OK, say there was a massive VOSA inspection thing going on. You know, flagging down random cars and hauling them onto ramps and tearing them apart... that sort of thing... What powers do they have? I know once you're in there and they spot a defect they can take your car off the road... but what if you didn't stop at all? What if you just thought "I don't have time for that sh*t," and carried on? To my knowledge, the only people you legally have to stop your car for are uniformed Police officers, in marked Police cars or on foot. The thought came into my head as we passed a VOSA inspection operation recently and they showed rather a lot of interest in my car as I gunned it off a roundabout ;D. They didn't try to flag me down as they were getting cars going the other way. Bet they were dying to get their teeth into it though

They often work in tandem with the cops and immegration officials, looking for illegal potato pickers out our way mostly and over loaded vans etc...
I dunno if they have the power to stop you or just if they have cops with them.

VOSA have the power to pull you now just like coppers. No idea what they would do if you drove off though, youd probably get a visit from the police I guess. Proper VOSA check points are usually backed up with police motorcyclists anyway. don't mess with the VOSA boys, they have all kinds of mystical powers nobody knows about.

Police pulled me over, police escorted me to VOSA check area, VOSA checked car, VOSA ordered car off road due to slight leak from brake union. That's how I roll To be fair though the guy commented on my Airbags in a friendly way and allowed me to drive my car home as I was only two roads away. He could quite easily have been a little Hitler about it.

The only time I've ever seen one of their checkpoints to date was on the way into work in my old job in Catford.. they'd cut the dual carriageway down to one lane in the middle of morning rush hour.. and then they were there again for the evening... and were pulling random cars... Didn't pull me.. but I'd have been mad as hell if they had.. as would my boss I think..
What gets me is that as the mrs dropped me off at work.. she had to do the route back home again.. and obviously back to pick me up again in the evening.. and she told me both times she had a clear journey there and back.. they'd planted themselves there for the rush hour.. and gone off just after...
If that's not evil thinking I don't know what is..
Again police bikes.. and a car a bit further down the road...

VOSA can have all the powers they want, and a policeman can jump out in the road, but if the road ahead and behind me means its not its safe for me to stop, i wont. ;D they can summons me

Thanks guys. Didn't see the rozzers there, just the VOSA mafia. There was a car (VOSA) a bit further up the road that was radio-ing likely looking cars to the blokes at the checkpoint. The look on their faces was priceless when I went past! I've got an MOT coming up and a few things to put right so may or may not have gotten through it... just glad they were on the other side of the road.

I've only ever seen one when we were on our way back from picking up the 205 RG. In the layby were a couple of minibuses being emptied and searched and a tatty looking Astra being loaded onto a lorry. As we went past they all stopped and watched us! Was surprised they didnt stop us considering we were in a heavily laden Volvo estate, with a very very tatty trailer on the back carrying a 205 stacked the the roof with tyres. How many kilos of a class A drug could you fit in that lot? Plus they could have had a field day on trailer brakes and weight limits

Been stopped twice. First time I was towing a Lancia Volumex on a trailer with an HPE. Said my rear selt belts were frayed so he took it off the road with immediate effect -despite having no passengers! So I swopped the cars -putting HPE on trailer, towing with the (Juicier) Volumex and left. Later, I took the belts out (too early for mandatory rears!) and passed a new MOT. Just a pain. 2nd was a VOSA stop cos Police ANPR said I wasnt insured. Once I had proved I was (which seems to be happening a lot -VOSA took over). 30 secs after he had crawled under the front of the car he was out -smiling. Bad news I thought. 'Anyone who greases his brake pipes understands cars he said -off you go'. Result! They can be human -luck of the draw I guess!

I think it's to stop the steel ferrules from rusting - that seems to be a favourite reason to fail a car in an MOT - I've had two cars in recent times failed because of corroded brake hose ferrules. That reminds me, I must grease mine...

They pulled me when I was legally driving my mates Mk2 Golf. Obviously pre radioed in or heard me coming. The car was riding 1/4" off the bumpstops, had a big crease in the rear 1/4 panel where it'd been in a previous crash and not jigged properly, had an exhaust that looked like it had a backbox but really it was a straight pipe through a backbox case, and had 2 2000w vibe subs with separate amps in the back.
Was there for about 1/2 an hour with em crawling all over the car, asked if it was a cut & shut etc. The guy then goes "we're gonna make sure you won't be driving home and gets under the car. He then gets up looking stupid and says "well they brakelines aren't pulled tight and he's ajusted the bias valve properly. They then got the drugs dog in which found nothing.
In the end they conceded and let me get on my way. Was bloody annoying though.
