saw a 89 mayfair or somesuch in the autotrader the other day, £2.5k its going for and it isn't perfect looking. no WAI can you lose getting those bits fixed up, and even at that, still gonna be worth £5-800 right now, especially if you tax it.

You see minis on sale for silly money, but they never SELL for silly money. The ones changing hands are all the ones worth under a grand. Having repairs done properly costs a hell of a lot. The trouble with the mini scene tax, is it encourages the "specialists" who don't know their ![](http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/underwire/2009/11/fox_60.jpg) from their elbow. One friend had some welding done on the cheap by a well known garage, and it lasted just three years.. They scarcely tacked the panels on, and didn't even use any seam sealer. Unless you do it yourself, you WONT make a profit on it.

I know someone who had a front end put on their mini 18months ago, its now rusting and in need of a front end next year. This was done by a reputable garage.

if your in wolvehampton, then your best bet is popping over to dereks mini centre in wednesbury (IIRC). they produce good quality restorations. father and 2sons outfit. they go to the main mini shows. theres jonspeed in nuneaton, but I wouldn't go there ![:-X](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/lipssealed.png) sleaford minis ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png) - hmm, the only way to fix a rotten windscreen scuttle to take the front wings off. leaving the wings on is a bodge ansd false economy.

We've been quoted about £2500 for the resto on our Mini. Sills are ok but the RH rear side is going to have to come off to fix the rear wheelarch which has got quite nasty. Price includes a full respray and the strip-down/build-up - time consuming stuff if you're looking to save money.
Agree that bodging the scuttle is pointless and a bodge. Do it properly or not at all. As for whether it's worth doing, who cares? Do it for love, not the price. How many classics would have died if people took the "economics" route?

I wouldn't have said sleaford bodge the scuttle, they remove 100% of the old one, replace the top dash rail and weld in a new BMH one.

Again thanks for the advice.
I think I'm going to bring it down to Wolves and run around in it for a bit at least. Should be good for Summer and the MOT runs up until Sept.

what are ppl paying such money for welding repairs for!!!! minidan, £1500 is a fair price for welding & paint but anymore ifeel is a joke, its not like mini panels cost much & putting new ones is'nt that hard, i know for most ppl they have'nt the skills required or simply have'nt the time anymore than 1800 for panels n paint on a mini is extorsion to me, i'd pay for a top paint job on a concours car but an everydayer!!!! a nicely prepped car with 2 good 2k coats!
nightmareracing i'm sure would agrre

I wouldn't have said sleaford bodge the scuttle, they remove 100% of the old one, replace the top dash rail and weld in a new BMH one. huh...the wings sit on top of the scuttle and are spot welded to them. in that seam there are at least 3 layers of metal coming together. from the factory, the join line where the wing meets the scuttle was not sealed. a natural rust trap which is why they rot out. coupled with the fact that the "wider" style windscreen fitted to later models lifted in the corners. this allowed water into the scuttle corners which is essentially a hollow box section. Rot magnet. the only way they could replace the scuttle without removing the wings, they would have to remove the closing plates too. but if its that bad, i'd be still looking for new wings and front pan.
