The NSU got its debute at a car meet in the region. Normally some 300 cars come and go of all brands (and trucks, mopeds, etc etc) but this year it was pretty hot and so many left early. The NSU did well on the way there and I even had to use a section of highway where I nearly hit 60mph. It felt pretty stable but the engine is hard at work to reach that speed. I still had a few stutters so I guess it does need a bit more carb cleaning. New sparkplugs are probably also a good plan. An approaching the site I had some trouble shifting into 3rd and 4th gear. Oh well, first the event and then we will see. Spotted by at least two people at the event. Seems to be appreciated, also by people I talked to. Its funny that just as with the Panhard that people cant distinguish a 2-cylinder from a 2-stroke.. It is indeed quite a different sounds but a 2-stroke is even more different. As said I left a bit early because of the heat and also because I had some doubts on the gearshifts. Leaving the event was fine but first time shifting into 3rd was nearly impossible. On the roundabout, I heard some metal rattling.. Not good. I stopped (in the shade of a tree luckily) with only 1st gear remaining. I could not reach the other gears anymore. First thought was.. front motor mount rubber has failed because then this happens according to NSU clubs. I had checked the rear mounts which were new but the front one is very hard to see. Not having proper tools or a jack I called the roadside assistance. They showed up and looking deep under the car noticed the motor mount is actually pretty new but simply a rubber bushing had fallen out of the gear linkage. It probably was falling apart slowly causing the difficult shifting and when it fell out completely it was just the metal parts hitting each other (the rattling noise) but not enough movement to engage most of the gears. From some coolant and fuel hoses he create a temporary rubber bushing and all of a sudden I had very sharp shifting. Good enough to get back home. Sometimes its the little things. Forgot to take pictures. So the NSU is back home and I can now target a bit more what jobs to do on it. Parts will then have to be ordered from Germany. It will have to wait a little bit as there are some jobs on other cars that are a bit more under time pressure (MOT) and there is a holiday coming up as well.

You're doing a fine job of recommissioning this little vehicle. A nice piece of history to enjoy!

Its been a little while here. The NSU did not get much daylight in recent months. But after a visit to my trusted workshop its now all fit to drive again. Now I just need the winter to end. On the way to the workshop I suddenly lost power. Well, there is a reason it needs a workshop visit after all. I was so convinced that it linked to dirty carb. issues that keep haunting me that I didn't even check further. It was less than 5 minutes from the workshop so they picked it up. And then obviously and perfect in sight was a disconnected ignition wire.. How did I not even think about that. Runnin on just one of two cylinders is certainly a real power loss. So the about 10hp it could deliver (lot of losses for the not contributing cylinder) was enough to drive 50km/h or about 30mph. But not more. After making a inventory some parts were ordered from Germany and the NSU was left to wait in a corner. Meanwhile the workshop hosted a car event and it seems the NSU drew some attention. First focus point: brakes They worked well, probably also helped as this one has the optional disk brakes at the front from the NSU 1000; other than the standard drum brakes. Still they dragged a little and there was no history on the last time the brake fluid was changed. It could have been 10+ years. The fluid looked more like old engine oil so it was well overdue. The Solex really needed a clean. Despite my efforts a deeper level clean was needed and the pictures show the level of dirt. Thats what happens if you don't or rarely drive. After a ultrasonic bath and a rebuild kit it was all nice again. And a check under the valve cover and adjustment of clearances was also in order. On the right you can see the very weird excentric camshaft drive. With a lot of new ignition parts, fresh oil (which is combined engine & gearbox), new brushes for the DynaStart and some fixes to the gear linkeage its all ready again. All adjustments done as well so it runs again as its supposed to. With only 30hp you cant afford to loose a few.

My very first car was an NSU Prinz that I drove round the orchard before I was old enough to drive on the road. It was scrapped after I got my first road car (57 Morris Minor). Felt guilty about taking it to the breakers yard. Interesting & quirky little cars and pretty rare now in the UK

Yes, you really only see them in Italy where they sold a huge amount and they did not all die from rust.

It’s a few years ago now but I came close to buying one when a large collection of old cars came up for auction ( I think the thread on here was titled massive tat auction, which sadly was the state of a lot the cars 😢). Was interested in a few things but there was a Prinz there, looked fairly sound but the engine was in bits on the back seat. Was going to bid on it as as it piqued mine and my dad’s interest but sadly bidding started at my maximum,, I had to pass on it. Yours looks like a peach 🙂

Mechanic's rule #1... If the car works, anything left on the floor after you finished wasn't needed in the first place

Little NSU is a bit of a pain. Took it out (finally its nice weather most days now and no more salt on the roads) for a classic car tour but without much luck. The throttle cable turns out to still need some adjustment as I can't reach full throttle and have some slack at the idle point. Reversing is a bit of a challenge is the brakeshoes are binding in that direction. Means it needs some power and its very shaky. And then when the classic car tour was about to start I had issues with keeping the engine running; no idle and no constant rpm at all. After a tow home and a bit of rest its running fine again. I suspect dirt in the fuel tank got dislodged when trying to reverse and then clogged the fuel filter. Probably the one inside the tank. More work will be needed to get it reliable. Number of trips with troubles vs. trips without troubles is a bad ratio at the moment.

As can be seen Ian (HubNut) stopped by for a visit again. NSU at HubNutHe had some fun with the NSU which had a good day and it did not brake down or have other quirks. I have decided however that after a few more repairs the NSU will go up for sale. I don't bond with it enough to forgive it when its broken down and aside from short <30min drives around the house I don't feel comfortable enough in it to take it out further - meaning it will not get enough time outside of the garage. Life and learn right? I love these cars to look at (I had even thought about a DKW or AutoUnion which is a step further even) and see others with them but owning is different. I don't have that with the other old cars, helped by the fact they are driving a bit more modern.
