BYJ 235T Meet up with another Derby at the weekend... Its my friend Vic's newly restored 78 (registered early 79) Early modelled Chrome bumpered car. I've followed the progress on this Derby pretty much for as long as I've owned my car - so it was nice to see it come to fruition. The quality of the workmanship & detail is 2nd to none and is a credit to Vic who has done all the work (except final spraying) Himself... teaching himself the various skills as he progressed on the project. Anyway having taken it so far to three shows Vic has won two prizes - Best Non-Golf watercooled at BVF at Malvern and picked up Best Polo at last weekend's Polo Show - which is where these pics were taken We are both on the Mk1 Polo Club Forum

awesome cars! the one above with round likes looks awesome! I love the lights/grill theres almost old style mustang look to it in the first 2 pics! awesome! Yeah - most people prefer the earlier chrome bumpered cars & its amazing how different they look... considering the only difference is literally just the front & rear bumpers & the grille & lights - the rest of the bodywork is identical..... oh the chrome bumpered cars have a different more early Audi-esque dash board - harking back to the Mk1 Polo & Derby's heritage (being born out of the Audi50) Problem is that in the UK the chrome bumpered cars were only available from late 1977 to very early 1979 - so just over a year, mine is one of the early facelift cars. Combined with the fact that Mk1s rust like nothing else means there are very few RHD chrome bumpered cars left on our roads... off hand I can think of only four or five. The above blue car actually has a rare NOS Audi 50 grille & even rarer level adjustable Audi 50 headlamps I like both early & facelift cars - the facelift square headlamps gives the Derby an individual personality where as the earlier car shares the front look with its pre-facelift hatchback brother.

My family had a Mk1 facelift Derby for a while when I was in my teens... I sort of hated it and liked it at the same time. Now, I think that I could accept the car for what it is instead, back then, I thought that it was crappy compared to our other car, a 1975 MB 220D... Brings back memories, I like the look of the Derby. Has a very Audi 80ish feeling, it's almost strange that Audi never had a saloon model, considering the fact that Audi 80 was the saloon while Passat was the hatch...

Cheers guys bbracer16v - I think I outlined my basic plans further back in this thread? But the general jist of my plans for the Derby are; - Pep-up the performance with some mild engine tuning + addition of a 5 speed box (these things are so low geared!) - Freshen up the bodywork, with a full blow-over re-spray - Get the seats re-covered Generally I love the way it looks at the moment - its just a case of neatening it all up abit
