I did, last night. www.zen16617.zen.co.uk/dave/bug/its a 1302 S semi auto I'm buying it, sorting that hammertite out and using it. Very cool, genuine mile (74k from new) and all really really good, loads of period goodies, and cobra slots, 5 of em. Think, black bonnet, and re sprayed wings, pukka.

check the semi-auto gearbox VERY carefully... drive it hot, drive it cold, drive it in traffic - they're pricey to fix cos not many people want to touch them, most problematic ones get junked in favour of a manual.
it's not even a auto anyway, it's just an automatic clutch - it's all sort of solenoids and hydraulics and stuff and works on a microswitch under the gearlever. put your hand on gearlever and clutch disengages, change gear and take hand off... great if you're not a lazy driver!
under bonnet looks ok, make sure the strut tops are as good as they look and check inner wings and heater channel ends too. no framehead to worry about but most of the under bonnet area is structural so needs to be good. from windscreen back is normal beetle so usual checks... heater channels, battery tray etc.
definately black bonnet... remember the "yellow and black racer" special edition?

hey, so we like then? I've driven the car hot and cold and done all the checks, I've been into dubs for F in ages chris, I remember when you had your old fasty, and the old days of the Total VW forum, (gonna be all confused and wonder who I am now ain't ya ) The car is proper solid, you think the bonnet has hammerite, you should see the floor, and anything else that could rot, has been plastered with the stuff. but fear not, chipping it away only shows shiny black paint, just as it left the factory. I've had it on the 4 post, and hammered all the usual areas, checked the strut tops, the spare wheel well, it really is as solid as it looks, proper good, really can't believe how good it is. infact, I'll pop to the next OK meet (if they are still going) and show any dubbers who make it, if not, it'll probably make a few shows this year.

Cool. Looks pretty tidy to me, so how is it to drive with the clutchless manual then? Not familiar with those in Beetles, but I've seen a few cars with them, they're alright sometimes but they are a little complex.

its like anything, ok once you are used to it. Drives really nice, you just take your foot off the go pedal and change, simple, only has 3 forward gears, low (towing etc) 1 and 2, and it pulls off in all of em , the torque converter locks at 15 mph, so you still get the engine breaking if you need it, hence the 1 and 2 gears. pootles along really well, nice as pie infact, really quiet and just a pleasure to drive about in. Its not that complex either, I've figured the system out already, its pretty simple, and if it does go wrong I'll have no bother sorting it myself, even if parts do prove scarce or expensive.

cool motor bud. don't go with the yellow car black bonnet look.volksworld did it and it looked like a middlesboro taxi.and in my opinion w*nk.but thats just me. on the subject of volksworld how much of an abortion is the buggy project?I'm going to cancel my subscription soon cos its going from bad to worse.it appears to me that if ya don't have 30k don't bother doing a car.even the rat lookers have had a fortune spent.it doesnt inspire the average hicksville type of guy, like me, anymore. also not many of them actually touch their cars, they pay some "big name"to do it for them.wheres the fun and satisfaction in that. but money cant buy taste. sorry about the rant I'm just a little wound up from the drive home from work ;D
