Hi All, I've done a few jobs on the Mk2 recently so thought I'd post up some pics, some of the newer members of the site might not have seen it before and be interested? I did have a thread on here once before so you might have seen some of these pics before, probably the ones when the car was last clean! 1991 Mk2 Golf GTI 1.8 16v, 5 door, late oak green model with big bumpers and standard BBS wheels. I know everyone says big bumpers and BBS is too common but the way things are going while everyone else mods their cars if keep mine looking standard then it'll end up standing out. In any case, I am more interested in mechanical modifications. When I bought the car in 2002 (mileage 109k I think) it was already very well specced and had factory fitted PAS, electric heated mirrors, rear headrests, leather steering wheel and rarest of the rare on a RHD Mk2 - air conditioning! It already had lowered suspension with an Eibach kit being fitted. I was keen to retain all the original features and kept the car like this for a few years whilst completing the usual maintenance tasks, servicing, looking after replacing the brakes etc. I took the car to Stealth Racing and had it set up on the rolling road there where after some fine tuning it produced 148bhp and 124lbsft which made it pretty quick for a standard car but it could always do with a bit more power... more later. Unfortunately the head gasket failed at around 135,000 miles whilst visiting a friend in London, 250 miles away. The car got home ok with no damage and I undertook the repair in my garage... suppose it lasted pretty well really! All was well again but I still hankered after a little more power so investigated a 2 litre engine to swap in last August. I got hold of a low mileage Audi 6A unit from an Audi 80 Sport which would fit with some minor modifications. I fitted the engine along with a replacement lower mileage gearbox, solid front mount, all new rear mounts, belts, gaskets, clutch, water pump etc etc... I used the KR cams in the new engine to liberate a bit more power, the engine is only rated as 136bhp in an Audi I think whereas my Golf 1.8 made 139bhp albeit with less torque. Once I'd set up the timing and fuelling ok the car ran very well, if a little hot. The torque is certainly far stronger than with the old 1.8 engine and it pulls much harder than it used to, not sure on the power output not but probably more like 150 - 160bhp with equivalent torque figures.

My next modifications were concerned with the brakes, which are quite good as standard with 256mm front discs on the late 16v's but I wanted a bit extra. I sourced some Corrado VR6 carrier brackets to space the front calipers further from the hub and allow the fitment of G60/early VR6 sized discs - 280mm with the original calipers. These just squeeze behind the original alloys and along with braided hoses all round, ATE Superblue DOT 5.1 fluid and Pagid fast road pads give very good braking indeed. No pics of this modification I'm afraid. Here are some of my car at the 'Ring instead a few years ago...

8-)Car looks great mate..don't let the bullies on here pressure you into lowering it any more..I was threatened with all sorts if I didn't lower my Skoda. Now had it been a female giving me those threats I might have given in as long as they promised to carry out the threats anyway!! ;D ;)BTW..I wasn't really threatened..but I know they wanted to!

Cheers all, glad you like it. ;D Still a few bits and pieces to do but getting there. I forgot to put up pics and details of a few other little modifications, weighted gearshift, TSR metal gear linkages, Mk3 rear calipers, lay flat rear wiper etc... oh well.

A little update, I finally got round to taking the car for a rolling road setup at Stealth Racing the other week. When first put on the rollers the car was putting out a disappointing 128bhp / 127 lbsft torque as there was an intermittent problem with the ignition timing retarding itself under load. This was traced to a faulty ECU connection and sorted out, then the timing, fuelling etc was adjusted and the car was run again. After a few runs the best power achieved was 152bhp / 135lbsft with a very wide flat torque curve in comparison to the old 1.8 engine. The car is actually now producing a minimum of 115lbsft all the way from 1500rpm to around 6500rpm when torque starts to tail off, power peaks around there too - nice! Quite happy with that and it drives very well, but as always room for a little improvement, hence why I've arranged to buy a nice professionally ported and polished head. Also looking at manifolds and exhaust systems now... will this madness ever end?!? Hopefully with a bit more tinkering I'll be able to get into the 175bhp / 150lbsft with this engine, then that'll have to do, my Mk1 is supposed to be my project car after all!

Are you still using the KR cams? Would be tempted to replace them, but as you say... daily driver and all
115 lbft from 1500 RPM is impressive

cool. I like how you have concentrated on mechanics. good power output too
however, i think some nice bigger wheels would be good and some smaller bumpers (i don't like the big bumpers personally)
10 points for using it daily too! ;D

Update - new bits. I got these gauges from a company in Canada, my brother just happened to be out there on holiday and picked them up for me the other week, shipping would have been expensive! They are a kind of digital alternative to VDO gauges. I would have just stuck VDO's in but these are a bit different and fit nicely in the space for blank extra switches in the dash and save mounting round VDO's in the ashtray slot or similar. Only had the voltage one connected up during this photo, that's why the other two are reading max for now. They change from red (bad), amber (ok) to green (good) with little LEDs... very 'Knightrider'! ;D Couple of other bits I seem to have aquired lately, may have already posted pics of these before, forget now... not got round to fitting them yet. Lightened and balanced flywheel - next to a standard one for comparison: Professionally P&P'd head - shiny! I've also got a gasflowed exhaust manifold to fit with that head which was done by the same buy and port matched to the head. I'm hoping with all these bits fitted, even with standard nice idling cams I should be heading for 175bhp + on the standard injection. It's still my daily driver after all, don't want to modify it too much....

Cool - like the 'dials'
Can't wait to get my engine back (not to mention the wheels) so i can start playing with it. Really wish i'd have done the work myself now, although i'll reserve judgement until i get it back.

Looks good dude, real good I know what you mean about no lower, I've already split the G60 splitter on mine and I've only had it 4 days!

Sweet. GVK and Tubthumped at the Ring too, I see, before he stripped HXXXLET and went on to making records or something.
The best bit is the 5 door. I think they look great. You could add a towbar. or G60 steels?
My 2 litre TSR engined Mk2 had a towbar to go with the "Driver" badge

Thanks for the comments. I have thought about a set of G60 steel wheels, I'm always on the lookout for a set secondhand. I know you can buy them new but the prices at the dealer seem to vary quite a lot and to be honest I wouldn't want to spend more than about £100 for a set as I'm tight and as I see it they won't make the car go any faster so aren't worth too much money! Prophet - get used to hitting the splitter on kerbs and bumps, mine gets a regular bending when parking... never managed to snap it off yet though! ;D
