After asking about bike brake cables on the main board I went to Halfords in the week and picked one up. While tinkering in the nice weather today I made an aluminium ferrule that bolts to the bulkhead then sorted out the right length. I chopped the outer and inner to suit and made a brass ferrule for the carb linkage end. Result is one super smooth throttle pedal. Going to be much easier to make smooth progress again. Also fitted a set of new NGK plugs and a slim stainless clamp on one of the exhaust joins. And finally got the second of the bucket seats in too. I do like this brighter weather that makes little jobs like this a pleasure to do.

Rather embarrassingly the MOT man found the drivers side inner rear arch was a bit crispy but passed the car on the basis of it not being near enough to a "prescirbed area" I didn't want to leave it too long before sorting it though and had a day in the dungeon today to get it done. Wasn't expecting it to be quite this crispy when I removed the interior vinyl The flanged join was actually solid so I think it was caused by the original underseal cracking and holding moisture against the panel. All the rotten areas chopped out and the outer section done. Here's how I made the bits. This is the second larger piece. Shape roughly cut out and flange folded up. I hammered the outer edge of the flange to stretch it and get it to bend. So I ended up with this. I could then scribe it from below to cut it to the right shape for a butt weld. Drilled the flange for plug welds and tacked in place. Fully welded and the flange top knocked over as originally done. And from underneath Welds on the inside were ground back but I didn't take any photos of that. So another bit tackled. That's the last bit of bodywork for the time being. I'll probably end up doing some more next winter...

Seth I applaud your perspicacity, and several other big words. Honestly - your level of perseverance with all the trials this car has displayed deserves some recognition - and then to repower it into the bargain - respect.! Trust the pleasure it gives you is commensurate with the effort you have expended. Wow. That was big...

Thanks guys. To be honest I didn't really want to have the car back in daily, use until I'd done that bit but now its done I feel I can get on with bits and pieces on the other cars again. Chamba, seriously, that wasn't really difficult. Only a matter of aiming the hammer along the edge of that fold to get it to bend. Probably took about 10 minutes of hammering, going up and down along the piece. Then once you can scribe a line its just a matter of cutting it to that mark and repetitively offering it up to make sure you don't end up with it too small. Kilroy. Deep! And I had to use my dictionary! The thing is this is Mrs_Seth's first car so we can't really bin it. Just keep on fixing/making it better as and when. She's rather enjoying the new performance.

Seth, you have a PM... This has pricked my interest as the Ital will need a new 'box and a lot of 1.3 Marinas were 'converted' with Mazda engines and 'boxes back in the day (and were nicknamed 'Mazdarina's).... Hmmm, 16V and 5-speeds.....

Ah, Marinanut! I don't think I ever got back to you. I'm slapping my own wrists. Will try and sort some dimensions out for you. No massive news really. I finally changed the oil and filter a couple of weeks ago. I also noticed a month or so back that the headlights were somewhat past their best. They were genuine Lucas halogen ones I fitted probably 10 years ago but the reflectors had become badly corroded. Urgh! So a couple of nights ago I pulled the lenses out of the MX5 which I'm still stripping as I had read they were the same dimensions as the old Lucas 72 lights. 'Tis true! Here's one fitted. Flatter glass but other than that perfect. New one on the right of the photo old one on the left. This should make a difference at night Hope you're enjoying the engine swap articles in Retro Cars. Third part should be out next week I think.

Yay! A feature! I might have written it myself but it was cool to have some proper photos taken and I've never had a car individually featured in a mag before. Jan issue of R-C.

Yeah, I've heard that before Mk1PI but I reckon the steel this car was made from was good too to survive as well as it has with our abuse. So, the magazine articles are all done now. There's a whole bunch of details I could probably add here and may do in dribs and drabs if people are interested. But firstly there's this which I have to thank PaulH for, for his artistic help. When I changed the cam belt I just about managed to get the cam cover on my mill. curse word. Mazda were pretty stingy with the wall thickness. A bit of JB weld and an aluminium sheet cut to fit the recess sorted that. A brainstorming session with Paul at the Ace and we came up with some wording for new pseudo period conversion plates. Paul went away and did the necessary clever computer designing bit. And eventually I found somewhere to make me some foil heatproof stickers. Size was spot on to fit int the recesses. The K&N ones were to go on the filters and are I believe their first logo used through the seventies and found on an early Tamiya RC car sticker sheet. Classic Capsule re-did the art for them from a pretty low res scan I found.

Loving the sticker details! I can't believe how period the Mazda's cam covers look, and the lights being the same dimensions is just perfect.
The ferrule on the throttle cable is very elegant. My solution was rather more crude, using a length of plastic pipe and a apit of jube clips. It's nice to have a smooth throttle operation though!
