Yup another one  This one I got in Feb this year, cheap (as in the bloke never cashed the cheque :  ) with "a blown head gasket". Not the best colour, but almost rock solid bodywise:   A full turbo interior (including boost gauge!) and turbo alloys were a bonus. It did indeed have a blown headgasket. And this:  Whoops! Ah well, that engine went in the skip. Shot bearings, crank, pistons and head. I kept a few bits off it though - enough to take a 1992 16v injection engine and turn it into a single carb 8v engine. I love Saab interchangibility ;D   While I was at it, I swapped the 4 speed box for a 5 speed, which leaves me with an almost mint spare for teh turbo but with "economy" gearing - good for 130mph instead of the 113 I managed at Brunters. The car got its MOT yesterday and is on the road from Monday - which leaves the turbo free for some much needed TLC! I did consider turning this one into a 16v car, but it's only a runabout, so couldn't be bothered with the extra hassle! |

I do believe the brochure describes it as "baby-poo brown" and has the mixing code "UGH01"  It's actually a little lighter than the pics as they were taken when it had just arrived and it was gettting dark. |

A bit of an update. I did 1200 miles in the thing in a month (which is a lot of miles for me!). The gearlinkage needs work as it's a pig to get into 5th and the waterpump bearing is letting go (teach me for reusing the old one!). Apart from that and the hideous fuel consumption it's a nice comfy runabout.
I'm glad I've got my trackday wheels on though as the tyres are slightly undersize - so the speedo overreads. I'd forgotten that and was blasting along the M20 (?) on the way to Kent Cams (see the 99T thread...) and didn't spot the specs in the roadworks. Oops! More than 14 days ago now though, so I think I got away with it!

Another update  Just a few miles shy of 172,000 miles and I'm noticing a few small rust blisters  Time to get some touch-up paint! The car's in damn good nick considering. A credit to some of the previous owners. I gave Blu'y a wash and polish last Saturday as I was driving up to Coventry for a bit of a meet. One of the previous owners was coming, so thought it best to be shiny!   Not a bad turnout for the older models, a Sonett; 2 96's; a 90 and SIX 99's   More pics here: www.saabcentral.com/phpgallery/Coventry-2006Next job is to pop the engine out again to replace the timing chain, guides etc. and replace all the alternator mounting bushes. |

I quite like the colour!
Not sure I could cope with those red seats, but the beige/pooh colour gives it a nice understated look. Nice wheels too. Keep it up.

Love the car, i used to have a 73 model 99 ( a long time ago). It was rusty but as it was a Saab the rust was solid.......
I happen to like the interior, i always found my car very, very comfortable, it had that air of quality that all my mates couldnt match in their scorts and tinas.
I sold it to the son of a neighbour and a matter of weeks later the gearbox decided to go south in a big way.
Is it true that the gearbox is a weak link on these cars?

So what to do with a car with 177,000 miles on it? Drive it to Aberdeen and back in a weekend! 1,119 mile round trip, sitting at 75-90 the whole way. Got 33.6mpg average, and never missed a beat Still, buying 33 gallons of petrol in three days is rather depressing! |
