I have actually found out that in the case of plating mild steel, it will stick to zinc based primer, possibly even better than it will to bare steel. You want weld through primer, or the stuff sold as "cold galvanise" treatments. Given that it may stick to primer like that (obviously only because of the very high zinc content) then you could copper plate ANYTHING that paint will stick to! No, I am not a professional.. It is just something I have researched before (coz its cool)
I am not 100% sure about it sticking to primer, but apparently it works with when immersed in copper sulphate with a drop of sulfuric acid added, with a copper anode and a battery charger used to provide the juice.
Obviously, various brands of zinc primer may be different, so results arn't guaranteed. Its worth an experiment though!

Hmmm. Epoxy would be too thick to spray on, and frankly look naff on a car. I reckon mix copper powder with proper car lacquer, and gun it on!
