Here's what the MOT Bible says...
Obligatory mirrors area.
A) an exterior mirror fitted to the offside (right-hand side when seated in the driver's seat)
B) an exterior mirror fitted to the nearside (left-hand side when seated in the driver's seat)
C) an interior mirror
1.Passenger vehicles with no more than 7 passenger seats first used before 1 August 1978 must have any one of the above options.
2. Minibuses first used on or after 1 August 1983 must have an exterior mirror fitted on both the offside and nearside ('a' and 'b')
3. Passenger vehicles with more than 7 passenger seats of any age, and all passenger vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1978 (not being a minibus as above), must have two mirrors, one of which must be option 'a'.
So in conclusion, cars registered before August 1978, ANY ONE mirror (left/right/internal), cars registered during/after August 1978, drivers mirror PLUS internal OR Passenger mirror.

My brothers Caterham has three mirrors, the side ones are fitted on the removable doors which he runs on the road without in the dry, the rear one is also kinda blocked by the rear roll cage thats a factory fit

Since this has turned into an interesting (!) discussion on what mirrors are needed I seem to remember being told that older commercial vehicles and possibly estates needed both wing mirrors as the rear internal view may get blocked by "stuff".
I was told this in relation to Herald estates as early Heralds had no external mirrors except for the estates which had both. I suppose that might not have been law but a "recommended" dealer fit option or something.

apparently accordind to person who purports to uphold law you can , ok if its drivers side off but illegal to drive with no passenger side door mirror . arrows quite and easy to get hold of and no one would hear if you driving by in plain mundane car with false plates and anyone with hoody or tracky gear on fair quarry in my view . cant stand the druggy eyes when the morons look at you plus they stink Just got the rear veiw and a drivers side peek mirror on the cortina- all legal. Yeah random vandalism sucks, had a car get drunkenly 'danced' on by a woman in high-heels- absolutely trashed the roof- so now I randomly hunt high-heel wearers*. Ironicaly, I wear hoodies. *not actually true, of course...

The two mirrors requirement makes sense. Drove a replica thing (56 plate) recently and that had no internal mirror, just two HUGE external ones. Thats becauyse theres no visibility out of the rear window on those things, like most modern hatches!

all passenger vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1978 (not being a minibus as above), must have two mirrors, one of which must be option 'a'. it still looks to me like it don't specify where the second mirror must be, just that at least one of them must be on the drivers side, which is how i've always intepreted it, so you could have one door mounted drivers side mirror and one drivers side wing mirror as well and still be legal, arguably if you had one of those mirrors with the magnifying end part you could probably say its two seperate mirrors in one frame.

its all academic if the jobsworth coppers don't even know their own laws neither my mk2 cortina or mk1 escort need outside mirrors and if i took the mot requirements to the fullest they don't even need doors
