Spent last night visiting friends in Solihull. As we left my mates house to walk to the pub I noticed both numberplates had been removed from my Volvo. Annoying but not the end of the world I guess. I rang the police who took all the details over the phone and gave me a crime number and said it was ok to drive home with no plates on aslong as I get them replaced ASAP. I'm guessing that theres the possibility the plates have been taken to disquise the identity of a similar car thats been stolen and that it could be used in a crime of some sort... either that or it was kids messing about. Who knows, but I wont be too suprised if I get the odd speeding ticket in the next few days.
Anybody here had any experience of this or has any idea why someone would nick a set of number plates?

Sorry to hear that.
Either they are having a laugh, or they are attempting to 'clone' your plates to avoid speeding fines, getting caught, etc etc

My bet's on cloning. "Fun" exploits tend to be more about trashing than pinching anything specific like that. Bummer, some people just don't get the spirit of Christmas do they?

Happened to my neighbour last weekend.......
He called the local cop station and ended up talking to the cheif inspector. They are taking it all very seriously.....Could be related to any kinda crime including terrorism....Maybe he was being over dramatic but it has caused my neighbour a lot of grief.
He had to report to the station, get a load of paperwork, tell his insurance company, take the paperwork to get his new plates, NOT fit the plates till he was in the presence of a police witness.......
They also gave him an official note that he has to carry for a year. His number is now on the register and he should expect to be stopped many times over the year......
Was explained to him that its also used by organised crime for "fuel runs"....Fit the plates, fill up, drive off..Plates get used in multiple garages on multiple vehicles in the same area, before moving on somewhere else.
I'd be making sure that the police were fully aware of the theft.............

damn thats some bad luck, dude. hope the b'stards get caught. wonder if there's been anyone stupid enough to nick plates of a car running nicked plates? ie. someone swaps on some plates for a "free" tour of inner london, while parked up some chav takes 'em to get some "free" petrol. that would be a small slice of justice

This happened to the cleaner at my old workplace a few years back, they broke in and robbed the tax disc too though. She had nothing but grief for about 4 months with her plates being used on a car the same as hers for speeding, poor parking, robbing petrol several times, being in a minor accident, and general arseing about. SHe found herself being stopped by the police on a weekly basis to confirm it was her and not the scumbags. It all just died off after 3 months though. The police said it was normal forthe scum to change the plates again every few months to avoid being caught.

The other problem I had was that the paperwork I needed for the new plates was back home in Milton Keynes and fax copies were not acceptable. It took me two days to get the new ones made and I couldn't drive home without them as I was travelling too far and through too many police 'regions' to risk it. Thieving bunch of dirty scumbagging...*^%*$ÂŁ*

There are tamper proof reg plates available for this very reason. Thief tries to pull them off and they just shatter. Still leaves you with no plate (doubt they'd try it with both) but you don't get the hassle.
Of course, it just makes them make it harder for you to buy plates which just encourages this tactic even more.

any monkey can buy plates over the web, no questions asked, so all this guff about providing id, logbook, passport, gas bill, urine sample, DNA strand etc when buying plates legitimately, is a total waste of time.

This happened to my mate as well, they used it to nick fuel, it was from his AX GT and they stuck them on a grey Astra. We attached his new plates with 8 rivets a piece, just to make sure they wouldn't do it agin!

happened to my first saab a couple of years ago. Reported it to avoid getting tickets etc. Then had to through the hoops of proving I owned the vehicle, and that I really was the person I thought I was in the mirror.

Aye, its the same with all these initiatives - makes life harder for joe public, but the law-breakers arent affected in the slightest.

Theres a guy up at Lymm truck services on the M6 who makes novelty numberplates for lorries e.t.c. Hel make standard numberplates for cars with no docs aslong as its for "show only"..... errm ok!
Surely this has got to be a better way of cloning a car than stealing a set of plates as the police will be on the lookout for them. If I didnt know my plates were on another cas as well as my own it could be weeks before I knew about it. With so many police cars now having ANPR fitted they're bound to get pulled over pretty quickly. I wonder if Ill get my numberplates back? Hope the police give them a good kicking either way.

Not sure if this is still the case, but it used to be that in France your numberplates had to be metal and riveted on. Seems like a much simpler solution to me... Sorry to hear about that though, can imagine that's a total pain in the .
