Hi gang I have a very stock 351W in my Fairlane. It produces very little top-end power (190hp @ 3000rpm) but buckets of torque (350lbft). I've been planning a cam swap to let it rev out past 3000rpm and redress the balance of torque to power a little. I had in my mind a Comp cams High Energy 268H, suggested by blackpopracing and metalshapes (IIRC) However, I've had the option of an Xtreme Energy XE268H but can't quite work out if it's too much. It's recommended for comp ratio over 9:1 and a higher stall torque converter, where the 268H can work with lower CRs and stock TC. Can anyone shed any light or wisdom? cheers

Pay attention to the tc stall rating more than anything on a slushomatic. Get that wrong and they’re horrible to drive as you have no option of slipping the clutch to get around it.

What Dez said... There is nothing wrong with going a bit wilder, if you plan to change all the critical things along with it. Assuming you are planning to use a good intake and carb, better ignition and probably valvesprings either way. In other words, bolt on stuff. With things like cams and carbs its easy to fall into the Bigger is Better trap... The Extreme Energy cam might still be fine, but at some point a bigger cam will need higher compression ratio, porting or better heads ( the stock heads on most of the Windsor family of engines are pretty asthmatic ), headers, pistons, rods ( or at the very least better rod bolts ), etc. The 268H wont make it a fire breather, but its about as big as you can put in a bone stock engine to wake it up a bit and make it a lot nicer.

I think that answers it, cheers both.
They're similar enough to have me tempted, but I think the extreme energy version is a step too far for the rest of the engine & drivetrain, especially given I don't actually want that much from it.

First thing I'd do is find a local rolling road and get a baseline power run done and make sure it's making roughly what power it should be. The best and worst thing about yank V8's is they run alright even when they're knackered.

Engine is from a 1992 Econoline, fitted with a period offy inlet, holley 600 vac secondary carb, cheap eBay dizzy and a dual exhaust using the cast manifolds.

To me it seemed a really healthy motor which pulled hard, and exactly what I’d expect from a van motor with torque grind cam. Which the figures back up.

That's looks good to me. Definitely go for the milder option cam, it'll perk it up a bit.
