I recently fitted a 1275cc MG Midget rib-case gearbox to match the engine in my Minor Traveller. It was purchased fairly cheaply, and I took a quick peek inside and all looked fairly good. However, there is a fair bit of whine and gearlever 'chatter' in 3rd gear - the other gears and synchromesh, etc. are all fine.
Does anyone have any recommendations for reducing this NVH? I was thinking along the lines of Lucas Transmission Fix or Redline 75W90, perhaps, unless there are better suggestions...

I've used redline a few times, not specifically to make a gearbox quieter, as part of routine maintenance.
It always made the gear change significantly smoother even though that's not answering your question.

75w90 is a fairly close match to the 20w50 engine oil viscosity which the books say use and it is obviously engineered for a gearbox!
I recently pulled 2 old minor boxes appart the one running on gear oil was much cleaner and showed far less wear than the one on engine oil.
Fundamently though they are not usually like that so really it needs pulling appart and investigating, re-building one is pretty straight forward and the parts are available / cheap.

Indeed. I was hoping for a 'cop out' solution to avoid having to remove it all again and rebuild, etc.
I do have a spare standard Minor 'box rebuilt (by myself, about 5 years ago) to hand if the worst comes to the worst, though...

Disgusting Try MAZOLA vegetable oil, once oxidised it turns to a "jelly" like substance that could quieten, THUNDER.

Thanks. Similar to Universal Tractor Transmission Oil (UTTO), by the sounds of it?

The gearbox in my brother's first car was so noisy we joked about possums living in it. Was too loud to be the standard old Holden gearbox rats.
