Trying to get online quotes for it atm, tried money supermarket, and it doesn't even list a skyline before 1990! Its a standard 1981 skyline 240K GT (awesome awesome car, just needs lowering, chin spoiler, the right wheels and for the rear lights to be changed...) But obviously I need insurance quotes first, where do you think can give them to me online then? I'm 20, 1 years claim free driving, 2 years driving, so I know its going to be quite expensive, would be nice to get an idea though, of course, could see how much it'd be to add it to my existing policy... inspirational photo

Classic insurance? It's old enough, i've had an '87 and an '84 car on it. They don't ask for any NCB (so you can use it on your daily if you have one), and I've never paid more than £250 a year in a fairly scummy area. That was with breakdown cover, agreed valuation, low excess and salvage retention.
All they might ask is for experience in a similar powered car, maybe RWD, just so they know you're not a wannabe drift king.
I used Sureterm first, and now I'm just about to take a policy out with Footman James. also try Herts Insurance. Don't bother with online stuff (most of them don't do it anyway, too specialised), talk to them and they'll often do you a better deal if they know exactly what you need.

Wannabe drift king? Nah, I'll keep the BM for that, use this for fun! (lol, yes I'm another one of the retro rides drifters)... Could be worth it with the classic insurance, FMJ seem to be rubbish for anything but old beetles for me, dunno why. I had my old beetle on with them for £380 a year, bargain! But anything else... They also seem to be rubbish with mods, but if you have a different story to tell about them... do! So, FMJ, sureterm, I'll search google for more classic policy's. PW, you OLD GIT.

Herts are better for mods.... FJ don't like them at all, and Sureterm were a bit iffy about my non-standard alloys, only let them through as they were VW OEM wheels and the car came with alloys originally. Picky picky!!!
But Herts have never cared much, I know plenty of people with big-engined beetles with rollcages and such, no problems. I have heard horror stories about them being reluctant to pay out but I think that's a given with insurers, more the case that I know more people insured with Herts than anyone else so I'm going to hear more bad tales!!

Chris Knott might be worth a punt, I get a discount cos I'm in the Volvo owner's club, but you don't need to be a VOC member to get in there.
I'm paying a fugging ridiculous amount a year cos I had my accident, but CK were the cheapest, even with my six naughty points (not admitting it anywhere else but here, kids) and accident, with pre 25 youngness in there. I went with them because:
1. Tesco were a bunch of clueless fools. They gave me a f**k off renewal quote which was nearly £350 more than CK. 2. I can put the Amazon on the same policy (as it turns out Highway, who insure meh Volvo, are the same people who are now insuring my C4) for less then what it would cost for two separate policies. 3. Their customer service agents were well good yo. 4. They might tolerate me insuring a rusty Japanese (turbo) coupe that's not a starion as well without damaging my wallet too much.

I bought my 240k when I was 20, and I've never paid more than about £250 to insure it. Had quotes of up to £3500... The insurance market has probably changed a bit since mine was last on the road - about 3 years ago, so I'm not sure when to go now... Just try all the usual classic insurers.
What are you doing with the rear lights? Plus - how are you planning to lower it?

Starting to think I'm with the wrong insurers. With mainstream cars Admiral were the cheapest for me by hundreds of pounds, but as soon as I got a car over 15 years old, it's shot up. I'm paying about £750 for my '89 Escort 1.6, which is only about £70 short of the 170bhp Alfa 156 I was running before. Gonna wait til June to get my second years no claims bonus, and have a look around modified/(Classic?) insurers. Looking at other peoples experiences on here I'm being well and truly shafted.

Trouble is Tri, you'll probably not find anyone to agree your Escort is 'classic'.... it's stuck between being a nice, safe, hard to steal new car and a loved old classic doing 40 miles a year. Unfortunately, the majority of people who drive '89 Escorts are rubbish drivers with no licence or tax and will probably leave it embedded in the back of a Merc. You could try some of the cheap and cheerful ones like Elephant and Bell, they might be good for you? And I'm not doubting how much you love your car and drive safely in it but unfortunately insurers make their money by generalising

Ah well, patience is the key with these things I guess, not planning on getting shot of it any time soon anyway - would just be nice to be paying a fair price for insurance on a 1.6 estate, lol.

I had the Panda with FJ and they were fine with mods. They even let me declare lowering for free during the policy, which I thought was pretty good! I had paid a fair whack (£80ish) over the unmodified premium for just wheels though, so maybe you pay the extra for any mild modifications. That was an '89 on a classic policy, £400 with mods (I'm 21).

It's a lovely car dude.
Is whassisface selling it then?, he's well into his J cars and being a RAF owned car he's got access to the tools to keep in proper well maintained.
I reckon you could do a whole lot worse than that example to be honest.

No mate, when Guy got the car he did the Head Gasket and as far as I know it's been ultra reliable since then.
Has he still got that tidy XR2 as well do you know?
