it's the same in PSP. I'll screenshot the 'edit node' function of the vector drawing tools tonight it means you can keep tweaking until it's poifect. *n

^ paths. Used in Photoshop and Illustrator for creating editable paths. Rather than manipulating pixels, a mathematical description of what you draw is created meaning it can be enlarged or reduced without loss of quality. Those 'handles' that you can see can be pulled about to alter the path that the lines running from the handles take. After a little practice, it's great! Mind you, I've been using it for 20 years......gulp i can make shapes with em i just cant fill em with colour or a gradient??

well attempt number two.. and I think I know what I'm doing wrong now... I get too bored.. and too cold sitting at my desk.. rush it.. and end up with a half arsed result.. still I think this one came out better than the strada.. just a bit wishy washy...

trg1984, when you've made a shape and made sure that it's a closed path, use the swatches palette or in this case, the gradient palette to drag the gradient or swatch into the shape you've made. It's really that easy. This is in Illustrator CS3, but it's the same right back to Illustrator 88! and it works similarly in Photoshop as well.

actually looking at that this morning it doesn't look as bad as I thought.. might have a bit more of a play with it tonight... just need to smooth out some of the line marks where I've used the paint brush and work a bit more on the shadows and reflections.. should have left the background alone... I might try redoing that as well...
The lights were done using the glarefx tool in gimp.. I gave them a pale yellow wash first to help warm it up.. lol.. whether that makes a diff I don't know
I'm pleased with the very front.. and the back rear quarter.. I think the rest needs improving to make it more cartoony and less arty

Full 'brightness', unless you decide to change the opacity

Was getting there using GIMP, had a nice line drawing of a 105E Anglia going on, albeit with not very round wheels... And my computer crashed . That'll teach me for trying to get it to do more than 2 things at once. And not saving regularily. Can anyone explain to me how to use layer masks properly? Specifically, how to just mask out say the outline, instead of a white mask that then masks out the background when you have the mask on? If that makes sense...

I personally don't like those 'gradient' tools. Too even and systematic. If you look at cartoons (as opposed to renderings) theres normally only a few colours/shades - often a lowlight, main colour, and highlight for each colour on the subject.
The more colours you use (and if you you gradient because it gives you 1000's!) the more 'rendered' it'll look and less like a cartoon
