Hello folks. A question for someone with experience of building differentials please:
I'm rebuilding my MG Midget diff and changing the ratio. New bearings. Reusing the Quaife LSD. I'm clear on how to set pinion position and CROWNwheel position and on checking the contact areas are correct, and also how to adjust that. My question is, should the differential have end float or should there be preload on the bearings to prevent this? If so, how much preload? How many thousands of an inch? The workshop manual barely mentions this but it does mention 0.002" of bearing "pinch". Is this correct and the figure I'm looking for? i.e.; do I add as many shims as I can behind the bearings to use up all the space in the carrier and apply a further 0.002" of preload to the bearings? Thanks in advance.
