As title. Need to haul the viva's ass down from Potters Bar (herts) to my new house in Bournemouth, where there is a nice drive/garage waiting for it. It's in towable condition (or will be if needs be) but that causes a whole lot of PITA about motorway use or lack thereof. So is there anyone with a trailer and a willingness to earn some beer tokens?
Even a car with a towing hook'll do as I am more than happy to rent a trailer.
Thanks for any offers doods, the future of this awesome project depends on it.
;D

Bit far for me otherwise I`d happily do it. I`m not 100% on the law regarding towing but I believe as long as the car is MOT`d and possibly taxed you can tow it, otherwise at least two wheels need to be off the ground. You certainly can NOT tow with a rope on a motorway but you can buy a straight (rigid) bar from machine Mart for about £20 and you don`t need a tow bar as it clips to the towing eyes on both vehicles. I`ve got one of these bars and if there`s some way of you collecting it or possibly meeting me somewhere within reasonable distance(I`m in Cheshire) you`re more than welcome to borrow it. I might be heading to Birmingham next saturday in my recovery truck so could possibly bring the towing bar there if it helped? Reanimation has my e-mail address should you wish to get in touch with me.

S'ok I've got a rigid bar - just hunting to see if someone has some 'proper' trasport on their car, or a towing hook.
Either way thanks a bunch for the offer!

No problem and in the unlikely event that my poorly BX estate (not running well) or my V*lksw*g*n Sharan has stopped leaking enough water to flood the Sahara desert are fixed up by the time you need to move it I`ll let you know and hopefully we can arrange something.

Well even a bugger off or a 'no' would have been nice or a ballpark figure.
Spose that's too much to think of?

Tigran you can reckon on a quid a mile one-way to get stuff shifted from A to B, thats a decent 'rule of thumb' I find.

Yup, as above! You wont find anyone willing to transport 200 miles for under a £100, and they'd have to be good mates with you!!
I also guess you wont be needing the space in my garage now? Seeing as you said there's a driveway/garage at your new house!?!

I wont go near the M25 for £1.00 per mile, you can lose days on there. As our good friend said it was not £30 total it was £30+ fuel even so I would be a fool not to put a whole day by as at least half of the miles are on the M25. To be honest the reson I did not reply was I though "he's havin a laf"

I reckon these guys who do £1 a mile must be cutting themselves pretty fine at the end of the day, so even at that rate its a good deal

yeah defo you can't grumble at that.
I have had good results from a chap called 'preeciceautos' on ebay, he's about a quid a mile and very efficient! No messing!

I was trying to do the sums the other day.... To get anywhere at a decent speed, you really need a decent recovery truck. Now a S/H Sprinter is about £6k, and that will be depreciating all the while.... then you need a decent tom-tom, wireless laptop, decent phone etc.... Then there's the fuel, insurance, running costs, Ginsters allowance and so forth.... the sums don't stack up that favourably.

Yeah those that do it for a living - i can understand how fine the profit line is. I think I will ask for a bit of brass to put towards a twin axle trailer and a tow bar for christmas.

Then there's the fuel, insurance, running costs, Ginsters allowance and so forth.... the sums don't stack up that favourably. It`s a funny old game. I don`t go that far (have a 1987 Mercedes 609D, 5.9 tonner) but 120 odd mile round trips seem ok. They actually won`t depreciate too much because people will pay exhorbitant amounts for old trucks in any condition. I recently sold a 1988 Mk3 Transit which needed ansolutely loads of work (inc. major chassis welding) for nearly £1300. I`ve had a bloke deliver a car for me from Essex in about a 1987 Renault/Dodge 7.5 tonner that looked knackered but kept going apparantly, so maybe some people have had their trucks for years and they don`t owe them anything? I`m seriously considering quitting my job to go full time but I reckon I`ll need to spend a minimum of 10k to get the right truck which I haven`t got right now. To make it pay I think I`ll need a crew cab 7.5 tonner with slide off back and a spec lift to do two jobs at the same time. Once (if) I get enough together that`ll be a Merc Atego or Daf FA45, I`ve driven enough Ivecos in the past to put me off them for life! Incidentally a lot of the recovery lads will also have made a nice living out of scrapping cars too, you`d be amazed how quick just about any recovery truck will pay for itself
