Another one DezBought in 2013. I left the show before 2pm on Sunday as I had to detour to pick up a pillar drill I had bought a couple of weeks ago in Buckingham. Who said this truck should not work ? Assembled, cleaned and serviced. Good value at £80.00

Dez, I had one exactly the same, except a bench standing one, I had a bleed on the brain 12 years ago, divorce about the same time, ended up selling everything, longbed colchester student, Fobco drill, big startrite band saw, Bridgeport mill, and a lot more, Just wish I hadn't , Drill press I have now is a Startrite Saphire ,

The sapphires are decent drills too, guy in the unit next door used to my old pace used have one. I could Probably manage without a lathe, and have never kept a mill for long, but a decent drill press is a must have. I must have done thousands of speed holes with this thing, let alone actual mounting holes! Tbh it spends as much time with a hole cutter in it as an actual drill bit so it’s never had an easy life.

grizz that looks a serious one, deffo a size up from mine. What brand was that? Thanks. Can’t remember. Will look tomorrow or some time. I have mostly old tools for my heavy work. When i left South Africa 20 years ago, I sold a whole woodwork shop for less than the price of one drill press. Included a large bench saw, 12” thicknesser planer, wood lathe, 3 twenty litre buckets of wood chisels, bench grinders etc. My wood lathe here is a Coronet Major, the complete one with saw, planer etc. though I rarely use it now. A lot to be said for older tools.

I have sort of restarted my workshop, I have a garage/workshop at my house with a Saphire in there and a colchester Bantam both 3 phase on an inverter, and another sapphire at my current house with my new wife <3 where I live now,

grizz that looks a serious one, deffo a size up from mine. What brand was that? No markings on the body, it was obviously a factory machine. So had been painted at least once. The motor shows this…… Could it be original? No clue. But it is an awesome machine to have and work with.

Wow, so much machinery knowledge gathered here! May I just shove in a machine question? What kind of machine can be used privately (regarding costs and size/space) to work on car wheels? A standard lathe doesn't take them because of the limited space from hub (?) to lathe bed (?). Though I have seen a video of some guys somewhere in asia, using one for repairing severely damaged alloy rims. I know there are machines to overhaul big brake drums of lorrys or cargo trailers. A car wheel should fit in there easily, but do they offer the same turning speeds like a lathe? Can a drill press be altered for such a job?edit: after reading v8ian s answer in the next post, I withdraw my question about the drill press. But I have seen something similar here, maybe in one of yoeddynz threads, but that was possibly a milling machine, not a mis-used drill press.

Can you turn on a drill, not really, Drills are designed to have linear loads, not radial loads, start loading a drill sideways there is a likelihood the bearings will wear or even bend the quill. Where as Lathes are designed with to be more robust with bearings and headstock not to move with either linear or radial loads There is AFAK no restriction on domestic machine size, one of your restrictions will be that going for a bigger machine the power supply will be 3 phase rather than 240v, inverters will run 3 phase but there is normally a big loss in power/torque. As for lathes with depth to turns wheels, there are such things as "GAP BED" lathes, where a section to the bed in front of the chuck is removable, this allows you to get a bigger job in the chuck, you would at least be looking for something like a Colchester Student to get this facility. and might need to go even bigger to a Major or Mastiff, The trouble with looking for a Gap bed, is the people who know what they are, are possibly professionals, and charge professional prices+VAT of course And, Never ever forget, any machine tool has, by nature the ability to Maim or KILL, Edit, There is a saying that you can put a small job in a big lathe, but you cant put a big job in a small lathe, OK that very true, in most cases big lathes wont turn the surface speed to get a finish on a small job

They do make dedicated lathes for working on wheels. Big money tho. In reality you're not going to do it at home without a bespoke machine.
(The gap isn't deep (long) enough to get wheels in usually btw)

braaap the answer is definitely not to jack your car up and chock the suspension solid to use that as a lathe for wheels!

The Bosch PDB40 is a reasonable drill press, good speed control and portable Bit the bullet (geddit? bit? drill bit?) I've ordered a Bosch from Amazon warehouse for £210-ish, see how that goes. I will bear in mind what was said about the geared drills earlier in the thread

Nice and quiet, will wait to see what my garage buddy thinks when I see him, but from drilling a couple of holes in some aluminium strips and a piece of scrap wood, all seems well!
