What the collective opinion of these? Due to various brake upgrades I'm going to need some fairly oddball brake hoses. Nothing too out there, but none I can find available. Has anybody tried them? Are they safe/easy to make? Are they legal for road use? Cheers

You can make them yourself and they're perfectly road legal as long as they don't balloon and are well clipped in.

Have you looked at HEL Performance at all? They have a pretty comprehensive custom hose builder on their site.
Depends how oddball you need to go I guess!

I would recommend the HEL ones as well. I like them with banjo ends. Usually measured length with a piece of thin hose.

Another vote here for HEL! Excellent customer service, well priced, and they have a load of fittings listed in stainless steel on their site too

I keep the bits to make them myself to save time, hassle and money. Plus, you can make a new hose to replace the one you damaged on Sunday afternoon on the car you need to drive to work tomorrow. Making a braided steel hose is usually cheaper than buying a standard rubber one and can be easier to use, like connecting a Mini clutch master cylinder directly to the slave using an angled banjo at the top.
If you can manage to cut the ends square, then they're no harder to make than a brake pipe.

I'm Not 100% but I was told by a person who worked for a brake company, that DIY lines would not pass IVA, they need to be crimped, not sure if that true because he was trying to drum up business?, I have made a few over the years, and had one failure, fortunately a clutch line, it may have been operator error installing, I think I may have twisted the line in such a way that the short line was loaded in a way it loosened the nut, BUT, I have never had a problem since, especially as now I use loctite270 HiStrength on the the thread when fitting the compression nut,

I have HEL brake, clutch and fuel lines on two cars and, like others, I can recommend them.

AFAIK, no compression fit lines are TUV approved either. I know my power steering friend is not a fan of compression fittings either, much preferring swaged fittings.

I believe you are on the right lines (HA!) that they do not meet construction and use regs, and should be swaged, however the MOT test has no mention of them...
I have made lines without issue using fittings from Torques.co.uk, there are plenty of videos on making AN type teflon lined lines.

I think I have it figured out how I can use standard lines so no need to risk making my own.
Thanks for the input

MOT testing manual does state compression fittings aren't suitable, and are a fail. The fact the many pass without any advise is a different matter...

The manual only states that for rigid lines, if they're all flexible then the tester can't fail them.

Thats odd as the 205 gti has a compression fitting on the fuel feed line from the factory!

Thats odd as the 205 gti has a compression fitting on the fuel feed line from the factory! Fuel pressure is about 50psi. Brake line pressure starts at about 800 and can reach 2000. That's a noticeable difference, although you could argue that the brake fittings work by compressing two matching tapers together....

I couldn't find fittings and hose at a price that made making my own cheaper than buying pre-made ones.
I forget who I used for ones for my trials car - company owned by an ex-BTCC driver I think?
Basically rang up and asked for ones with ends that matched my Caterham fronts, but were a lot longer, specifying the length, and then ones that would fit the MX5 calipers at one end, with the other end the same as the fronts, again specifying the lengths I wanted.
Turned up a few days later exactly as requested.

www.thinkauto.com/Used them on various projects very good on price and have a massive varity of parts on site. And form memory ( few years back) the owner was still racing in historic BTCC or what ever it is nowadays
