Bloody hell fella, you're not having any luck with her. Any idea why it's still going into limp mode? there are a couple of things that i have to check; i have to check the oxygen sensor, though i swapped it, but the symptoms are similar. I have checked a couple of forums and obviously a lot of people had the same problem after changing the gaskets ... the problem also points to that valve clearance again; my mate is checking this this week, maybe he has more luck/patience than i have . Meanwhile i just put it out of the workshop, because i have to do some things to the Passat (exhaust ist loud, steering links are worn out etc...) .... and even if i can afford an unreliable bus, i need a reliable daily driver .... and that's the Passat ....

Trusty ol Passat. ;D
Hopefully adjusting the valves may help resolve the problem, fingers crossed.

Trusty ol Passat. ;D Hopefully adjusting the valves may help resolve the problem, fingers crossed. well, i was really down yesterday; we adjusted the valves again, my mate did it, so i couldn't make a mistake... after that it didn't start anymore I was really starting to lose my patience... i spent a lot of time and that thing doesn't even start so today i ignored the bus, pushed it out of the workshop (it still wouldn't start), spent the day cleaning up the workshop, repairing my mates W124 and start to work on another mates Typ 25 (gearbox and welding) .... before i called it a day, i was thinking about the bus again. No matter how wrong i adjusted the valves, it would always start, so there was something wrong.... the instrument panel is out of order at the moment, so the fuel gauge.... hmmm, i put fuel in a couple of days ago, but i also drove a while with it, could it be ... ? So i drove quickly to the petrol station and bought 5l of liquid gold and she runs.... ;D Stupid me, she is running now, but still in limp mode.... she is very good on performance, but getting the emission test in limp mode is impossible, so i still have to figure out, what is the problem. But at least i don't have to push her in the workshop, i can drive now....

Lack of fuel has caught m out in the past.......& probably will do again. At least you haven't got to pish her anymore which is a step in the right direction, did you valve adjusting mate have any ideas about the problem?

At least you haven't got to pish her anymore which is a step in the right direction, did you valve adjusting mate have any ideas about the problem? no, he is rather an aircooled specialist and things like electronic engine management comes directly out of hell for him .... the symptoms are the same for a faulty coolant temp sensor, though i changed this a while ago.... i still have a nos one in stock, i will try that .... it is just strange, that this fault came up after changing the gaskets, it would be very random, if that went wrong at the same time ...

Admittedly I'm an aircooled fella and most electrical things beyond a bug leave me confused. Like you say it would be coincidental that a sensor failed whilst doing the head gaskets.

well, i left the van for a couple of weeks because i was fed up and had a lot of other things to do; becoming a father doesn't help much in the workshop, either ;D I had a couple of cars from friends in the workshop , that had to be fixed, so that's what i did to get some space... meanwhile i sourced an original VAG manual for these engines and started measuring some things. In the air flow meter there is another temperature sender, which seems to be the fault. It has 8 Kilo Ohms instead of 2,5 , that makes sense then.I also adjusted the throttle switch, which was also far away from being adjusted correctly. The sensor is not available as a replacement, the whole air flow meter has to be replaced; i have ordered a secondhand one from a friend, that should be there on tuesday. If that works then, i can go to the MOT (TÜV) station, the inspection is due since march ;D

I can use the time when the boy is very small, i can get away for a couple of hours into the workshop. Time will be limited in the future... though i hope i can point him in the right direction; i failed when he wants to become a ballet dancer ;D

one more try on the Bus to find the missing power.... i did suspect an air leak, but couldn't find anything, so i took out the inlet manifold again and checked some things ; and voila, found two faults : cleaned the throttle body, and obviously the gasket is in a strange shape ... when you tighten the TB, the gasket gets into the way a bit... the relais for the fuel pump is faulty, too, sometimes working, sometimes not. Both parts, the gasket and the relais are no longer available, but the VW classic parts center still have them in stock; so i ordered them... next to the relais you can see a rubber part, that should seal a not used flange, this is also broken, and that might be the main issue, as air is leaking in there .... i also took out the valve train and the hydraulic lifters, as i also suspect a failure here; the lifters can be taken apart, flushed and refilled and should be ok then .... we also relocated the lift (again), now i can park another normal sized car in front. It is very close now, so the transporter has to go backwards on the lift ... but it fits ;D

ooooooooo thats close, ill bet that was bit scary first time you lifted it!!! well, we measured it out before moving the lift... ;D It now has to go backwards on the lift because of the tow bar, also you couldn't open the trunk lid... but that's ok...

well, last week the parts arrived; i cured the fuel pump relais problem, pump is now always running when you turn on the ignition, solved... as you saw in the previous post, i took off the valve train a g a i n to find a problem, tbh everything was as it should be, killed one gasket for the rocker tubes and had to wait until they arrived here. Then adjusting the valve clearance again, tried to start the engine - fail. Sounded like zero compression , so i thought maybe the pushrods were not fitted properly on the left cylinder bank, took them out, everything was fine, but the exhaust valve on cylinder three was very very strange ... obviously someone changed the rocker arm in the past, it looked totally different, but the measurements seemed right ... Then i walked away from that thing, as i really started to get fed up ... today then, after having a couple of days not to work at the van, i had an idea.... we started the engine , it was running really rough, i removed the ignition leads from each cylinder while the engine was running, and though i suspected the 3rd cylinder, it was actually both cylinders on the right bank, which were not working properly... so off with the valve cover, decrease the valve clearance on those two cylinders, and here is the result : Type 25 vs workshop floor = 1:0 ;D we did a test drive, though it rattled like hell as the hydraulic lifters have to bleed themselves, it really went well .... leaving the workshop left us with a huge cloud of smoke, i think that's a lot of unburnt fuel, but it is really very quick.... so tomorrow i'll check the compression, decrease maybe the clearance on the left cylinders, have some new oil and then it should be fine .... couple of other small things to do yet, but if everything is going well, i'll go to TÜV this week....

today i drove to the TÜV test station to finally get my test done (it is due since march :-) ) ... well, it failed, but on two small things i haven't seen when i checked her before; the bushings for the steering rack and a lower ball joint on the front suspension. The ball joint is ok, but they test it with a machine and obviously then they see that it is worn out . Anyway, i ordered the parts, fit them next week and have the re-test again ...emissions were ok, that shows me, that the engine setup is fine now, the TÜV tester is also a type 25 owner and we were chatting half an hour; he'll bring his engine in winter and we will overhaul it :-) I really had a couple of things on my mind where it could fail (e.g the pop up roof is not in the papers of the car...) , so i am really pleased about the result. I wanted to refurbish the front suspension anyway....

You are lucky to get away with the roof. yeah, and i will be lucky, when i get the roof away :-) well, the roof is not mentioned in the papers, but i have a huge WESTFALIA sticker on the roof, so most people think it is a factory conversion .... i might be getting a roof skin in november, and i will be really happy to remove that thing and make a proper transporter out of it . I am already doing some sketches about a new interior and some fresh paint, the transporter will make a nice transformation over the winter . I will also take off the seasonal plates , currently it is registered from april to october, i will change it to 12 months soon after i got TÜV (you can only register/change the registering date with a valid TÜV...)... so here is the offending part : the bushes are under the bolts : and i think it is not too soon to change them : it wouldn't have been necessary to remove the steering rack, but it makes it a bit easier .... now you see the underseal/wax/dirt from the last 22 years, and as i know those guys from the TÜV station i thought i'll make them very happy : i just wire brushed the rack and fitted new gaiters , too . It wouldn't have been necessary, but when they see it is proper done and someone spent more time on that than the usual mechanic, they make life a lot easier in future tests, because they now i am doing it properly ... some fresh paint and some stainless steel clamps ... anjd they might need sunglasses.... monday morning the courier will turn up and bring the bushes and the ball joints, and by noon she will be re-tested ....
