So after losing my metro back in October last year I needed another retro, but at the time didn't want anything too fast. I spent an age looking for something and in Jan 23 hopped on the train to buy this: Sorry not many pics of the car (the ST behind it isn't mine, but they make a good looking couple). It's just a 1.1 4 speed and to be honest I didn't really bond with it that quickly, almost put it up for sale but it won me over. It's on coilover at the front with lowering springs at the back. The fronts been poly bushed (not sure about the rear) Capri laser wheels with nangkang tyres finish off the spec list. It's got a really, really mint interior, genuinely show quality. The plans: So to start with I grabbed a pair of CVH engines, they were advertised only as 2 x 1.6 CVH engines. No info at all but for £150 I thought "why not" so I drove to Newbury from Brighton and popped them both in the back of the slagwagon. Turns out they are an xr2 and an xr3i so bonus!

Once I had the engines in the workshop I could have a better look at them. The xr2 engine has obviously sat outside for a while, even has a snail on it. As soon as it was inside I pulleg the plugs out and poured some light oil into the cylinders. Let it sit for a week like that but still siezed solid. So decided to pop the head off and take a look. That's the after pic, there was about 5mm of muck in there, so I think we know why it's siezed... Once the head was off I popped the cam out and had a win. That's a Kent cams sport r cam that is! Worth more than I paid for the pair of engines!

On the plus side the xr3i engine is in much better shape, it turns over and looks a lot nicer so I'm looking forward to stripping it down.

So plan for the car as a whole is: Get it on a rotisery and get rid of the rust. Band the steel wheels that came with it, want to go as wide as I can. Add wide arches, sill extensions and maybe some aero bits underneath if it's on a rotisery why not, but we'll see. Strip out the interior. Put in a fancy looking roll cage, gonna aim quite high with this. Maybe an 8 point, defiantly 6 point with lots of bracing. Give it a ghetto paint job, gonna be roller and brush painted. But then, hand brush sign painted detail over the top. These images are the insperation for the build: The stolen engineering fiesta is awesome and I've been staring at it for ages. Been obsessed with burg cup cars for ages so that's the aim, to have something that looks like that.

Little update: The Kent cam is a bust... This is a good lobe side on: This is cylinder 2 inlet cam side on.... Think there's only about 2mm lift left on that! When I agreed to buy the engines I didn't know the cam was in there, but then got told. Plan was to just have a standard 1.6 engine..... But now I really want the cam, so I might have to buy one. Funny how once an idea is in your head, it's hard to shift.

i'd be looking at newer engines, 500 to 900 should get you a decent 2,0 16v

Made a bit more progress on stripping the xr2 engine. Got the sump off, and took a peek at the crank bearings... This engine had a hard life! They're all scored. Also been assembled with plenty of bathroom silicone... Lovely!

Made a little more progress yesterday, got the tyres off the wheels, ready for banding thanks to one of our work niebghours. Then made a tool to pull the alternator belt pully off the crank on the xr2 lump. More damage here the keyway had been butchered. This engine really hasn't had a good life.
Ofcourse I didn't plan ahead and there's the cam belt pully being that so I'll be making up another pair of dogs to pull that off and welding them on the other side of the tool.

the cvh head kinda fits on a zetec block, so you could run 2.0 capacity with 8v and carbs, might be cheaper and a ZVH on carbs would be great in that www.quantums.info/zvh.htm

Also slight change of plans... gonna try and recondition the mechanical injection system from the xr3i. This is all a see if I can do it, if you can why not kinda project. Just for the fun of it. As I mentioned at the beginning the inspiration is burg cup cars and most of them run mechanical injection so why the hell not ehh?

Made a bit more progress last night got the xr2 engine all stripped down with the exception of the piston in cylinder no1 that is STUCK. Even pounded on it with a soft mallet didn't budge a mm. Here's the now completed specialist cvh pully puller: And here's the resulting pile of parts: Next up will be stripping the XR3i engine so fingers crossed it'll be better.

Been making a bit of progress with stripping these engines down, got the XR3i engine stripped down to the point where the cam cover is off. This one looks like it's in better nick thankfully: But I'm keeping my fingers crossed... Knocked up a little makeshift stand for the engine to sit on while I strip it, which has made things a lot easier than the last one: Starting to really love the idea of the mechanical fuel injection, the more I look into it the more I think it's a really elegant system. These are the injectors: No shut off, they just squirt all the time!

Got the head off last night! Yay! The bores look in really good nick, can still see the honing marks, so I'm a happy bunny. Think it's safe to say that the fueling wasn't quite right last time it was running though... More coke than a rappers man bag!
