hi. one other place on your car that is difficult to diagnose as far as water loss without other symptoms is the heater control valve. its on the bulkhead slightly to the drivers side. not really visible or checkable from top, but just visible from underneath if you know where to look. we've fitted a number of these. try suggesting it to your garage friend. cheers.

MOGGY, Mmmmm. Could be that - it'd be very difficult to spot the water leaking from there from above (I don't have access to ramps, so cannot get a really good look at the underside). I shall mention it to the garage guy tomorrow. I wait with bated breath... Thanks! I'm

Update. Just got back from the garage. Pressure tester was on the car while I was there. Leaks were visible from two cooling hoses on the offside, the nearside bottom portion of the radiator and possibly a slight weap from the heater control valve at the rear of the engine. Hoses will be done when I pick the car up in a couple of hours. Rad can wait until I service the car in 3k miles or so. Heater valve, I shall keep an eye on. At least it doesn't appear to be a head gasket problem! Thanks again for all the helpful comments. I'm

Ah well, that's a good result, doesn't sound too expensive to sort. Hard this diagnosing a fault without looking at the motor business!
