I must have 3-4 other build treads for cars I still haven’t finished, so might as well get something else to take up more time with, Transit mk2 LWB, which is kitted out as a mobile BBC tv licence detector van, only done 26k and is pretty well original with mostly good bodywork. 2.0 pinto, Plan is to take out what’s no use in the back, and fit a bed of some sort, table, sink and hob, along with two extra seats for the kids booster seats, these will Likely be seats out of a minibus or something with seat belts all built into them, so it’s just a case of bolting it in. Polish the body work, paint the grill and bumpers, tidy up the wheels. Service the engine, do the wiring, won’t be anything too fancy. Then hopefully use it regualary in the summer months. Just need to get it back from the auction place, as the MOT has expired, might book an MOT somehwere and drive home then cancel the MOT, or borrow a trailer, just looks a bit big for a trailer. Few pics from the auction and a couple I took.

This is really cool. Looks an ideal base for a camper. How's the rust on it, 26k is not a lot of miles 😀. Also becauwe it is so promenent, whats the box on the roof for?

This is really cool. Looks an ideal base for a camper. How's the rust on it, 26k is not a lot of miles 😀. Also becauwe it is so promenent, whats the box on the roof for? I believe they use to put the Ariel out of the from the inside to catch people with no tv licence. No real rust. Steps etc all original. One door is gone at the bottom one where arch needs a repair but overall it all good. Just need to make sure I treat it all and get some good rust protection inside doors and everywhere I can

Many years ago I had a Lwb mk2 minibus as a daily, shudder to think what the mpg must have been, or how on earth I could afford to run it.
I remember converting from the pinto to the mk3 2.5DI and mirror tinting the windows.

I’ll have to stick with the pinto for now. Guessing it just doesn’t have the guts to really pull the weight around. I’ve pick the van up now. Would anyone know where I will find the colour code for it?

I don't remember mine being particularly slow with the pinto but it definitely perked up with the Di. I only converted it as i already had a rotten mk3.
Not sure where the paint code would be. Mine was a very similar colour but I painted that and it was a vauxhal colour.
I've never been a fan of wood burners in campers but that hole in the roof almost makes it a no brainer.

If I remember right, the pinto’s in Transits used a low compression head. Skimming the head might give it a bit more get up and go.

Should be on the chassis plate in the footwell, chances are it's a 2 letter code that will be from Fords commercial paint codes, mine is NG which is Cargo blue, but if you look it up on the car charts it's Nordic Green...

I stuck it in for an MOT today to see what I’m dealing with, passed with no advisories. So not bad then. Will stick on a cambelt and fiddle with the timing, then I’ll tax it and run it around a bit to check everything is generally ok before pulling it apart over winter.

I never actually taxed the van and used it. But I do need to start getting it sorted out. I built it a carport in the summer. So plans now are full engine service. And replace the carb with a new one. New tyres Paint what I can and waxoyl it. I’ve stripped out the interior now so I can look at making a start soon. Need to and swivel seats to the front, and some seats on the back for the kids. Basic sink with a 12v pump, cooking will be a standard camping stove. Find an awning that can go on the side. Needs to be ready by around May time.

Got the bulkhead out and the had to angle grind the blue box that is sticking out the roof on the passenger side out, Made a bit of extra space without the bulkhead, Need to find some rear seats for the kids next, get them In place then I can get the rear seat/bed built, The over head storage that’s already in will stay be good for plates and cups etc. Will just paint the lining that’s in the van already, and get an off cut of carpet, I’m hoping I can get the conversion done for around £1000-£1200

Today. I woke up at my sisters in BirminghamAs I had been out drinking with my friends, Looked out the window. Dusting of snow and my fairly well worn out daily driver waiting for me. Jumped in and headed for somewhere near Heathrow airport. £150 later I had some Renault Espace seats. 2 folding ones with isofix and built in seatbelts with the floor rails for the back of the van, and I got the two front seats too. Just need to find some good quality swivel plates so I can make them spin around.

I managed to de grease the engine bay with some white spirit in a spray bottle and a jet wash. Came up quite good. Sadly I don’t know if I will be able to continue with this project. But we will see in the next few weeks

Shame you might not be able to see it through but I'd rather sell a project than condemn it to a "back burner" project that just declines.
They seem to fetch good money so at least it won't end up in a scrap yard.

Well I had the van for sale for 6 weeks. Had a few people view, loads of part exchange offers from people trying to get me to take on their projects that they can’t sell. If the van didn’t have windows and was the twin wheel rear axle. It would have sold without issue. But it’s their loss, I’ve bought all the bits to service it and make a basic camper out of it. So I will get it all ship shape and take it camping this summer. Today started by, sanding the rear bumpers and put some rust killer stuff on them and testing out if black surrounds on the broken rear light will look good, Tomorrow will paint the new rear lights, paint the bumpers, replace the number plate and give the back of the van a polish up. That will be a good start, then paint the front bumper and grill, change the front plate, paint wiper arms and around the windscreen, paint the wheels and polish the whole van. Will soon be looking better, then service the engine and paint a couple of bits under the bonnet, full underbody scrape and re underseal. Then sort out the interior. For the kids seats rig up some lights and a socket. And just chuck some air beds in the back for this year. Then a weekend in Tenby.

I'm surprised the windows have put people off, especially as they're a professional period conversion and not just hacked in like a lot of them.
Good to see it moving forward, you'll love it once it's in use.

Rear bumper and lights painted, exhaust tip painted and number plate swapped for pressed steel. Front end sanded and rust treated and then stone chipped the valance. Front bumper and grill to paint then will do the wheels and start on the engine bay.
