braaap do you have any experience of the Axton or Emphaser DSP amps? Like this... Sorry, I don't. Both are brands of swiss hifi dealer chain ACR. Axton more on the lower price scale, emphaser a bit pricier with some good test results. In 2000 I had an emphaser active subwoofer box in my trunk and it was okay. But I haven't really kept following the carhifi market and stuck to my oldschool hifi gear. I'm really not a fan of these underseat shoebox subs, they may help if You really don't have space for a good bass like in pickup cabins. But in a golf I would rather go for a good 3way speaker system plus amp.

What benefits are there from having an amp? A built-in amp of any head unit, even expensive ones do not deliver more than 17watts per channel. Anything else like 4x25w or more is just marketing nonsense. An extra amp can deliver a lot more, although there is plenty of marketing nonsense, too. I'd rather believe in magazine test results than manufacturer data. A weak radio amp can damage a speaker if You turn it too loud. External amps provide more output, so You have enough power, even if You do not always use it. It's like having a powerful car. You don't always drive full throttle, but in certain situations like overtaking it's good to have some extra power.

Before I upgraded the speakers, I'd change the headunit to something reputable.
IME, most aftermarket speakers required dedicated amplification, due to the lower sensitivity of the speakers. But a decent headunit with some tweaking will yield a surprising result.
As said, high passing the front speakers, and adding a sub (even a seat mounted one) will improve the sound more than you think.
These days, I'd go for a CarPlay headunit from someone decent. Things like Time Alignment will imrpove the soundstage of the car and affect the sound as well, more than you think.

The hu has carplay and the android equivalent so that's the current source of music. I'd like a cd player as I've kept all my old cds. The music getting played in the car is my dance music and my daughter's chart music. [...] An under seat sub makes sense as I can't afford to lose any boot space. Forgot to reply on this onfo. It is no rocket science to digitize Your cd collection so it probably fits completely on a micro sd card to be stuck into Your phone. Then have it connected to a bluetooth head unit. For that kind of music You don't necessary need a subwoofer. A good compo system with some 16cm kick bass woofers should be fine. Rainbow or Phonocar spring to my mind with such speaker sets. If You still desire some deeper tunes a spare wheel well subwoofer is good for You. You can buy active ones that even allow You to keep the spare wheel.

Forgot about spare wheel subs, but then, do R32s have a spare wheel well? IIRC the boot floor is shallow for the 4motion stuff and/or exhaust, not sure there's a well...
