Thanks for your interest! I am feeling truly like an old man, whilst being immensely proud. My daughter who is aged 21 has always been interested in cars and a couple of years ago, during covid, passed her driving licence. My wife and I bought her a little 1.4 VW Lupo barn find, which in the barmy and odd summer of 2020, we both restored. We changed the clutch, exhaust, cambelt, serviced it, cleaned it, lowered it, added pop out windows etc etc. It was perfect father and daughter bonding time. I loved it and it will be a forever, core memory. Wind forward and last week she tells me that she has bought a new car. I was surprised and asked what it was. Its a 1982 Porsche 924 in the fastest colour - red. Its a non runner, which we hope we can get sorted and has very little rust or rot. On Sunday we collected it from Newbury, from its very friendly owner. A big thanks to Dom for loaning us his car transporter. The money shot The car tries to start, but just keeps turning over and stinks of fuel. I have seen that the 5th Injector or cold start valve can be issues. I really want to get it running for her to enjoy. The best part is that it will be MOT and Tax free once up and running and on classic insurance should be cheap for her to run. Thanks to dan91 and Spencer for helping us unload. I am sure that we will have many questions over the coming months.....

Update - The car refuses to start and stinks of fuel. I checked the oil and it way over full and also smells of fuel. All drained now and new oil and filter ordered.
Is anyone knowledgeable on Bosch K Jetronic systems? I can see 4 injectors plus a 5th injector. A warm up regulator and a fuel distributor. Where should i start with diagnosing the problems?

No expert & it’s a long time since I’ve messed with K jet .
Do you definitely have a spark ?
Is the flap in the airbox moving freely ?
Disconnect the cold start (5th) injector & try .
I’m sure someone with a lot more knowledge than me will offer better advice soon .

Could start by unplugging the 5th injector. They have a tendency to stick open. May be permanently stuck open/leaking. In my experience they work perfectly well without them!
After that it gets more complex.

Oh those are nice! 5th injectors of that age (not entirely sure about K jet) tend to be a bit of a standalone device. And yes they can flood an engine with fuel - even to the point of hydrolocking them. Disconnect it in a way it gets no fuel anymore.

Thanks friends. I spent a couple of hours on the car last night. 5th injector unplugged as it seems to chuck out quite a lot of fuel.
The car turns over, it tries to start, but no luck.
We have spark. We have fuel at the 5th injector. WAR was rebuilt (not by me, but a Porsche specialist recently). Flap inside the air box moves freely.
Its turns over and pops and bangs....But nothing..
Any other ideas? Is there a checklist somewhere for this system?
A couple of attempts:

Excellent project! Had a similar issue with my brothers "85 944, turned out to be a crank position sensor kicking out, replaced it and she fired up after 18 months of sitting there! She (called Boris) even played a starring role in his wedding recently

Great buy, top job by your daughter.
Just sticking with the sparks for a minute. Have you checked the plugs, points and dizzy cap? Checked the engine timing, just in case the dizzy is out? After that lot, I think I'd pull the injectors and check for fuel flow while spinning the engine over. Regardless, no doubt you'll get the non start resolved. Bookmarked.

I had one of these and the 5th injector was bypass and triggered with a button on the dash. Used to have to press is a few times while turning over. Didn’t over fuel it then.
Definitely take the spark plugs out and clean them and get them Really hot and put them in, that’s how mine started after been played up for 10 years.

Could I suggest that you join the 924 Club, I have and it has been well worth it. Loads of information and good people ready to offer help and advice.
The 924 is a very underrated car but it very definitely is a true Porsche delivering the Porsche driving experience that is expected of it.
A Club member has developed and is selling EFI kits for the 924 and I have one on order. In one fell swoop the installation eliminates the 5th injector, ignition module (NLA) coil and distributor, pressure accumulator, K-jetronic block etc, etc, in fact all the components that give trouble. EFI brings the car up to date with modern and easily obtainable parts.
In case you are interested, he has produced an installation video which explains everything.
Best wishes and best of luck with the car. I hope you and your daughter enjoy it as much as I do mine.

The benefits far outweigh the cost, imo.

The whole kit cost £1800 including carriage and in my view is excellent value for money.

And the engine still looks close to factory as they use the old metering head as feed to the new injectors. The price might seem a lot to some compared to the price of a 924 but they are only going up in value. I reckon too, come sell time most of the investment in the EFI kit would be returned. Win, win.

Having made a loss on just about every car I have ever owned, appreciation has never been a factor when buying. i have never expected to make a profit out of my hobby. It has always been about the driving pleasure or the need to experience a particular model that I have lusted over for years. I'll probably be shot down and bombarded with hate mail after admitting that I have never been a fan of a 911 except perhaps for the 911S but having owned a 944 and a 250bhp 944 Turbo I'm really sold on the transaxle models. The 924 is where it all started and to my mind the purest iteration. With just about ideal weight distribution handling and turn in is a delight. The later models were galvanised so corrosion shouldn't be much of a problem and I really cannot understand why they are valued as they are.
The Achilles heel is the injection system but replace it with EFI and the car is pretty much perfect in my view. Parts are well catered for and even the dashboards which crack over time are available, albeit at a price.

I know its no longer the popular thing to do, but I'd stick a couple of DCOE Webers on it.
Its what they did in back then on racecars that originally came with early Bosch injection systems to improve performance.
I like the simple elegance of Weber carbs, relatively easy to dial in, and cheaper than most injection conversions.

I like the simple elegance of Weber carbs, relatively easy to dial in, and cheaper than most injection conversions. There's a lot to be said for that and I do like Webers. However, just checking a random supplier, I see that their conversion kit including VAT is £300 more than I paid for the EFI system. In the end, it comes down to personal preference. classiccarbs.co.uk/product/weber-40-dcoe-carburettor-conversion-kit-for-porsche-2-0l-924-engine/
