete plastic Picnic set, that the Mrs bought from Matalan for £4.50! We attend quiet a few shows and usually pitch a tent so its not just to look Unstylish its also there for a practical purpose! ;D

Wow that ones got a wicker attache case on it as well. Both these Derbys are absolutely gorgeous - seeing them teamed up with this ludicrous wickerwork sort of reminds of the opening credits of The Sweeney - ace Mk1 Granada coming towards you then in the next shot those bezerk looking shoes on the pedals. Is this another one of those things I am totally unaware of due to there being no retro car scene whatsoever where I live?

Sweeney = the best source on TV for Old Skool Fords ;D Well, I live in Barnsley - so we aren`t too far apart, and your right, there is hardly any retro car scene around here Whicker detailing in retro VW`s is a given, VW fitted Whicker parcel shelves and whicker under dash trays in their air cooled Beetles and Type 3`s e.t.c. I even made a parcel shelf out of Bamboo and Whicker for my MK1 Golf GLS - paired up with a chromed roof rack and old style leather luggage it looked cool!

I was coming down in my MK1 Jetta - i'd spent all week preparing it getting it ready but only managed as far as the M6 toll road before it all ended in a cloud of steam Ended up towing it to the services and leaving it there: Dad had to travel all the way from Blackburn to come and tow me home (thanks dad). I've got RAC cover now........
