They're not really my thing, but they're apparently good cars for some tasteful tuning, good little runabouts as well, and not by any means the worst looking front drive hot hatch. Besides that I like 80s borderline brick shaped classics, I'm probably the only person who loves Volvo 740s! ;D ;D ;D And as has been said, not so long ago some classics were considered bangers. The Imp, for example, was laughed at by a lot of people as an unreliable shed until a point, and you still get pub bores and eejits who think the head gaskets and cooling systems spontaneously destroy themselves. And I'm a fan of many of the better Soviet cars that even now are considered sh*t simply because they were built by people who didn't have the same point of view as most British people, i.e. the British people who to this day can't accept that there might be something good about a Moskvitch 412 or a Volga M21 or Lada Riva, and sneer and sarcastically call you "comrade" or "Vladmir" when you try and convince them otherwise. So I'm certainly not going to persecute mkIII owners and enthusiasts just because I'm not really into that sort of thing myself.

You cant say that its not retro just because yours broke down occasionaly though, I own a mk2 Orion (mk4 escy) and my brother owned a mk3 escy and neither of us have ever had any major mechanical problems to speak of in many happy motoring years. Yes they rust like salt covered tinfoil in a rain storm (mostly made of tinfoil as well ;D ) but 90% of the retros on here and classics out there on the roads rust just as much and have a much more of a stained mechanical history, like Rev says the mk1 Imp was riddeled with problems (which were all mostly fixed by the mk2,3 it has to be said) and it is now a Classic icon. If Pug 205s, Maxda mx-5s, Golfs, mk1 Cavillers, Kadetts, mk1/2 Polos etc are retro then no matter how poorly built or not it should be a retro?

I came across a silver 1600 Ghia (not literally I hasten to add!) at a local used car lot the other weekend. 60k, one owner, 'kin immaculate...for £395. Yeah, it took me right back to when I was listening to Bananarama and riding a Raleigh Chopper which, at the time, was SOOO uncool, as my mates all had those gold Raleigh Burners. Bloody hell, here I am getting all nostalgic at 27 years old! As I see it, even if it ain't retro yet, it's the kind of motor that young guys can afford to buy and tune, to rebel against the Saxo generation.( ;D) If it's going to help several years worth of seventeen year olds get into the old car scene, I'm all for it!

I have started noticing these about, there are a few still knocking about the Essex country side. Including a base 3 door in brown in the next village. My dad had a 1.3 Ghia during the late 80's which was the first car i can ever rember being in. Definatly retro but i can't see the mk4 ever gaining the same status.

Must've missed this thread first time round I would say yes IMO. The Mk4, no!! Had a Mk4 3i though & in all honesty it was a good car It was reliable, fairly rot free, local with 2 owners, fsh, 100% original & about £500 - £600. Would probably still have it if it wern't written off by some thieving curse word who didn't have the faintest idea of how to steal a car!!!! ...but that's another story Missus also owned this for a few years... Was a 1600 Ghia with a few Mk2 bits on it running carbs ;D ;D Best car she's had IMO. Mate in work was asking the other day what I'd have if I didn't have the Escort but nothing RWD Said I'd walk ;D hehe No, it'd be a choice between a Mk1 Golf GTi, 1.9 205 GTi, but what I said I'd really fancy would be an early XR3 non-injection, completely standard looking on original Clovers, lowered as much as poss with a 1.9 conversion running twin DCOE's

I think the Mk3 Escy has got to be retro - you never see them any more! My brother has a battle-scarred, stock(ish) looking, 5-door Mk3 Escort with 1600 CVH on twin 40 dellortos, slammed over some well rusty 15inch steels ;D ;D. He's yet to join the forum (I keep bugging him about it!!), but he'd love it here! He should be at RCS with it though. The Mk4 will be retro in time. I don't care for them much at the moment but once they start disappearing and the Ford Fungus is the banger of choice, they'll get the retro status for sure!
