Discovered how the headlights undo. The inside of the glass has become hazy with age, and with the lights on would glare badly. Pretty bad, so I set about cleaning inside with rag on a stick. An improvement was made. More light goes forwards now rather than being scattered. A task worthwhile. Phil

Time to finish up today. Bought a new trim clip and assembled the passenger side lights. Got the rest cleaned up and refitted and aligned. Much better (on a relative scale at least). Oncoming traffic will be happier. Phil

Ordered me an aircon kit. That plus gas came in about $80 cheaper than having it done at a shop. The price of these things has come way down. Phil

Nice. You can't buy the gas in Europe anymore without a licence, but I've found a guy that does it both cheaply and well.

Nice. You can't buy the gas in Europe anymore without a licence, but I've found a guy that does it both cheaply and well. AFAIK In the US you need to be EPA-certified to buy gas, when I was working in the G.O.M. back in 1995-98 I had to get EPA certification before I could work on the rigs AC & Refrigeration equipment, which meant a 5 day course with 4 part examination each part having a minimum 60% pass, if you passed all 4 you got Universal certification This was well before similar legislation was introduced in the UK, when it was they wouldn't accept my US certification and I had to get C&G F-gas certification, which again involved another 5 day course with an online examination and a minimum 60% pass

134a you can still buy and use without in small quantities, here. There's self-fill cans on the shelf at the auto parts store.
I don't want to lose any, regardless. It's expensive.

What you can buy in Europe is R290, claimed to also work in older systems. R290 basically is propane.
Phil: nice car, would love to have one some day!

Just finished re-applying some leather cream. Jay Leno's garage. Seems good enough. Leather sucked it all up. I gotta I'll be needing to do it again on a more frequent basis.
The leather oil I bought before left the seats a little bit slippery. This stuff seems to soak in better and not go for quite as much shine.

the best drop in is a r290/ r600a mix ( propane / isobutane) this is what many of the drop in gasses sold on ebay etc are. You can also buy camping gas cannisters for cold / altitude camping which are dry and a similar mix. I have had this in my Range Rover instead of R12 for 4 years now, works a treat also put it in the Street Ka instead of R134a for a trial to see if it leaked, worked so well it's still in there. If you are enviromentally minded its a good combination for old cars, if it leaks out it's nowhere near as damaging as F gasses.

Well, I'll vacuum it down and see how well it holds for a few hours. That's a good test to do before applying any refrigerant. The seals are new so it should hold.

Before the rain today, I did something I forgot to. Scrubbed as much of the latte out of the carpet that I could. That's pretty well ingrained though. Ran the engine with the heater on max to dry it out some. That'll do. Phil

Found something suitable to put under the light to prop it up. And, uh. Well, then. Not quite all the lights still work. Took it apart, cleaned the lens and replaced the burned bulbs. Much better. It's a nice thing to have working on the car. Phil

Woo. Aircon kit arrived. Fitted the new receiver-dryer. Put the pump on and left it for half an hour. Pulled a good vacuum. Switched the pump off and left it sit. Vacuum remained, so out with the refrigerant. Started adding it in and suddenly clonk and on came the fans. Filled it up with 20oz and the pressures are where they should be. Turned the cabin into a meat locker in short order. Happy with that. Phil

Put the plastic nonsense back on. Need to figure out how to fix the other engine cover.

They are a nice thing, they’re the last “proper” looking Jaguars IMHO.

Ran the car a while. Doesn't get hot, the aircon still works properly and it's generally quite a nice old thing. Do need to find another string wheel though, this one isn't the nicest any more. Another bulb burned in the climate panel. Might pull that out at some point (does the fan knob, recirc) and at the same time I might customize the button LEDs. Maybe. Phil
