Hi all. Got some projects on the go or sat. Thought I'd do separate threads to make it easier to keep updated. First one is about my Corsa B, Bought after finding sat near the unit I was in. Drawn in by the Aquamarine paint and on the face looked to be a fairly decent shell. Threw on some spare Astra 15's and lowered on some coil overs. This is how the car is staying too, with fresh paint and redone plastics. Despite the car only having 71k on it. It's needed a fair tickle with the welder. I've also changed out the stock 1.2 for something with a tad more power. That's a X18XE1 I pulled out of a Vectra B I had for a winter beater, cracking wee things and easy to fit too. I've got a fair few photos of the project so far. I'll throw them up here in the next while.

Bookmarked!
Those 1.8s are great engines. Not quite as grunty as the later 2.2 but they thrive on revs and move pretty well. Is it on the road yet?

I don't know anything about Vauxhall engine codes but that looks like it'll be a lot more entertaining than it was originally. Love it!

Bookmarked! Those 1.8s are great engines. Not quite as grunty as the later 2.2 but they thrive on revs and move pretty well. Is it on the road yet? It's still a work in progress at the moment. Still some welding to do and then get it resprayed. Was fair impressed with it in the donor car. But you're right it could of done with a little more oomph with it being in a heavier car. Hopefully it'll not be as much of a problem in the lighter Corsa.

The engine is an 1800, but it's based on the "small block" GM engines. Make about 115bhp, so should give it a little bit more shove.

This next chunk of work is all about the R/H side rear arch. Yeaaaahhh. It needed a patch or two. Typical B fashion. Inner arch tub was also rotten. Got it cut all out. Started rebuilding the chassis leg first. Then closed the tub back in. Bit patchwork like, but solid, That's good enough for me. Once it was all seam sealed and stonechipped, it looked ten times better.

Then I tackled the L/H tub. It wasn't as bad. Just. Shouldn't be surprised, as there was three layers of metal making that area. Perfect rot trap. Ah well! So spent a little bit more effort on this side. Looks more original Small patch was done on the outer wheel arch too.

Sorry, forgot to finish catching this project up. While poking about the chassis/floor rails, I found these rather poor plates tacked over them. Oh dear. That's not good either. Could get a new outrigger, but no chassis rail. Had to repair that. Came out alright I thought. L/H rail was rotten too. This time I could get the panels I needed for that side. This was slight easier as I could remove the whole lot and replace them. Next photo is the new outrigger and rail welded on. Both rails were primed with Bonda red oxide, seam sealed and then liberal coating of stone chip on top.

Whooo! More rust repair shots. Lower windscreen scuttle this time. Only found out about this due to the seam blowing out and cracking the perfectly good original windscreen. Got the 'Screen cut out and found this once the outer layer was peeled away. Kept chopping until good steel was found. Repaired with a section cut from a donor. This made the job a LOT easier. Ground down and prep'd for the outer section to go on. Done.

Again, excellent work there, Now bookmarked Nigel Thanks . Glad folk are enjoying the work so far. This should be the metalwork side caught up now. Happily surprised to see the back panel this good. Three patches and it's all good to go. Next post will cover the X18XE1 swap. Just need to find the photos I took a few years ago again.

Quick rundown of the X18XE1 swap. Took the engine, good chunk of loom and any other odds things I might need from the donor. Ran the Vectra for 12k and only the coil pack gave bother. Actually liked it a lot. Just the rot had killed it. This is where it gets fun/interesting. Didn't need PAS or A/C or the heavier pot flywheel. Easily dealt with using parts from other Vauxhalls. A flat flywheel was pinched from a 1.2 16V Corsa C (exact same as early "Smallblock" ones), drivebelt set up you see was converted to loose the extra stuff I didn't need. Thought I was gonna need the drivebelt set up from an SRi 16V Corsa B, as they didn't have power steering too. Then found MK4,MK5 Astra and 1.8 Vectra C's used the same set up, ideal! Easy score at a scrappies. Had to buy an new tensioner, but at tenner posted I wasn't fussed. Then the whole lot drops in re-using the original engine mounts from the 1.2 8v. Top rad hose from a 16v Corsa B, 1.2 lower hose and re-used the 1.2 rad. Only headache I had making it fit was the heater matrix hoses. That wasn't difficult to make some, with some trimming of the hard pipes off the matrix to keep the rubber hoses away from the inlet manifold. Exhaust was dead easy, a new stock MK4 Astra (with an X18XE1) downpipe with cat. This fits the engine and is near bang on length to meet the centre section. A Sleeve clamp finished the job. Relocated the header tank to the pass. side turret and used a Corsa C one. Just to neaten things up. Driveshafts were stock 1.2 ones, gearbox is an F17 C374 from a very late Tigra A. Front brakes are the standard issue 256mm's from any big engined Vauxhall. Another snag was the fuel system. The XE1 runs a deadhead system. The fuel pressure reg lives in the tank on the Vectra. No problem, ebay EFI bypass job, a few AN fittings and some E safe fuel hose. All done! Wasn't a fan of how it was done on the guides. This makes it neater. Mounted it on the old heater tank bracket. Lastly, wiring. Re-used the starter and charging loom off the 1.2. Then got Hamish at Gremlin motorsport to make a patch loom with the immobilizer ring added in. I had a go at doing the loom myself. But couldn't get power to the fuel pump. So gave up. Until I discovered it was the same with the new patch loom. Yeah I forgot to re-connect a fuel pump wire, after ripping out an old alarm system oops! . Think 115bhp in a much lighter shell should make for a fun wee chuggaboom.

Oohh it's been a while. Small update on the Aquamarine dream machine.... Pulled it outside and washed it. Reason was, I had planned to sell the car. Just to free up some room and I was also pure scunnered looking at it. That changed after advertising it on FB marketplace. Oh boy, not fun. Deleted the ad and thought more about finishing the dang thing! So, to get the mojo going again. I fired on some Bilstein coil overs and refitted the 15's. Then went after the last area of major rot on the shell. The passenger sill. Fearing the worst while cutting the outer sill off. I found this. That's not bad at all! Few rounds of rust eating acid treatments, couple of small patches let in and then a good layer of red oxide later. I have this. Had a sill in stock, so chopped the section I needed out and have started welding it in. I didn't want to hack the whole lot out for such a small section. That is how I left it. Hopefully have it finished this weekend. Plan is to try and finish it for next years VBOA show at Sywell. Think that's doable, mechanically is done bar a nut and bolt check. Just the body to straighten out... Easy! Right!?

That was the plan all along. Really wanted to be something that GM could of made. Also wanted it to be budget friendly too and easy to get replacement parts for. These 1800's are LOT cheaper than C20XE's too! 😆

Will you be needing an independent engineers report, for Swansea & insurance purposes?
Should be very 'point n squirt' 👍

It will do. The insurer I normally use aren't fussed about a report, they are happy enough that I've told them about it.
It'll be telling them lot at Swansea that'll be the pain.

Finally finished the sill section. Quite pleased with that. There is other areas to weld, not on the same scale though. Like the typical crack in the B post pre-97 Corsa suffer with and tidy up the new crossmember I welded in a couple of years ago. Scary to think this pile will almost be ready for bodywork!

Yesterday saw the last bit of welding done. These early/Pre-97 cars suffer with cracked B-pillars. So I fixed the cracks and fitted some reinforcement plates from a later car that were fitted to solve this issue. Yes, the weld is blobbed. That was to fill in the missed bits and where I had gone too far with the finger file (idiot!). Now I shall look at straightening the body over christmas. How far I'll go will depend on what the bodyshop says, I rather them tell me what I can do and what products to use.
