The plan currently is to build to tarmac spec - The strut tops are already double skinned and i plan to stitch the bottoms of the towers into the inner wings in due course too.

update incoming! First job this weekend was to blank off the old heater cutout, so a suitable place was made from 1mm steel and welded in Much grinding ensued but it's blended in perfect and undetectable after a coat of high build primer Next thing is to get the strut tower gussets in and finished, as an attempt to to get the engine bay finished. I used a profilmeister to get the shape off the uprights and then spent a while fettling the parts to suit, will weld the first one in properly tomorrow I've also stuck in a trial gusset between the chassis leg and bulkhead, i've had some proper ones of these with a swaged hole made so these will go in tomorrow too

I bought a second hand PPP subframe from one of the owners clubs forums. For those of you who aren't familiar with these, they stiffen up the notoriously flexible front end of the polo, remove the anti roll bar and allow you to run tension struts effectively giving you a wishbone conversion too. On top of this i also bought some in-situ adjustable TCAs from the same guy, the only prob being the TCAs use a half inch rose joint where as the chassis and subframe actually use an M10 bolt. So a quick measure up, and a drawing in CAD for some top hats that sleeve the rose joint to M10 and also space the rose joint centrally in the mount A visit to a friend with a lathe with some T6 bar stock yielded these Problem solved The subframe i have will need some extensive modification to clear the exhaust manifold i'll be using on the 16v lump, so once the last 3 engine bay gussets are in, i'll test fit the engine to see how much clearance is needed

Coming on well. I haven't seen it around for years, often wonder what happened to it Ha I did wonder if you'd see this! I stored it in 2010? When I went down south to do a Masters, I vowed I would rebuild it in the way I'd always planned so this is it in execution in a lot of ways

I had planned to scratch build a lot of this stuff, but the critical factor is time actually in the garage, so buying existing stuff and adapting is a definite shortcut of R&D. I do really intend to re-think a few bits of the bolt on stuff once it's rolling again as there's a few aspects that are functionally ok but could be better executed. Some aspects of the subframe design are really compromised

Not "off the shelf", It's pretty common to not run an ARB on the front of a Polo at all though. I am planning to modify the subframe as it doesn't clear the S1600 exhaust manifold first and foremost, but an anti roll bar might come as part of that but i want to get the shell done and some miles on it first and develop from there

A brief update of current progress on the car: I have booked the car in for a 2019 MSA spec weld in cage at protection and performance. This is the kind of thing i'm going for but the A pillar braces will be revised to keep them in the same plane as the A pillar, rather than a straight tube. The shell is currently sat back on it's suspension waiting to go there in a few weeks time. In the mean time i've managed to get some work done on the engine, i looked at converting it to "coil on plug" but the coil pack on #1 clashes on the oil filler tube. Next job was to swap the inlet manifold. The previous MTS motorsport one i had was heavily ported and this didn't really work with what i had planned. Eventually, a NOS one turned up on eBay saving me buying one from Germany. I've now fitted the new injectors, machined the spacers to suit the fuel rail, shortened the fuel rail to suit and put the right bolts in all of that. I'll post another update when the Shell makes it's trip to P&P the first weekend in May

Saturday saw some more progress. I spent some time the week before re-doing some repairs on the bulkhead which was a real pain. The good news is the car is now up at Protection and Performance having the new cage designed and fitted for it

I've now got the car back from PPCages and they've done a great job on a multi point weld-in cage that meets the latest 2019 MSA regulations. It's got the additional PIT bars, single roof diagonal, and strut top extensions. the eagle eyed among you will spot the prototype harness bar, i've not fitted this permanently as i need my seat to make sure my harnesses are at the right angle. I need to put some seat rails in next and then the pedal box plinth and then probably some Yoga lessons to ease getting out

Before PPP even existed. They were originally made by a chap called John in Norfolk. I had to trailer my G40 up to him so he could design it directly around my car. The guys at PPP saw it at The Polo Show the following year and asked for Johns details. My claim to fame haha.

This was my G40 and this was The Polo Show where I showed off my subframe Oh really that's cool, I bought the PPP one second hand as a temporary solution as it doesn't really work with the 16v engine and S1600 exhaust manifold I'm using so I'm about to chop most of the front off it and modify quite a bit of it!

Next steps over the weekend were to start mocking up the Group F arch kit from Haug Motorsport. The kit consists of 8 parts, 4 arches and then for additional spats to blend the arch into the wrap around bumper on the 2F. I removed the rear bumper, removed the old G40 arches and re-fitted the bumper and set to trying to find a datum and tape the arch on in place I'm going to double check the position and make sure they're the same side to side, and then mark up the rear quarters where they need cutting and subsequently Tub the arch to suit. In order to do the fronts i had to re-build most of the front of the car, which meant front panel back on, bumper bar back on, wings on etc. I didn't quite have time to fully mock the fronts up as i needed to go and pickup my front bumper from storage but the fronts look much easier than the rears. I chucked the GRP bonnet on mocked up the lamp pod ....well, just because really

I too am having to make some cage updates. My car has been doing events for the best part of 20 years, but they've now decided that it's FIA cage needs new mounts. Joy...

It's worth checking again as they recently revoked the rule changes if your car is pre-2005 re PIT bars being required. Unfortunately too late for me as i've already spent the cash so i'll just carry on as it was.
