well, thought id wait until a few points had been aired before i added my (probably worthless) 2p.
As a relatively 'new' yet, id like to think, established member of this online community - and i stress the community aspect as that is exactly what this has become, regardless of the black and white sensibility of it 'only' being a forum - my opinions can only stretch back over the last year and a bit and can only be so constructive as to add yet another insight into the discussion.
I will freely admit to being more of an 'asker' that an 'answerer' in the general flow of discussions carried out as i am reletively uneducated in comparison to a fair slice of the established members on here. Id say 99% of my questions, queries, reassurances etc have being answered in an extremely friendly, in depth & relevant fashion, with only a few exceptions of unneccessary sarcasm or patronisation. I have learnt more in the 13 months ive been on the forum than i had in the 6-7 years i have had an interest in all things old and on wheels. To say the forum is 'a victim of its own sucess' is to totally contadict the way in which microcosms develop.
The saying "Two heads is better than one" has particular significance in this instance i think as 4000 heads must be better than 2100 (previously estimated figures in this thread). As long as the dilution does not eventually push the strong components out it will continue to grow in functionality and achievement!
To comment on 'mean ages' changing is a fairly weak excuse as plenty of young folk on here have great talent and knowledge! Slater is remarkably creative and capable...and Adams knowledge could surely put alot of 'elder' members to shame....and the guy aint even got his license yet!!!!
There are members on here that continue to give solid, helpful advice on many a misunderstood or tricky subject with amazing regularity and solidarity, there are members dedicated to taking 295692345+ photos of events and spending immeasurable time painstakingly uploading them for us to oogle and "*right click, save as...". Then there also are the ones who maybe don't feel they can contribute in these ways so instead, offer encouragement and praise where due to push us through the tougher times or when we feel the need to have some acknowledgement in any shape or form - not for vanitys sake - but for just feeling good about what we're doing!
There will always be the discontented amoungst us and as HW et al are more than aware, you cannot please everyone.
There is so many aspects to our way of life and interests that to narrow it down can only be a negative thing. Stickers, for instance, almost all of us have plenty of them: on our cars, our toolboxes etc. Filler in cars: we've all been there and have a story about copious filler - why not share a funny story/experience with everyone else? I could go on but there's no need as the point is made. id say 98% of what goes up on the board is relevant in some way or another to 'modified classic cars'. If its not of interest to you, then don't involve yourself in the thread - concentrate on subjects you do have an interest in.
If you try and restrict it too far you'll end up with a horrible blinkered set of rules and conforminality that would then be the total opposite of the entire point of RR.com.....
...the freedom to break conformity and to do away with elitism.
These things 'choke' a community based on such liberal views.
I'm happy as it is and how it was. Bring the change! Bring the variation! Keep it fresh ;D

I haven't digested this thread fully, but anyone thinking that content is lacking/not to their liking is encouraged to post plenty of their own to show us how it's done I'm here, as much as ever... I lurk a lot more these days but that's partly because I generally don't have much to contribute other than "whoah cool", "I like it" etc... And partly because this place has become TOO good ;D I post threads over on VZI full of retro cars, but 90% of the content is leeched from here because this is THE place to get it from. There's no point me reposting it when you've all seen it already, is there? ;D This always happens at this time of year, as soon as spring comes and people are out messing with their cars and feeling a bit more vitality in them we'll see this place change again

Ok I'm not expecting a full resto from everyone but i don't seem to see many 'projects' going on in comparison to the other car forums i frequent! why is this?
I know everyones going to come on and say 'well we havnt all got the facilitys you have' but thats irrelivent! you can have a 'project' that you drive to work everyday and only gets worked on when its sitting on the road outside your house!
Oh and i bet people will have the cheek to claim that they in some way 'need' a modern car!! i mean come on!!

Um...I'm no local, being across the ocean and all, but TBH...this is the BEST forum I've ever been registered on. Ordinarily my interest wanes after a few posts, and I never go back. RR.com has become part of my 'day' now. I have two VW forums (a local and VWVortex), and RR. Those are the only ones I read on a daily basis, and I look forward to logging in to all of them. Every thread here is full of cars I've only dreamed of owning and working on. Contributing to a forum like this is very difficult, because I have zero point of reference to the retro cars you all take for granted . The only 'worthy' vehicle I own/have access to in a retro way, is my 1982 MkI Golf (Rabbit)...so I post it up. So now, according to Mr. Slater, I'm not to post up my VW? Trust me, if I could post up a build thread for my Imp or Cortina, I would...but funny that, there are none on these shores. I enjoy the community atmosphere here, and saw the same sort of post that started this thread, a few years back on my own local VW forum. The end result is we lost 50% of our members, who left to start their own forum, sundering the community in two . To me, the SPOT threads are pure GOLD! I get to see some of the coolest cars on the roads . Anyway, this is just my 2 cents, and I really hope this thread is due to the winter months dragging on and bringing down the mood. Although I have to say...when I see photos of recent work/SPOTs/etc, and I see no snow...I get very jealous. Right now, I have snow to the middle of my garage door...and it's easily the length of my driveway at that depth. Think about that when you get to drive your cars, some of us have to wait until mid-april/early may to even THINK about getting them out .

Oh and I bet people will have the cheek to claim that they in some way 'need' a modern car!! I mean come on!! Not so much, but my civic ticks all the boxes with the missus and when in a relationship compromises must be made, if you like, I will show you pics of the car where I fitted the wing and door from bladerunner30 and 2002gimps doner civic? It is in 80's unmatched paint style so it may class as retro. I do not believe that actually OWNING a retro car was a requirement of being a member of this site? Surely an interest is enough?

Oh and I bet people will have the cheek to claim that they in some way 'need' a modern car!! I mean come on!! When it's -45* Celsius, and I have 40km of snowy, wind-swept highway to drive to get my GF and I to our respective jobs, a 25 year old car isn't going to cut it . The fuel efficiency of my modern is a requirement in order to be able to afford my mortgage payments as well. Hardcore is one thing, unrealistic is another. I'd LOVE to only drive my MkI Golf everywhere, in all seasons, but there is no WAY I'm going to watch it rot out again due to 6 months of salty roads, after I put so much work into it. If I'm not the type of poster desired on RR.com, then I'll delete my account, but what good is a forum of people without differing views?

Let me get this straight. I am in no way saying I/we don't want to see your VW or whatever. I'm saying where have all the 'UNIQUE RETROS' gone? its relly hard to give a name to the cars I'm refering too without offending people but I'm sure people must understand what I'm saying?
Oh and to kick up some more curse word
I must say the SPOTTED threads are relly getting on my nerves lately. The other day i felt like going and taking some random pics of random cars and seeing if anyone noticed! Please try and keep them to stuff you don't see every day (or month for that matter)
i must say tho, the 'adandoned' thread is awsome

Unique Retros, I understand.. My GF desires a 53 Cadillac coupe, and there happens to be one for sale down the road a ways... . Shes made no requests in regards to paint, engine, or ride height...muahahahahahaha! Also...I've got my eye on a 1975 Chevy Vega, all beige, 24000 original miles, that's crying out for some droppage .

I must say tho, the 'adandoned' thread is awsome Thanks! ;D As for the modern car comment; my 14month old daughter and a sea of crettins on the road. That's why i have one too. And I won't ever be told that that is not a viable excuse. But thats a different rant altogether (NB, that's a generalisation, not aimed at you)

You've surprised me a bit there Slater - you're the last person I'd expect to see saying that there was something you didn't want to see! The truth is that when this forum started 'retro' cars weren't really defined. This forum is about hot rodding, racing, style, obscurity, legends, new trends, unloved and forgotten cars, budget cars, expensive cars, it's about a no-blinkers attitude. It's about Maseratis and Maestros, Datsuns, Daihatsus and DeTomasos. It's Classic & Sportscar, Jalopy, Enjoy! Retro Car, Hot Car, Motoring News, Top Gear, Custom Rodder and VIP Style all in one place.
The reality is that these threads pop up, they remind us about our duties as forum members, we adapt, remember what a great place this is and carry on until the next time.

Ahh yehh spot threads. Seen some nice modified retros out? Post them up! Seen a rusty ford mondeo? Don't. Cos its not really 'retro'? I'm seeing a lot of damage in this thread the retro scene is born from the 'popular' stuff IMO people do popular cars as an intro, you know cars like Mk1 Fiestas, old Polo's, Mk1 Escorts, Minis, hatchbacks We don't all have time, money, tools, skills, enthusiasm-at-the-end-of a working-day/week, we'd all love to, many of us have big ideas. Original Ideas. I'm seeing some great stuff on here from most members TBH, but also a lot of dull stuff. its like the Crystal Dome.

I have to say Slater bringing modern cars into this, erm, debate, is a bit uncalled for as no-one else had mentioned them and surely, just like the huge variety of retors on here, it's personal choice. I have no intention of justifying why I own a modern car. Let's start feeling the RR love again, hey?

so i cant tell you what i had for tea dang i nearly missed this and only just spotted it ( a point proved right there ) you have to realise a forum is a free flowing form and things move quickly . hotwires making an effort now to archive stuff but theres still a gap missing I'm one of the people who is here everyday and i still miss a lot so i feel sorry for the people who have real lives and get to go outside and everything who are here for only a brief time once in a while it grates me how a lot of information / banter / pics and general feeling are lost . not just here but everywhere its just not needed and theres a simple solution of having a " must see " room i can see the " but we will have -- " and " wait and see " comments coming but those are too overcomplicated for the everyday fella who just wants to spend a bit of time partaking in a forum either often or infrequently it wouldnt be hard to implement , just a single room where the decent ( not nessisarily most informative or groundbreaking things just a good cross section of quality ) is moved so people can comment but not start threads , make it change weekly ( or move the realllly good stuff to the new archive type room ) monthly or whenever . wibblepoo an email could be sent to let the waifs and strays know theres new stuff worth reading without trawling through pages of stuff you have no interest in it keeps the place as a whole and gives the people who want something to aim for with their posts a reason to post quality while not excluding the questions and everyday living threads i also see a need to have a "back of garage" where the tech stuff is and a " keys on the bar" where its banter about the dare i say it lifestyle lol at least i didnt say scene grr . the "general" room is too general and having it in those 2 sections would keep it clean and uncluttered with a lot less chance of losing what you want to read about ive seen forums where everything is seperated and it loses its essence so i don't want to see that ( not that hotwire would want 20 seperate rooms lol ) just enough so its not all being shouted in the living room lol it would only need 3 sections back of garage keys on the bar must see with the rest divided between that , everybodys appy ;D

I'm sure there are retro car enthusiasts that have joined up here that for whatever reason can't have a retro project on the go. It's easy to do stuff we really like when we have the oportunities...sometimes though the real world gets in the way. Anyway, IMHO R-R still consists of some good threads, some curse word threads and I'm glad to say mostly fantastic threads.
