I would guess it will cost him more to replace the tank than what you have charged him for the work you have done for him. Seems easy to me,he pays what he owes if not I would Ebay the tank to recoup your costs.
No idea of the legal repercussions of that of course.

Tell him that’s less than an hours rate for a solicitor or 5 minutes for a Dentist Last time I went and had one pulled he said it’d be about £800 to save it. I reckon with one good manoeuvre you might be able to loosen four of the blighters.

I've always taken the high road in situations like this, and never messed up anybodies cars/parts.
But maybe I should have.
The only satisfaction I ever got out of it, is when they come back (sometimes years later), and think they get to do it again. At that point it is "No quotes, and enough money up front so I don't get burned again"
Of course the kind of low life we are talking about is not going to be the trusting kind, and they'll never agree to those terms.
But its fun to see them squirm, trying to talk themselfs out of it...

Seems a Shame to undo such a nice piece of art and potentially leave yourself out of pocket, but giving him the option of him paying up or you poised and ready with thinners and a rag seems the fairest way. Problem is they'll be whispers if the cars on show now because its quite distinctive.

Specific example..
A guy with a chopped late '30s Ford, had screwed me over big time in the past ( with the help of my then employer...)
Revelled in it, went out of his way to rub it in every chance he got.
The Ford looked odd with a heavy chop and the big bulbous nose, it needed to get the hood pie cut to look right.
I'd done a couple, so he knew I could do it and make it look good.
He spent over an hour trying to convince me to take his car on ( more unpayed time, but that time I was happy to spend).
When I told him the terms, he said " but then you can charge me anything"
I told him "Thats right, You'll just have to trust I wont... "
And then, looking at his car "You know... You are right, it really needs that piecut"
I never gave an inch, and when he finally left, he looked truly defeated...

Specific example. I am as loyal to my grudges as I am to my friendships. Yup. You know I harbour malice too. One day……

The car world is a lot smaller than these people think. That is a very specific car, he is swimming in a small pond. And he just hurt his own reputation. How you react, will help to form your reputation. Which is more important than the short term loss of this one job. ( it takes decades to build a good reputation, it takes an afternoon to mess it up). I make my decisions with that in mind... One more thing. When people talk about you and end with "yeah, but he does good work..." , you are doing OK...
