Landrover Box to RWD??slater

There's a few threads to this effect out there but none seem to have a conclusive answer.
Basically if I have a Landrover LT77 or R380 box can I take the transfer case off and bolt up the RWD tail shaft casing off a SD1 or LDV??
Will the tail shaft be the right length etc?
If so can I do it with an R380 or will it only work with a LT77?

I did ask the very same question to Ashcroft Transmissions who said NO. However I cant see why not if you can find a coupling for the output shaft to prop shaft. Maybe the tail shaft could be fabricated to suite? There does seem to be an abundance of 4 wheel drive boxes readily available for modifying .

The output shaft from the gearbox is splined and looks like this. You would need an adaptor or to have a shaft made. I'm not sure if the gear ratios would work either. The LT230 transfer case drops the output speed and increases torque.

Does that part not just fit where the output flange would normally go?
It looks like I will have to buy a load of bits and see for myself!

I'm not sure if the gear ratios would work either. The LT230 transfer case drops the output speed and increases torque. that's what the different axle ratios do in a 2wd application that uses the same box.

The mainshaft of the LT77/R380 boxes is entirely different for the 2wd and 4wd variants. Not just a case of unbolting the tailhousing and swapping them over.

thanks, thats the kind of clarity I need!
Do you know if theres any chance of swapping the 1st motion shaft (and bell housing) of the LDV box over with the defender equivalents? Seems they both use a 21 tooth gear but not sure of the exact ration on the LDV box without stripping down the one i have and counting teeth.
Surely there must be a simple way of getting a 200tdi/300tdi in a RWD only configuration?
At this rate I'm just going to have to drop a Merc engine in it!

Check the suffix letters at the end of the serial numbers. If they match you should be able to mix and match without any issues. They constantly developed the gearboxes throughout production so different suffixes are unlikey to match up. Changes include bearing sizes, gear widths, reverse mechanisms, synchros etc. If you can find the relevant parts catalogues that may give you an insight into which parts carried over and which changed

Lock the centre diff and take off front prop = rear drive only.

I have a 200tdi in my 48 Austin using a freight rover 300 gearbox, to use a land rover box you will need the end casing and the output shaft from one so it was easier to use the whole box. Also most land rover lt77 boxes available are from discos which have a much longer bellhousing and input shaft which can put the box to far back.

Lock the centre diff and take off front prop = rear drive only. The transfer case and gearbox combined is hooooge. Likely that isn’t an option.

But also bear in mind the transfer boxes don’t like being locked out and used as RWD for long as it puts a lot of stress on the locking mechanism (from what I’ve been told from LR techs) and can cause failure. May be bogus info though.

If it's staying in a Landy then it easy. Syncro Gearboxes make a selectable 2wd/4wd conversion that fits in the transfer box LINK HERE. Does require a strip down of the transfer box but they are quite straight forward. Plenty of Youtube guides.

Its going in an LDV not a Landrover. I did briefly consider a 4x4 conversion but the project is already complicated enough!
Luckily ive found someone with the correct LDV box now so hopefully the question is a bit moot. We will see how a 200tdi gets on pulling 5+tons up a hill

that's only a 110 station wagon with a 2.75t trailer behind it, it'll do it, just slowly !

That's what low range is for.

No low range without the transfer box.
