Brake levers. Using these has cost £1.89 for some suitable ferrules, first actual spend ! Front brake- don’t need much in way of brakes and these should be fine with the old school levers Little bits of leftover chain to extend the top to bottom chain. If this works it will make me happy! Need a chain tensioner so more rootling has found an old derailleur and more spending for an M10 x 1 nut so we can mount it James

It's coming together now. Having fallen off a horse, I'm still willing to bet at least a collar bone, if not a wrist, will be in need of attention before this is consigned to the scrap bin. Love it, keep it up.

So after work trips and holidays we have some actual progress! Bits of top bike have become a front chain tensioner mount. Cable ferrule holder added for gears. The cable goes from top bike down to seat stay of bottom bike nicely. Got chopping on the horrible front chainring. Original plan was small top bike to big bottom bike chainring and then use middle chainring to wheel. This only gave 3/6 gears on the back before chains clashes so now is big top to big bottom and small front to back wheel. Hopefully not too low geared. Easy to swap things about with the current set up looking like it will work well. James

Some more detailed shots- welding hasn’t been cleaned up yet and the boy was happy so I’m happy Front derailleur mount M10x1 nut hot stuck to m10x1.5 bolt to give spacing and tension adjustment. Hopefully the two pairs of bolts on the repurposed wheel mount will stay put. Old split cage suntour derailleur couldn’t be better as can just take the front chain on and off. Brakes in progress Made a headache for ourselves as I want the old school Sturmey Archer brake levers as these don’t have threaded adjustment ferrules. Had already fitted a bit of tube for the seat post mount brake bracket so no adjustment. ⚽️ 🏀 🏈 s. Screw thread adjuster added to this using a front mudguard mount from a bit of front fork. The bit of tube gave clearance for the adjuster so not completely wasted time ! James (&boy)

Thanks grizz mechanically I think we’re are pretty much there. Need to spend an evening fitting cables and tubes etc and ready to try. The thought is to try and only spray the bits of bare metal (gold is the preferred option already in the shed) so that you can see by the colour where stuff came from. Got to get it running before the village fête on July 2nd so Fingers out time. James

So it’s up and running! So some grinding down and a dreadful impatient gold spray job on the welded / bare metal bits meant the frame was done. Spent an unhappy hour or two making the best of a bunch of crappy bottom brackets getting the bottom bike to have something in the way of bearings. Does it work? Yes more athletic boy took his brave pills and had a go. Once moving it’s not too bad but gears don’t index too well and it’s keen to wheelie ! James and boy

Some more shots as realised the others weren’t too clear And an action shot of the boy. So what’s left ? Well the front brake needs readjusting, the index thumb lever is a 7 not a 6 so I think it will get swapped for a friction only one and we need to fit the horn and reflectors to be road legal…. Total outlay about £8 and scavenged parts. Very happy with result. James and boy.

Brilliant & pretty crazy at the same time. Please don’t ever highside it. 😀🤦🏼♂️ Re the front brake, I rekon that’s one bike you want the worst front brake ever! Going over the bars looks like a bad day

Going over the bars looks like a bad day Thanks for the kind words and concern for our safety ! The weight distribution is a long way back even with the saddle mount reversed it is still only just in front of the rear wheels axle. Brakes work pretty well but as you are in the small front chainring only its geared to be pretty slow so risks of going over front are reduced. I need to loose some weight before even contemplating it but boy reports back that its pretty ok to ride but not up steep hills as it will tip backwards easily. James & Boy.
