well I have no plans to go out and get another whip, but I've spotted 2 vehicles that float my boat recently. neither are on UK plates. what I'd like to know is what procedures are needed to get a uk reg on either of them, just so I know. they're both LHD, does that matter for either filing for a new reg or even SVA? and what avenues are open? I'd prefer a non-SVA route for cost reasons and I'm not fully aware of what standard of car will be required. both are in this country. i'll give you two in a case V case scenario. 1) LHD european built and reg'd car. last registered in east germany (yeah, that long ago), no papers. has chassis numbers, engine numbers and it wears its last issued east german plates still. what is needed to get a UK ID for this? SVA? or because its EU built and originally reg'd, it gets different rules? if it has to be SVA'd, is this a FULL sva it gets (like padded dash fascia, plastic bolt covers, emmisions regs, collapsing collumn etc.) or a milder form for a stock classic? 2) classic american pickup. obviously LHD again, very vague description. been over here for a bit, still on US tags. what documents are needed for a vehicle such as this? IE. if I go looking at it, what would the present owner need to produce on paper if anything? also, what tax classes will these two fall into? under 1.5 litre, post '72 for the east german. big and pre '72 for the american. I know thats a huge bag of questions, sorry for that, but I know the sharp minds on here will be able to unriddle them. I'm sure a few will have imported cars from overseas or had mates that have, I look forward to some info. thanks in advance guys

No SVA required on **stock** vehicles over 10 years old.
Now the DVLA will moan that you need a milion forms of paperwork from the country of origin to register a car over here but when you actually ask them they will do it with pretty much no paperwork. All you need is a valid VIN and a recipet from the vendor. You will have to prove that import taxes were paid at some point (and have a reciept from HMRC for this) however if you can't find this paperwork all is not lost. You can pay the VAT & duty based on your purchase / invoice price to HMRC and they will issue the forms you need to get the DVLA to register it.
Easy as that. I looked at buying a TBird which had been left in the UK by a returning US serviceman in lieu of a debt. No paperwork, not even any US plates on the car. DVLA would register it for me once I'd paid the taxes on it. As the purchase price was going to be £100 then that was like £10 duty and £18 VAT. But if you buy a £10K car which the seller has lost the customs paperwork for that a serious whack. And remember customs can value the car themselves if they don't like your invoice...

A pre '72 yank will be tax excempt.
The 1.5 litre will be standard PLG class (£99 for 6 months and £180 for 12 months at the mo) unless its young enough to be rated on emissions...
I think the cut off for the cheap tax is 1.45 litres

What about proving the cars age? That was a sticking point I stumbled at when I was looking into this last year. You need to show the cars age to prove its older than 10 to avoid the sva and if its old enough to be tax exempt (if applicable). Having no paperwork like original owners papers meant i couldnt prove the cars age. The guy at the local dvla office said they would accept an attestation by a recognised owners club etc, but I couldnt find anything applicable in my case - granted i never looked very hard.

proper owners club will help if you don't just want a Q plate.
Needs to be a DVLA recognised / registered club and that can be hard work for a club to sort out so not so many are. And some of them refuse to do modified cars our of spite!
I know some people have proved the year of one year only cars (yanks) by showinfg the DVLA guy a book with a picture and so forth in it. That was some time ago. Not sure if they'd accept that now.

aye, the car i was looking at was only made from 1950 to 1961 or something like that, so I reckoned on trying to persuade them that no matter what actual age it might be, its definately over 10, and is also tax exempt, even if they went on the last models made, its not going to be newer than `61. Never got round to it though, the ownership argument is still ongoing

no SVA? W00000T! sounding better by the minute. its only a ickle sub 1 litre from europe, so cheap tax too! if theres no owners club backing, it'll be Q'd then? is that an instant SVA? and does the lower tax bracket still operate with Q plates? as its probably newer than '72 anyway, I'd have to pay tax. plates don't really bother me TBH, so long as its legal thanks all, your stars

Hope there are no surprises.

DOn't spend money on Akku's say so... the DVLA will give you advice and you can get to speak to a real person a lot more easily now than you used to be able to. We do all like to think we live in some Nazi police state but the reality is that we have it pretty easy with this stuff and there are even people in these organisations who want to help you. Not all of them, but some... If you explain what you are trying to do the DVLA will explain the rules. Also get them to tell you what the applicable regulation is and where on the website you can find that incase when you speak to someone later they tell you different

I recently re-registered a UK built and registered Imp that had spent the intervening years in Holland - it was a very odd procedure.
1. Insure the car using only the VIN - takes some explaining but the insurance company were quite happy.
2. MoT the car again using only the VIN. It feels really weird driving the car on the public road and to a succesful MoT with no numberplates!
3. Go to your local DVLA office with certificate of insurance, MoT and proof of purchase or proof of age, or whatever weird foreign paperwork you can find.
4. Given the money for a tax disc plus IIRC £18 they then give you a tax disc and a certificate of numberplate. This means you can use it instead of a V5C to legally get new plates made up.
5. A few weeks later a new V5C turns up in the post!
This was only a couple of years ago so it should still apply. I got the sequence by phoning up the DVLA.

if you need any documents for the east german car, i could help you. If you have lost your papers or of the car has been of the road for more than 7 years now, you can apply for a confirmation at he KBA (german equivalent of the DVLA); this is a confirmation, that the car is not stolen. I don't know if this helps you (i am sure the document must be translated then), but if you need this, i can help you !
