Yikes... First engine warning light yesterday... I have installed bimmerlink on my iPad, alas the obd plug-in does not arrive until later today. I popped my £10 reader on and it worked, vanos solenoids. Google and YouTube showed me what, where ,and what to do... So I did, remove, clean, blast all the internals with brake cleaner then book them up to a battery to activate while more blasting with brake cleaner. Once that was done I lightly oiled them and the O rings and reinstalled. Engine light still on... Had a bit of a thrash, ignition on/off a few times... Light OUT...😁 Car starts quicker and feels crisper.

Good work. The joy of old BMWs. So many warning lights but rarely serious enough to halt your progress entirely, even if sometimes they stick you in limp mode.

630i pro's... You can get a 6' Christmas tree in. 630i cons... They break down when you put a 6' Christmas tree in. Something's draining the battery, spoken with the e63/4 forum... It could be, systems not shutting down, micro power module, intelligent battery sensor, parasitic drain. I think I can rule out the alternator, engine running it reads 14.5... MPM seems to show with i-drive issues which I don't have... May also have a slow started motor, that's really slow for the first turn then all is well. Ah the joys of complicated systems and a billion sensors when the weakest string in your car maintenance harp is electrics.

It may be worth checking what battery is fitted, and what battery the car thinks it has fitted. If you know of someone who has
-Carly -ISTA -Snap-On Solus -Another setup which can read the battery data on the car ; I'm mainly aware of the above. Foxwell and Delphi may do ones which can read that deep.
You could see if there is a mis-match.
Some reckon the IBS (Intelligent Battery System) needs programming when it's changed, others don't. I've both fixed the issues in the short and long(ish ; I've not kept the cars for long enough) term via registering even a used battery correctly on these Beemers.
As you say, it's a joy of something newer, albeit most cars from 2010(ish) require some form of registration of the battery. The joy of more creature comforts in a car and ever-tightening emissions requirements.

ChasR, I visited Mersey Battery this morning, my battery is in need of charging but sound. I have checked and the main opinion is an unregistered battery should not cause the problem. I removed the power lead for the ibs the other day for 16 hours, V's dropped but not as much, on reconnecting I got lots of warning lights, pending codes and very erratic rpm's. Multiple code clear and restarts cured it. It's not the alternator... That reads spot on. Multimeter crocodile clips arrive tomorrow, I'll do a parasitic drain test. 😁😁

Lovely car, I'm enjoying this thread!
I've got a 2005 E90, same colours - Monaco Blue / Dakota Beige, with the same N52 engine, although mine's the smaller 2.5 and is mated to a manual box. I might start a thread about it sometime...

Received my Halfords voucher for buying insurance... I chose not to use my current provider after their 111% increase. Went over to Edge Lane and bought a voucher discounted jump pack with built in SOS torch. Pleased I did because the car would not start 😂 Once going I went over the M62 to Manchester and back, put some charge in, unplugged ibs again, see if she starts in the morning... 🙄

Oh yes, very nice to be inside, this and my giulietta are probably 2nd & 3rd faves ever.... 1st place was not a car 🤐 . . I have received my new IBS, I still need another piece of loom before fitting. I went with Hella rather then bmw, (suspect bmw don't make them) saves £100. I went mad in work, mid November... Quit, so I have no income, getting a job won't be easy approaching 63 and plenty of body damage. I have to watch the pennies. I invested £500 of savings in converting part of the loft into a small but perfectly formed recording studio... Came in under budget... Not bad for all the timber (floor, walls) soundproofing, carpet tiles, low level, adjustable arm chair, table, led lighting, mike boom & filter, decent new microphone, software and a used iMac. Pretty pleased with myself, just need to learn to use it all. I have someone to teach me and point me in the right direction for work. Almost forgot, I get £700 in March for directing a play. 😎

Fitted the new IBS sensor... After rewiring the connections... Still have the same starting problems 😖 So long as I keep it unplugged she starts. Had a nice new year's day spin round Cheshire, tramlines like a curse word in lane one of the motorways and on damp twisting roads I have no faith in the like new Pace back tyres. New tyres that actually grip are in the lockup. Electrical issues are depressing me... But I really like this car.

Hear me out, as I could be talking rubbish as well, but it's only what I've experienced. While people claim not registering the IBS doesn't make a difference, I have found it certainly reduces any draw, as has a friend of mine who plays with more of these than I do. I've also found not registering a new battery (if the battery is marginal) causes other issues. On my 325d, it did the following: -Sidelights didn't come on when I opened the car on the keyfob most of the time, despite having it set that way -'Rest' function on the heater when the car is off (i.e you go to the shops and want to keep the car warm) doesn't work. -Radio stays on for barely 10 mins with the key out until the 'low battery' signal cuts it. -It would lose around 20 minutes a week in time. Sometimes, I'd get the '--:--' appearing for the time. Which it did to 'conserve' the battery. I've noticed some are fussier with registrations that others. -VAGs seem to be OK, but 'prefer' it -Fords seem to work with it ; they adopted the tech in 2010(ish), to take over from the simpler 'smartcharge'. Dad's Mondeo which I sometimes fix seems to work well. -Mercs IMO probably need it, although folks claim they don't. My sister's car struggles to start when cold, despite having a new starter and battery earlier on this year, and that definitely has an IBS lead like ours. I lived with the above on a battery with 60% capacity left on the 325d. The above did improve with the registration when I registered it, but it wasn't quite enough, as I suspected ; a new battery and registration has the car match fit again. With my other friend, he found a similar deal on his E9xs as well as his E60 M5, which until he did it, always had low battery warnings whenever it was opened. With a new battery, a year on, it's never refused to start. I do also charge it via the dedicated points under the bonnet with a smartcharger when the bonnet is up. On new cars I work with at work, that is actually standard procedure when: -The car is being worked on for anything, unless it's disconnecting say an alternator or battery etc. -Car is awaiting an inspection for checking everything working (i.e an audit of the car, where wipers, radio, seats etc. are all checked) -The car is awaiting to be shipped ; it will be put on charge when we will then chuck it into the yard, where it will be started for 3 mins when it's loaded onto a transporter. Before the battery instructions and testing, we used to throw away £000s of pounds of batteries. It's almost a shame don't anymore, but that's a story for off here . I'm not saying it will fix your problem, but both IMO are worth eliminating, so as to narrow the search, given my experiences on these cars.

Well things got worse, on my way to a local BMW Indy, stopped at Lidl for a snack... And that's where I stayed for 4 1/2hrs until recovery arrived, car is at home and partially stripped to get at the starter motor, all the manifold and ccv has to come out. Alas I do not have an e14 spanner to get at the fasteners so work continues in the morning. I have ordered a new ccv kit, oil filter/cooler gaskets, coolant flange, oil filter and serpentine belt. Alternator and starter will be going to GB electric for testing and rebuild. We tried to jump start the car with packs and leads, recovery man tried 2 packs. Boy this car is trying my patience like none before.

Not posted a 'positive' for a while. Rebuilt to factory spec starter motor is in, crankcase ccv pipe is in (had to remove the fitting to get old pipe off). Oil filter and cooler gubbins removed, cleaned, new seals and filter fitted, new coolant hose flange fitted. Jump point cable connections brass brushed. Manifold surfaces dressed. (Not pictured, plastic Mani has got new seals) All I have to do now (tomorrow) is fit alternator and belt, manifold and ccv, connect and secure everything I have undone and have a crack at starting her. 😍

Sorry to hear of your car related issues, How did the start go ?? (Beautiful car by the way,) Nigel Thanks, startup delayed, it was a real struggle to get all the ccv stuff under the manifold connected, then eventually I could do it...😁 Started first press of the button... Then cut out and airbag and restraint lights came on. Checked everything and tried again, yay, running and stayed running. Left it running on the drive (gate padlocked), made a drink and checked engine bay. Brilliant, hard plastic water pipe has split, £36 from eBay, luckily it has happened to someone else recently, he used a length of 8mm copper pipe and jubilee clips... £4.20 🤩, fitted and checked... Rubber pipe behind it split, can't bodge that £54... Fitted, had to empty the system, minging fluid came out with an oily sheen, checked, 90% sure it was the oil filter cooler seal, just replaced that so I did not worry, flushed the system, refilled but could not perform the electric water pump bleed, it would not kick in. Tried the V8 manual method, very carefully with my straight 6, it worked. Supposed to do the check and top up yesterday morning, rain stopped play. Nice day today, opened the coolant reservoir cap... Which broke in 2... Managed to get the stuck in piece out and with glue and plastic welding put it back together, topped the tank, undertray back on, car on the ground. Went for a drive, oil and coolant temps ok, drives and pulls well, there is a pulley noise so I'll do tensioner, pulley and belt, also ordered a new expansion tank. This car is going to ruin me...
