I got out my old soldering iron the other day and it's (for want of a better phrase) utterly screwed. It got hot in all the wrong places so is probably a fire risk. It's a piece of cheap garbage really so it's no surprise that it's died.
I don't want to spend too much money as I won't use it much, but it is a necessary part of the toolkit.
Something that won't break would be nice. What would you recommend?

I got a cheap soldering station from Screwfix to do LEDs with as my gas iron kills them, gets too hot and it’s been great. Make sure you tin the tip before each solder and keep the tip clean between use and it should perform well.

My old one packed up a few weeks ago so went out and purchased this. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B5GM885M?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_detailsSo far I have used it to help with the construction of the loom within Woody, works well, came with a number of tips - nice. The only thing is that it is a 'work station' rather than a standalone iron but other than that, recommended. P.

Firstly, what do you need the iron for? If you are doing wiring probably a Weller dual heat pistol type, the nicety of these is they get up to temp in about 15secs from pulling the trigger, However, they are not so good for bigger jobs, like battery leads. My Weller dual heat gun I have had for ever, My dad bought it for me when I was building slot cars when I was 13, I'm 66 now and its never let me down, I do also own a Rawlplug 1" tipped blunderbus of an Iron that will repair brass radiators without thinking about it..... Sorry PaulY, Now to be contentious, when an apprentice I was told never to solder electrical wires that flex or vibrate!!, this was again said by a professional racecar electrician who worked for Prodrive, and laterly for Renault F1, the reasoning being the solder will create a hard spike up the centre of the wire and form a fracture point, go back to slot cars, how many time did I reattach wires to motors because they had broken at the solder joint, If I rarely solder wires now, they will get a double sleeving of shrink tubing to support the joint.

Brilliant - thanks all (it's only wiring I will do from time to time). I shall raid the piggy bank and see if I can get a Weller.
