;D Thats my son - he loves Dale's car but loves my Jetta more New plug leads being sent back to have new dizzy ends fitted: Decided to relocate the fuel filter to make more room for the BMC. Decided to put it on the other side of the scuttle which involved redoing the fuel lines: Rocker cover gasket, plugs n dizzy cap n rotar fitted. Head looks in good condition, with the only wear evident on number 1 lobe: As I had the drill out, I fitted the extinguisher I had waiting: Also stuck a few stickers on. Pics soon.

Windscreen seal arrived this morning together with the correct washer bottle. Might be watertight by the weekend! Here's a pic of yesterdays Blue Peter moment: And these also arrived at last: Sexual, like a lady :lol:

No, but i've got a mate who's a master technician for VW and know a lad who works in the parts department! I'd do a better job than their parts department though........you have no idea what a pain this car is proving to be when it comes to getting parts, with the engine being a mixture of late MK2 GTi (bottom end) and US spec crossflow MK3 2.0l GTi (head) and god knows what else thrown into the mix.
The Gaz's are for the silver one but soo tempted to put them on the blue one for a while although i'd not want to get them dirty!!!
Ooh Chapel, ur from the States. Been trying to get some bits from over the pond but its been proving difficult, such as the US spec headlight and grill setup. I thought they were more common than the Golf over there?

Rear should be nice and hard: And there's the possibility of going quite low (remember, the Eibach/Koni setup is 40mm lower than standard: Unfortunately I couldn't fit them as the bore of the original sleeve that sits on top of the spring cap is bigger than the new shocks, so there would be too much play at the top: Gaz are gonna make me some new ones with the correct bore for the piston and correct outer diameter for the top mounts/bushes. They're also gonna make me some inserts so I can fit my TAS top mounts as I need four and the two that i've got have a bore that is too small: Suspension should go on then........thats once i've sorted the N/S rear bottom shock mount. The bolt for the shocker was stuck solid and after an hours worth of messing it refused to budge, so dad cut the bolt so I could get the shock out, unfortunately he also cut the bottom mount slightly, and its a bit on the bent side now so that needs sorting too...... We also tried, and failed, to fit the windscreen so gave up and that should be fitted properly by someone used to doing it everyday on monday. Can you see a pattern appearing..... Whilst messing under the car i took a closer look at the rear arches....which were starting to rust already. This wasn't helped by the way in which the plastic arches had been trimmed and bonded on creating some lovely dirt and water traps, so took and angle grinder to them both and cut them right back, removed loads of sealer, wire brushed the rust back and rust proofed it ready for painting again properly: And as it stands now: I've ordered a pair of MK3 calipers from GSF as that will be everything replaced and theoretically the brakes should be fine and not need any more attention....famous last words. I'm going back to work next week, ill and vomiting or not, as this week has been more stressful messing with bloody cars than if i'd been at work!

Right, i'm losing the will to live. Spent 3 hours led under the bloody thing welding up the rear bottom shock mount after umming and ahhing if i should just swap the whole axle over. Its pretty solid now but i might still weld a washer onto it to make sure its 100%. I had planned on fitting the new rear brakes, but that didn't happen as it was 9.30 by the time i'd finished and cleaned up. Also removed the stub axles and brake backing plates which won't be replaced. Damaged mount: Dad making it look hard: After i'd had a go for the first time: And after a little grind with the angle grinder and file: On the plus side I used the Arc welder for the first time as the Mig had run out of gas, and after watching dad make it look hard it's surprisingly easy to use. At least the screen was refitted yesterday: And the bits i'm waiting for from Gaz: Proper fed up as all i seem to be doing is going backwards.

Pics to update progress from earlier in the week - nearly completed: Hopefully finished on monday. Yesterday was mostly spent doing this: The van failed its MoT on friday.......brake lights wern't working, so adjusted the switch and now they work fine so thats a pass! Unfortunately yesterday it started to missfire badly and was struggling to tow the trailer and car back so need to get that sorted this week otherwise i'm in trouble for Cadwell...... Tha saga continues!

The golf is awesome! Turned out very nice. Will there be on-board vids from Cadwell? It'll look better once it's built up and detailed. No onboard vids, so depends if someone gets me on their's. Picked the bushes for the front up this morning, much better than before: Van went to the garage to be checked tomorrow, GSF swapped some cash for some handbrake cables and some spare plug leads were also acquired. Made up and fitted some new rear brake lines: Thats the rear sorted now. Suspension raised a bit, and with the help of Dale brakes bled and new early MK2 GTi handbrake cables fitted and adjusted after the tubes that go through the floorpan had been trimmed back to give more adjustment/length. NS rear arch was bonded back on again and both sides were sealed properly underneath, before the whole lot was painted with underseal: Definately water tight now. Even got a flush of motivation to reseal the drivers door and refit the door card: I'll find the bits of trim eventually..... Tomorrow dads gonna have another go at the engine, and if i get home early enough I might bleed the front brakes and if its working take it to the local meet.

Doesn't look like it'll be making Cadwell as still won't start and running out of time. Couple more things to try today (dads messing this morning before he goes to work and i'll have a play when i get home from work) and then its white towel time.
At least i'll be able to take my time and get everything done, get suspension aligned and car rolling roaded before the next track day without the pressure. Van's also foobarred as it looks like its burned a valve so needs engine doing - its in the garage at the mo but doubt it'll be ready for friday.
Oh well, i tried!
Anyone wanna buy a ticket for a track day at Cadwell........

Well, spoke to Jordy of extremely fast MK1 Scirocco fame and he hopes to have the van ready for tomorrow afternoon. He was busy relapping the valves and had all the parts to rebuild it, so looks like the van will be ready.

Will the Jetta be though......... I just scored through the last few posts, the amount of work you've been doing the last few weeks, that car owes it to you to be at the trackday! All the best with getting it going! Nah, its not gonna be ready. Replaced the coil and ECU amplifier yesterday but still no joy. Borrowed another dizzy off a mate to try and pulled a load of parts off again to make sure that the timing is correct - dads gonna check that this morning. This evening, if i've got any motivation left, might build it back up and try the other dizzy. Cylinder 1 exhaust lobe on the cam is REALLY worn for some reason (pics to come later) and it looks like its gonna need another cam so the plan is to at some point remove the head and give it a check over, replace the cam and tappets, and then stick it back together with new belt and set the timing from scratch. Either that of just set fire to the damn thing..... I think i'm gonna just cancel the whole weekend as i've already lost the £20 for the Travelodge and the £99 for the track day. Might see if some friends can sell my place for me when they go, but I might just cut my losses rather than waste more cash travelling etc. Got the van repairs to pay for next.......... At least the rush is over and i can take my time getting it right.

Van was ready in time!!! More new bits that were fitted without success: And a slighhtly worn cam!!! Still going over tonight. Taking all the tools n stuff for Sam and also got a T4 bodykit being collected while i'm there. Next time.

As i've had the day off and am waiting for Sam to arrive, might as well do something usefull, so apart from collecting, loading and cleaning the van and car i also recovered the rear shelf in the Jetta to get rid of the annoying reflection in the rear window, and also around the digifant fusebox in the glovebox: Bit of food now, and then a nice drive over to Lincoln.......

Leads have eventually arrived: So long as ur not in a rush and you don't mind if its wrong first, second and third time, get some Formula Power leads....... A couple of pics from saturday before it all went wrong: Shortly after i'd rung the RAC to come and collect me from a layby a few miles from the circuit. Time was 3.45pm: A few hours later, still waiting for the low loader: And about 9pm: It was about 1am by the time i got home. I won't be renewing my RAC membership. Hope to be looking at the electrics on the Jetta soon.

Track was ace, really good and quite demanding. Was just starting to get the lines right when the engine let go late morning....gutted!
Had another passenger ride in the mad 2.0 20v MK1 Golf on throttle bodies belonging to Ade - unbelievable cornering speed and brakeing ability - must get some pics up.
Sam, who owns the Golf, is gonna have a look at the electrics on my Jetta this week as need to suss out why its not sparking - he's good at electrics.
Having a few days off from working on the car and chilling out - not been very lucky with anything with 4 wheels recently - when Sam brought the van back on sunday morning so we could tow his car back to Blackpool to his house, the back box dropped off!!!
Jetta should be on the road again soon though, and hope to take it to Anglesey soon if i've got enough cash.
I'll get there ;D
