Looks like the old golfie is getting the chop and we are looking for a new daily non retro car.
Me and Mrs ZS fancy an estate this time, but it must have plenty of go, well more than the golf (1.8T Gti) anyway.
Shortlist so far:
Saab 9-5 2.3 HOT Passat VR6 4motion (or a W8 - wtf are THEY about!!) Golf V5 Alfa 156 sportwagon (GTA just a smidge too expensive - damn damn damn
any inspiration
(not retro as my suggestions of a Citroen CX estate or a Peugeot 504 were knocked right back). Also Volvo's are too big. Saabs top of the list the mo, but just edging the bigest that Mrs ZS wouold go for
over to you boys...

I'd go for the Saab. I'd also don my best black-rimmed "alternative" specs, get myself a nice black polar-neck and talk loudly about "design in terms of light and space" etc.... Alternatively.... buy a four-year old Vectra diseasel and spend the money you save on the ZS. It'll be so dull you'll love the ZS even more too! ;D

How about an Audi A4? They're really solid cars and really nice to drive! Also they depreciate slowly which is always good. BMW 3-series touring - I've always thought they make the best looking estates around. I especially like the e30 touring but I suppose that doesn't meet your criterion for "new" . The Merc estates I've always thought are a bit lardy. The C-class seems slimmer but the E is too tubby for my liking. Jeez, all this positive talk about new cars has made me feel funny! I'm going for a lie down ;D

What about Skoda Octavia vRS Estate?
1.8 Turbo...16" Alloys...lowered suspension...0-60 in about 8 secs and a top speed of 145mph.
Loads of boot space...better than VW/Audi build quality and quite reasonable purchase price. Would certainly recommend one

Either a volvo V70, they are absoloutely great, we have a2.5se, most comfortable car ever. Pretty good on fuel too.
Or an MG ZT Touring. The v8, I've driven the saloon 260 v8, loads of character for a modern car IMO! Shifts too.

Audi RS4 Estate... same price as a new half-decent estate (£20k trade, £25k private low-mileage) yet... well a picture says a thousand words: 380bhp, 6 speed box, 2.7 BiTurbo V6.

Had a XM a while back. Loved it to bits but Mrs ZS hated it (waaaay to big). Ditto Volvo T5 (damn damn damn again).
Hadn't thought about the skoda, good call! Might have trouble with convincing Mrs Z about the image though. She's keen on the saab.
Audi A4 - duuuuuull, fast ones too expensive still, £16K looks like the ceiling on this (17K gets a 156 GTA est, so a bit of haggling may be needed, 265 BHP, drop dead looks!
Bimmers, fast ones too exp unless too old. Slower ones too dull. Haven't looked at mercs, do they do any fast ones?
MG Z Touring V8 ( ;D) Will have a look
Keep em coming

Well if we're going for daft ways to divest our friends of £16k, may I suggest this:

What about the Jaguar X Type estate - I saw one recently and thought it looked cool - but I suspect you have really already decided on the Saab - which is a fine choice too. I agree that the Audi is very dull. You should look at the French estates as well X5. Laguna, Peugeot 407 etc - these really look well if you don't want to go for a premium brand

Well, I'll concede that the Audi is a bit dull, but then so are 95% of modern boxes . The RS4 could never be described as dull though. That car is fantastico! (for a modern). Soooo much power and feels so positive and sure-footed. Great drive. Jag X-Type - just a Ford Mundano in a posh frock. Sit in one and you'll thing someone's let off a beige paint bomb inside a V6 Mondeo. OK engine though. I like the Skoda idea! Surely by now the image shouldn't be a problem?

i do like the vRS estates... i was severly temped by one a couple of years ago, they're crazy cheap for the performance levels. and if anyone mocks you for driving a skoda, poke their eyes out with some rolled-up spare £50 notes that you saved by not buying a 'posh' car jag x-type... nope. or if you have to, make sure it's a 4x4 - the two-wheel-drive ones are like driving a not-quite-set angel delight.

I like the Skoda a lot. Mrs Z is not so sure (she's South African and has some odd ideas about the image of things, for example all Fords are dutchmans cars!). She did mention the Jag X-type. They look nice but htey ARE Mondeo's. The Saab is in top spot at the mo. I like the overboost thingy on the HOT versions. 20BHP extra just when you need it! I'm going to cry down the phone at the local alfa dealer to see if any money might come off a GTA estate 156 sportwagon, they look toooo cool and are hugely powerfull. Sadly Mrs Z hate scoobies too as there are a couple of nice estates in the local shed!! Still its fun doing this and discovering just how dull most modern cars are! It shouldn't be this hard to find some stylish fun!

So enough speed and manouverability, enough space, but not too much size? 998-powered Hillman Husky with a roofrack?! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Don't go near Vauxhalls whatever you do (no offence to Vauxhall owners, but their current and very recent estates and MPVs have not been great cars, even if their seating arrangements are clever and a bit practical, that doesn't make up for atrocious reliability, which I've seen first hand from current Vauxhalls quite a lot lately, a lot less reliable than previous Vauxhalls) Surely if rear drive Volvos are out, then the Audi S4 would be too, it can't be much smaller. Believe me, 2, 7 and 9 series Volvos look collosal but their not that hard to live with and they're about as safe and practical as you can get, plus get a 4 cylinder turbo or 9 cylinder and you'll have a pretty understated, but really quite rapid car, and you can get a mid 90s 960 3 litre with much more than 200,000 miles left in it for sure before it needs any work, go for a later one and you can get a quite modern looking car, and one in immaculate condition since 960s were definately comfortable, leather and wood sort of cruisers rather than workhorses like 240s etc, and all for less than £3,000 out of the Auto Trader or on ebay. If you want more modern stuff, then I'd go for the Skoda Octavia, surely the Skoda image isn't percieved as being too bad these days is it? It's subtle and understated as a car, yes, but isn't that a good thing? I mean, I don't know if it's better where you live but round here a car like a Passat 4Motion or Alfa 156 is asking to be keyed all over, have it's stereo and/or wheels nicked in the supermarket car park, and cost the earth to insure, whearas the Octavia is a good car that doesn't get a great deal of undesirable attention.
